In all honesty I rarely flip with less then a 3/8oz weight and most of the time it's 1/2oz on my basic Texas rig. The only time I do is during the winter or if I'm fishing really shallow water like a foot or less then I might back it down to a 1/4 or 3/16oz. I completely agree with the going heavier... I don't want the fish to think about it and the faster rate of fall seems to give me the reaction I'm looking for.
Agree. Light for me is 3/8-oz. That's finesse flipping. ☺
I too have found that going to a 3/4 ounce weight seems to trigger that reaction bite, especially during the hot summer months when bass are holding tight to cover.
Sonar I like the idea of adding some weight to increase the reaction of a bait. The brush hogs and D Bombs are substantial and can always handle it without compromising their flutter or fall. Just subscribed today.

Interesting. One question. I fish ponds from the bank. Most of the ponds I fish are very shallow so I scale back on weight for most things. Would you say that, while going heavier, I should still scale back?
For example, I use 1/16-3/16, and occasionally 1/4 for most weighted rigs and baits. So, step up to like 1/4-3/8 for pitching and flipping? Or still go with 1/2-3/4?
Great question. Actually, when fishing from the bank it’s a little bit different. Traditional flipping and pitching is more difficult from the bank due to the angle and distance you are positioned from the cover. I would say that if you were to make adjustments to heavier weights, I would do so in smaller increments than from a boat. I would say I’d probably only go as heavy as 1/2oz from the bank, but as always that depends on where you’re fishing from and what you’re pitching to.
@@SonarFishing That makes sense. Same idea, increasing sink rate, but not stabbing the bait into the bottom before they have time to react and bite it. Thanks for the reply.
And yes, flipping and pitching isn’t the same from the bank. It’s what I’ve got for now though, and it beats not fishing! 😁
