    Why the hell did he hit the dummy with the hockey stick like that? If you're gonna club someone with a hockey stick you don't switch to a face-off grip to do it...

  • @imazombieable
    @imazombieable 9 років тому +54

    He holds the stick wrong so he can't get the right leverage and hit correctly thus making less force

    • @volundrfrey896

      Yeah he's essentially hitting with a 20cm stick.

      Владимир Ленин Not really no. If anything the ice and skates will help you gain momentum. That's the type of logic expected from someone with Lenin as his avatar.

    • @imazombieable
      @imazombieable 8 років тому

      +Владимир Ленин you haven't played much hockey have you. You can easily get enough momentum to get enough force

      +Владимир Ленин no it really isn't hard with ice skates on. Not in the slightest. If you played and were good you'd know that

    okay, a bat is much more likely to cause a concussion and has more weight. but a hockey stick if you swing it the right way, not like a dumbass like they do in sports science, is more likely to break bones because of the smaller area even though it has less weight, its force is greater in a smaller area

    • @CAVEMANsean
      @CAVEMANsean 10 років тому

      Exactly the small surface area it would hit would do a lot of damage, plus they would be able to generate the same amount of force if they did a real experiment which everyone knows you have to do the same thing with both, so unless he swings the hockey stick like he did the baseball bat or vice versa, it's not an experiment, it's grown men hitting a crash test dummy for fun

  • @michaelguerra5888

    The stick is lighter and less rigid but his shot was a slow, jabbing strike. If swung at full length, the velocity is much higher and that velocity would make a huge difference.

  • @RobbyBombay

    who the hell holds a hockey stick like that in the first place

  • @sharkdude8814
    @sharkdude8814 8 років тому +7

    This test does not take into account that not all players have the same weight and flex of a stick. If Shea Webber lost his marbles and used his stick like mcscorley, he may actually kill someone. .

    • @volundrfrey896
      @volundrfrey896 8 років тому +2

      And that it's stupid to hold the stick that far down so you don't get any leverage. It's almost the same as if he hit with his hand.

      David with this logic that means a Giancarlo Stanton would hit the head 470 feet out of the stadium clear off the body....the point of it isn't to get professionals it's for estimates for average sized person

  • @rickgrimes6947

    first of all most people wouldn't hit with the stick like that they would cross check the chin or nose to break them. they wouldn't choke up on the stick and slash them in the face

  • @redratfish
    @redratfish 11 років тому +1

    I agree a bat is more deadly, but 1, hold the stick properly, 2 get a stick that has a professional flex, 3 swing the stick properly.

  • @ninjahata
    @ninjahata 16 років тому

    I think the idea behind the way he hits it with the hockey stick is that it is how one is likely to use a hockey stick in game, already gripping it in such a manner (for play) and bringing it up, as opposed to using it 100% as a weapon.

    1. he held hockey stick completely backwards and way too wide. All the energy came from the rotation of his torso.
    2. They used a composite stick when in every single instance of pro players using a stick as a weapon, used a pine or maple stick or alluminum shafted stick.
    3. They are completely ignoring the impact of the head on the ice, which is what knocked Donald Brashear out, not the impact of the stick.
    4. They should have brought Mcsorely to deliver the hit.

  • @petergeyer7584
    @petergeyer7584 4 роки тому

    Interesting test, but it asks the wrong question. First, in the Brashear/McSorley incident, the 3rd degree concussion was not caused directly by the slash to Brashear's head but by the fact that he hit his head on the ice when he fell down. Second, how many times has a batter gone after a pitcher with a bat compared to how many times a hockey player hits another in the face or head with their stick (1:1,000,000 on a bad day for baseball, maybe?)? Third, a hockey stick may not crack somebody's skull open (although the ice certainly will; see above), but it will certainly remove more than a few teeth and will cut up your face so even your kids won't recognize you. And fourth, yeah, who holds a hockey stick like that?

  • @13millerd
    @13millerd 10 років тому +5

    That was a low flex and if your going to cheap shot in the face with a hockey stick you hold it closer to the end. Plus odds are you would use a wood stick if you want to do damage.

    couldve done with testing on a proper human skull analogue (ie a skull encased in ballistics gel). the wider baseball bat, i would guess, will disperse its impact over a wider area, whereas the thinner edge of a hockey stick will not disperse energy so much, so the impact will carry a higher amount of pressure to the smaller area it hits. cant tell if there would be a difference without trying it, but it got me thinking

  • @marythomas5510

    Man, this is the episode that would prove no one on the crew plays hockey. Who holds a stick like that?

  • @AO93
    @AO93 16 років тому

    I play hockey, and it's basically common sense. You know the bat packs more force cause the stick is lighter and flexs and a baseball bat does/is neither one.

