- Sailors of the Royal Navy frigate HMS Montrose have received an emotional welcome home at Plymouth this morning (Friday) after more than six months at sea.
She sailed into Plymouth Sound, where she was greeted by a seven-gun salute from 29 Commando Royal Artillery at Plymouth Citadel.
A crowd of 700 cheering families and friends were waiting on the jetty with the Royal Marine Band.
HMS Montrose has been deployed as the Atlantic Patrol Task South ship, protecting and promoting British interests in the South Atlantic Ocean. She has also been providing reassurance to the inhabitants of the most far flung British overseas territories.
The ship's commanding officer Commander Jonathan Lett said: "Having navigated over 35,000 nautical miles, patrolled in three oceans, visited five continents and six British Overseas Territories there is a real sense of achievement amongst the ship's company.
"From the frozen wastes of the South Sandwich Islands to the tropical paradise of Bermuda we have faced some significant challenges but the team can be justifiably proud of a job well done.
"My ship's company are clearly glad to be home and back with their families after six and half months away."
HMS Montrose will now undergo intensive maintenance before returning to operations later this year.
