  • Опубліковано 27 січ 2024
  • Matthew Wright speaks to former Brexit Party MEP, Ann Widdecombe, about whether it's time to apologise for Brexit. Despite the suggestion, Widdecombe stands firm, asserting that she harbours no regrets about Brexit, except for concerns related to its execution.
Tensions rise during the discussion as the ex-Tory MP accuses Wright of being rude and interrupting her, ultimately prompting Widdecombe to end the conversation.

The next step, is what you point out: "It goes well." In science, mostly in natural science, it is called an "Optimum phase".
In this phase I remember Farage saying on Sky News: 80% of the Brits now support Brexit.
But step by step negative effects are seen, which could not have been predicted.
And tendencies which have happened before are differentiated.
Farage has stopped mentioning that 80% are supporting Brexit now. He even stated that Brexit has failed though this was a tactical approach to help the Reform Party which would do better.

I find it hilarious when these people who led the charge of the Brexit brigade talk about doing things 'properly'. Aside from the blatant lies and ludicrous claims they made to convince people to vote in favour of Brexit, the worst thing that they did was not do their jobs properly in working with the EU to reform it and make it into something far better and resilient. The truth of the matter is that most of these Brexit leaders are nothing more than English nationalists and have equally little interest in reforming the governance of the union of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. Everything they claimed about the EU is evident in the UK parliament also and yet, they have no problems with that. They are nothing more than hypocrites.

I honestly think the referendum shouldn't have gone ahead until we actually had a "vision" in writing on the table, because it seems that no one in the Leave voting side had a single clue what it was they wanted. They wanted so many things, and yet no one said "Can we actually have a list of these demands, so we can work out whether our membership is stopping us from having these, or whether we ever lost/had the things we want, and how many cannot co-exist?"

Agreed, and it shouldn't have gone ahead until the accounts for who and why it was being funded were complete.
I think that's an important point for any big decision. Who are the players and who is paying for it?
Sadly, following the money rarely provides any comfort.

You're absolutely right. I live in a country where Amendment to the Constitution requires approval by Referendum.
We have a Referendum Commission, who engages Senior Counsel, to write up the case, for and against, and that is delivered, by post, to every registered mailing address.
It is also quite common, for our Government to publish the Heads of the Bill they would introduce in the legislature, if the Referendum is passed.
And even with those levels of information and preparation, I would still advise against using Referendum as a mechanism for approval of any great national issue on a single question.
It's far too ' binary ' , at a point where the issue is still far too unforeseeable.
Even a two stage Referendum would have served you better.
Referendum No 1 :- In, or Out, provisional.
Referendum No 2:- If Out have won, provisionally, here's the Heads of the Withdrawal Agreement.
      If that's defeated, no exit.

Brexit was just a way of Cameron quelling the headbangers because he was arrogant enough to think he could get away with it after the Scotland vote.
It was never meant to happen so didn't need to think it through.

we could have got a Norway deal but would have to be rule takers unlike norway we have little to sell the fishing industry is less than 1/2 % norways is something like 15/ 20% of gdp and growing also they still have ton of oil/gas it would have been better not to have the referendum and left things as they were

Steve Baker has come closest to admitting Brexit was a mistake. He says it should have required a super majority, not 52%.

Don't be fooled by Baker's 'conversion'. That's just him and the rest of his Brexit cabal softening up the ground for a super majority for 'Brentry' referendum

10% change their mind soon after every referendum. A super majoity means the winners are still winners, despite losing that 10%.