  • @sawyernovak703
    @sawyernovak703 10 років тому +1

    Use the REpower and hit the dumby properly. Those sticks are made of tough shit and if he hit right it could be more lethal than a bat.

  • @TheHYPO
    @TheHYPO 16 років тому

    Yeah, the technique is one issue. If you wanted to hurt someone, you'd have your hands gripped closer together, so the end of the stick achieved a greater speed. This is more like a crosscheck but with the blade.
    I also think that if you used a classic wooden stick (as used in many of the classic incidents), you'd obviously see less flex and greater injury.
    Nevertheless, I think it's fairly obvious that a baseball bat will do more damage in almost any comparisson

  • @Thoroldhawk
    @Thoroldhawk 12 років тому

    Baseball bats are so much heavier than hockey sticks... A hockey sticks manufacturers goal is to try to get as light possible while still being durable. Everyone saw this one coming...

  • @joshuaburns160
    @joshuaburns160 9 років тому

    Hockey sticks are thin except for goalies which are also not meant to be hit in the heat with plus all the flex we use for our slapshots bounces off the head

  • @Schmudli
    @Schmudli 8 років тому

    I suppose the big impact got brashear when his head hit the ice, the slash with the stick kind of took him out and the ice finished him.
    Most of the times when you fall to the ice your head lands last with that typical snapping motion.

  • @tastybunns1
    @tastybunns1 10 років тому +1

    You know, I agree that the baseball bat will be enough to kill you, but they really should have allowed 2 trials with a pro hockey player and an MLB player. That would have really brought some accurate results instead of however you held that stick completely wrong. I also think even though a stick cant "Often" kill you, you will experience horrible pain in the face, break your nose, loose an eye, or cut some part of your head wide open. I think the stick would be more damaging because the impact is focused more on one point of the face with more impact time than the baseball bat. The baseball bat is spread out when your face rounds to the whole bat, and whenever something is spread, energy is absorbed.

  • @MasterMewtwo239
    @MasterMewtwo239 16 років тому

    Yeah I agree about the stick. He held it so that the results were frightfully skewed. They're going to swing that stick like a baseball bat, not like a martial arts weapon!

    I wonder what flex that hockey stick was, maybe they should have tried with something round 120 flex (as something that high is normally only seen in pro-stock equipment). And of cource what everyone else said about the way he swung the stick.

  • @therubixman
    @therubixman 13 років тому

    should've mythbustered it. Remove variables: have them either both made from wood or the same composite material. Have the hockey stick slash from a range of flexes. Use the same form.

  • @Mrbiggestbawss

    they should do more sport science segments on hockey. None of the ones I've seen did the sport justice. why don't they analyse things like slap shots vs wrist shots, skating power, stability/balance, shots from the Slot, Deflection goals/hand eye coordination...) There's tons of impressive interesting stuff to analyse.

    I think if they got a 100 flex stick (which is probably fairly common for professionals) and swung it a different way it would have been over 150HIC probably easily. No way it would ever get close to the bat because of the difference in mass alone.

    They really should hold the back hand grip on the hockey stick. Like the position of the bat. Then the stick would go a lot faster. And they should use a stick with less flex. Because most cheap shots happen in High School+ levels. Not a flex like a 10 year old would have

    even though it would have had a greater force, the baseball bat would still win, because hockey stick, wooden or carbon composite, are designed to bend, and a baseball bat is solid, and hockey sticks tend to be hollow, most anyways.

    Well if he had used the same grip on the baseball bat as he did the hockey stick there would have been a lot less force created. But I guess he is holding them the same way a player in each sport would hold them. Still if he held the hockey stick the same way as he did the baseball bat it would have had much greater force.

  • @Moose6340
    @Moose6340 11 років тому

    I mean, I don't doubt that the bat would do more damage because it's got more mass and less flex. But still, judging from what has been seen in NHL games in the past, that stick has to be capable of a LOT more than what the dweeb did with it.

  • @raidenbellen9627
    @raidenbellen9627 5 років тому

    It wasnt fair fause the stick was hollow and the bat was solid wood. The stick flexed because it was composite. And composite means it can flex without breaking using a certain material. Such as a brick. It isnt composite and if you put pressure it would break. A wooden baseball bat however, doesnt flex because it is solid and wont bend on impact. There are such things as a wooden hockey stick and a composite baseball bat. If they went against the same material and structure, it would have been fair

    I play hockey and have to admit the bat is worse but not 1850 HIC worse.
    Rarely does a hockey player get hit with stick and almost never a baseball player gets hit by a bat, but hockey players wear helmets because of many things such as a stick. Baseball players don't wear helmets because a bat rarely hits them, only the person at bat wears one because it stops some impact of the ball if it hits them.
