Key stuck in ignition? Try this...

  • For the 2006-2010 PT Cruiser, may work on others, not sure. This video will hopefully explain why your key is getting stuck when trying to eject it after putting it in park.
Lots of things I skipped mentioning in the video so I’ll put it out here and add links to other videos that helped me take things apart;)
The interlock cable is one that regulates the safety feature where the key won’t eject in any other gear but park. Plus car should only start in park or neutral, and other features found in the cruiser service manual. Without this cable, car may shift more freely or start in other positions other than park. Sounded dangerous so I really worked hard to fix it.
This helps explain this cable more:

I was able to take out the console with help of these videos:

You might want to replace this bulb while you have the console out:

I was able to remove the steering column covers and see that yellow tab with the help of this video:
    • How To Replace 2006-20...
If you need to replace the whole shifter as i did, i was able to just gently pry the shifter cable off the bar (cable on the right in video) Some will have a c-clamp or something else holding it on. Mine didn’t.
Once you remove the cables, the shifter assembly is held to the floor with four 13 mm bolts. Double check that, but just find the right one as you unscrew with ratchet set and extender to make it easier.
The ball knob on the shifter bar is held on by a 3 mm screw under or side of ball. Be careful as you do it because it’s a small screen you don’t want to lose. You may have to remove that before attempting to take the console out. (see console video above.)
God bless and good luck with your fix. Only by the grace of God I was able to stumble on this so I hope this video helps.
Other videos I watched that may help understand more, I'll add them here soon.
Thanks also to expert "Steve W." on 2carpros.com for responding quickly and helping me with answers as I fumbled through this process.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU...SOOO MUCH!🙏My husband & I were at our wits end after trying for almost two hours to figure out our "stuck key" issue. Ours was also fine...UNTIL...after we had taken the gear shifter apart, to replace a broken interlock latch, on our 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. Why that part was ever cheap easily breakable plastic is beyond us,🙄but we replaced the broken one with a heavy duty metal latch/lever. All was good...UNTIL...we then couldn't get our key out of the ignition. My husband had said, early on, that something didn't "feel" quite right with the interlock cable after he put it back in place, but he couldn't figure out what it was. We viewed multiple videos on YT, and tried several suggested fixes, nothing was working. We were about to give up, when I finally found your video on YT. It was the real fix we needed. Did exactly what you showed. Pulled our key out of the ignition. Had to put the whole casing back on under side of steering column...as by that point we had dug much deeper than necessary. We finally got to go in house for the night. Hallelujah! 👍👏🙂

My key sticking got worse after I took it to a mechanic, They said I needed a locksmith. The locksmith actually figured out it was this cable and no, the mechanic is not making good on it. Thanks so much for this video, very helpful!

Been there, done that with my 2005 PT Cruiser, & it would drive me BATS!

Yeah I hear ya! I about had it with that thing, until “the solution presented itself.” But that PT cruiser is still rolling on with more than 250K miles. Redid the wheels and painted the fender with a racing face so it’s certainly one of a kind now 😂.

Parents 2007 pt crusier, they have been sticking their finger up.in the ignition to jiggle the tab to get the key out. I believe this may be the fix. Thanks in advance.

Awesome. I can see that. Hope you can help your parents make it a little better. PT Cruisers are cool, but it's getting rare that anyone knows how to fix these "vintage beauties" lol.
