Nurseries can grow young succulents in cocopeat very easily. They live under different conditions though. The nursery has special lighting and controlled temperatures. They also have people who constantly are taking care of the new cuttings and propagations. The succulents are not meant to stay in the cocopeat for long periods of time. Most nurseries here will repot the young succulent in a soil that has organic material and Perlite before it is sent off to be sold. That kind of mix provides some more drainage and it is not as much of a shock to the young succulent as a major change in soil would be. They ship out their plants as soon as they are ready to go. They are businesses and successfully raising these succulents is how they make their living. They don’t do things that are harmful to their stock but on the other hand once you get the succulent it is up to you to know how to properly care for it or you are going to have a dead or poorly growing plant.
If you take a look at some sad succulent that has sat in a store for an extended length of time you will see that it is not doing nearly as well as it did when it first came to the store. There is shock in the transportation and there is shock to the plant once it arrives at the store.
The young seed, leaf propagation, or cutting will do well in cocopeat or other organic material for a while if it is carefully taken care of but as it matures it needs well draining soil or it will die.
When the succulents are just starting out the roots are very easy to damage. Cocopeat is very easy for the tiny roots to settle into. I do not propagate in the same soil as I have my more mature plants in. Sometimes a leaf will fall in a pot and start to grow pups but as a whole I use more organic material when I am rooting a cutting or doing leaf propagations. The trick is to keep the leaves dry while they are still attached to the pup. Some people just put the head of the leaf into the soil and some people prop the leaf up against the side of the tray so only the pup touches the soil. People have different ways of doing these things. They find what works best for them and their particular way of life and if they don’t take advice from successful growers then they will end up quitting. .
I know people who propagate with only cocopeat but when the propagation is old enough to be potted on it’s own they start it off with a soil that has more drainage and eventually it ends up in the mixture for mature plants.
When we grow regular house or garden plants we use special soil to germinate the seeds in. It is the same with succulents. You start then out with a soil that works best for an immature young succulent.

They take cutting and leave in cocopeat pot so it forms roots. After that the pot keeps moving hands. From grower to resellers. So by the time it reaches us. We see the roots fully formed

I'm new to succulent world ! I've lost two succulents within one month from buying them and yeah they were potted in mixture of Cocopeat, compost and garden soil by the nursery guy. It started with root rot and then the stem rot. I've about 10 succulent/cacti and they are all only in Cocopeat

It is indeed true, the nurseries don't give the plants in actual potting mix.
Someone once told me that they give fungicide in nurseries in very mild amount at fixed interval of times.. And it acts like drug to them. And when they come to us we don't give them that and they eventually die even if we have transferred it to proper succulent soil medium.
I went to some local nurseries and their they buy plants, succulents in red soil and even clay soil from some sellers.
Which obviously don't even survive with them if not sold immediately. Most of them have stopped buying succulents.
And funny thing is so many nursery owners don't really know even the plant names, or soil or proper care tips for such plants. Yet they sell them. They say we just use soil and cow dung.
Or maybe it's just the situation of my city.
No wonder I have to turn to online solutions and products.
Maybe I should really give up on succulents or move to banglore or some hilly areas where succulent nurseries are so much in numbers.. 😉 😂

yes its actually very sad but the issue is they wanna run the business they are just given the plants as per the market demand they have no clue about the care and the needs ...i have heard many people say that the nursery person said these are indoor plants and they will grow well indoor also ..soil is mix is another disaster and i have personally seen them dump so many succulents that are rotting in the trash so many as they all start to rot in a months times if not sold and they trash it

@@LushGardener such a heart breaking thing. They are ready to throw the dead succulents. But not ready to sell it in lower prices so that maybe some of them fall in proper care and have some chance of survival.

can I use only cocopeat for cactus without soil mix for long time

    • @LushGardener
      @LushGardener  Рік тому +1

cactus m not sure... the few cactus that i have i use the same soil mix what i use for my succulents sand and garden soil i don't thing cocopeat will be a good growing media for cactus as they too don't like excess moisture in soil
