I loved this show... simple, easy to follow stories and realistic, middle/upper middle class type characters... just dramatic enough but not over the top like today's soaps.
Ah Yes..I thought of Chuck Mangione too when hearing this music..Although I wasn't a regular viewer of SFT back in 1984, I do recall seeing it from time to time and this jazzy theme didnt bother me in the least. I'm sure Mary Stuart was just thankful that she still had a job at this point.
When SFT came over to NBC, three affiliates in Iowa never aired it. During its final week, one of them aired the last five episodes. Its competition, RH and LOVING on ABC was also preempted throughout Iowa. It sucked!
I found the mid-70's version that I remember as a child when my mother watched Search for Tomorrow. Guess it's not the original, but it's my favorite. Thanks!
Thank goodness for the digital age andAndy internet now we can go watch the show's over and over The guiding light alone with take up thousands of hours on Blu-ray
The theme needed to be updated for the 80s, to follow the P&G Soap Facelift of 1981-82. This arrangement of the theme does not sound like Kenny G's work, nor is it crapola.. we're talking about two different sounds there. The style of this is more along the lines of Chuck Mangione.
You can find a complete episode from 1962 right here on You Tube--the thumbnail image is two old ladies in a Dash detergent commercial. But anyway, that will have the opening & closing title sequences used until about 1973 or '74, except that it will be in black & white. I think "SFT" and CBS programming didn't go color until 1967 or so. If you want to hear just the theme music, there are soundbytes of all the "SFT" themes on the SoundAmerica website.
This portion of Search For Tomorrow is brought to you by Secret Deodorant and Antiperspirant, Strong Enough For A Man But Made For A Woman and by Coast Deodorant Soap The Eye Opener. Join us again for Search For Tomorrow, now stay tuned for Days Of Our Lives next on NBC followed by the continuing story of Another World 35 minutes from now.
I never watched SFT and yet alone it went off the air 9 months after I was born, but I saw the "THEY STARTED ON SOAPS" specials on SoapNet and when I saw her segment, I thought she started in 1985 or 1986, I didn't think she appeared by 1984.
I know what you mean, considering the fact that Ms. Stuart was nearly ousted by Maeve McGuire the following year. Thank god she stayed on through the bitter end.
For people living in OH-Ky-WV Tri State area or Kanawha Valley in the 1980's...Did WSAZ cancel Search for Tomorrow after about six months in order to expand NewsCenter at Noon to a full hour? I lived in Ohio and visited my grandma in eastern Kentucky and I believe WSAZ did this....I am sure that Search was also pre-empted on NBC affiliates in both Cincy and Louisville at this time. Please reply ASAP....Great video!
Yeah. Similar situation in 1975 when "Edge of Night" moved from CBS to ABC, and then ABC put it at a bad timeslot of 4pm (ET), and a few years later, at least about 50% of the ABC affiliates dropped the show in favor of syndicated programming.
I couldn't disagree more...I associate the jazz theme with the beginning of SFT's decline. "SFT Close January 28, 1980 - Monday" on You Tube is the quintessential theme.
An honest critique....this show was terrible in the beginning!! ...sllllow and boring.....it had promice last few months but it was to late....that being said...iris and vivian...and ruby and lurleen were phenominaly entertaing!!

I had caught that similarity myself. I had wondered if anyone else had noticed that. It was very much Chuck Mangione. :)

And NBC ditched Password PLus when it picked up Search from CBS in March 1982.
WDIV didn’t air Password Plus had seen it on Game show network and watch it now on Buzzr
I agree. I think this was the most beautiful theme ending to Search.
Me too.
"Kentucky Bluebird" is probably the most humorous name for any TV character not featured in a Family Guy cutaway gag.

Saw who?
She who?

The show was dead last in the ratings for some time, so NBC pulled the plug.
i wish NBC had given it a chance it was getting better with Pam Long at the helm but They cancelled it anyway
My mom watched this show...I vaguely remember it...but when NBC got the show and CBS got rid of it, she quit watching it
Who is the artist?
0:36 - Batman!

We lost Search in 1983 when our NBCstation WDIV expanded their news to 1 hour and after that they aired game shows in that slot
Does anybody know if a closing theme exists on-line from when SFT was on CBS?
I had the honor of interviewing Larry Haines ("Stu") a few years back. Click onto my page and you'll find it. It's in three parts.
Low ratings, I'm sure.
