  • “I am the firstborn child and I was raised by my grandmother, who was very old world Palestinian. When I was two and a half, my brother was born, so she was really happy to have a son, and it made me feel like I was less important.
I remember my mom telling me that I needed to do some kitchen work and my brothers didn’t have to, so at an early age I decided that I wasn’t going to learn how to cook.
Growing up I always imagined that I was going to have a child. I think that might be because that was the only possibility that was modeled for me. I didn’t follow the path that everyone expects is the safest path.
I have 25 or 30 cousins. The pictures on this wall here are the ‘moment of marriage.’ I got my PhD a couple of years ago, and I put my picture holding my diploma up there because… ya know - I guess that’s my baby.” -- Kathy Z., #LivesofWomen
