- This short 1940s Navy training film, TF 11-3046, shows viewers (who would have been U.S. Navy sailors or recruits) how a sailor can quickly lose his hard-earned pay. The film follows Bill Adams, an arrogant sailor who cashes his paychecks and keeps the money on him in an apparent effort to flaunt his wealth. The film opens in the sleeping quarters of a navy ship where a group of sailors are settling debts. The men then go ashore (01:33), and Adams, who has 7 months pay in his wallet, and a friend go sit at a counter in a café for lunch. Later, Adams goes his own way and starts drinking heavily. He eventually makes his way to the Bulldog Café bar, where he stands outside smoking a cigarette. Inside the bar, an inebriated Adams tells war stories to a group of people and is oblivious to a woman stealing his roll of cash. The film ends with a drunk Adams sitting at the counter of the first café, destitute as he is broke and missed his ship’s departure. He's now AWOL and S.O.L.

That was better than most Hollywood plot lines of the last 20 years!
It would make a good gangster movie if they combined it with the plot-lines from the one about Military Police.
My dad was career navy. He would tell me you always carry a fake wallet with 2 bucks in it. He called these women bar flies. I've always remembered this I carry a chain wallet. And I don't drink. Going to visit him right now he's 90 years old still tough guy.
The number one rule of shore liberty is DON'T GET DRUNK! I saw a few of my fellow Marines get into trouble because they got drunk and lost control of themselves. I had a two-drink limit when drinking in the bars. I still observe that limit. After 2, you make a fool of yourself and you become a target.
My brother lost money in many times by same way than in film sailor did. R.I.P.
Aaah, just the same old story:
"Jack and Jill went up the hill.
Each had a buck and a quarter.
Jill came back with two and a half.
I guess they weren't gettin' water."
DICE!!
Damn it! I wish I'd seen this day before yesterday.
That old cop sure had it right: "It's instinct. Drunks, cats, and homing pigeons..."
What this film forgot to show is that he's going to lose all that money again from the punishment when he get spotted wearing those ribbons by an officer of his ship. He's surely too drunk to take them off again, but if he goes back looking like that... He's done for, he'll be lucky if they only confiscate 7 months pay.
Impersonating awards, insignia, and rank is one of the more serious offences that doesn't have a grey area.
This actor did a nice turn in the role.
I love it... jumping off the liberty boat before it's even alongside the pier lmao... I wish i could've been in the Navy back in the 30s and 40s
Never Hit the Beach alone always Have Your Shipmate With You Keep your money Inside Your Jumper Close To the chest I Guarantee You Will return Back To the Ship with Money This Guy Should Have Known Better A Third class Petty Officer With four Years.
1:54 "does she rim?" is his real question!
He didn't get half of what he deserved, even stole his mess-mates medal ribbons.
Yes stolen valor a felony nowadays
Truth...Wearing ribbons you haven't earned is a big deal...
@@claytonmontanez2262 Probably only in 'murrika with it's weird military worship fetish.

Hey, what's the idea lousing up my gag?
Great upload, a real treat to watch
"how was the boat ride"...... Priceless!
That story line has been many a movie and a fair few mini series too.
If he had a horse a dog and a pick up , it would be every country and western song ever written.
I wish they played this at Great Lakes RTC. I got rolled for fifty bucks while out on liberty in Chicago.
Good ol' Great Mistakes. What year, shipmate?
1989
@@chesucat Ah, that was the year I got out. I was in Great Lakes in late '85 and most of '86. Thanks for the reply. I hope you're doing well.

I just watched the training film (smart boy) which has a longer version of this video
I want to see those STD movies where they tell you to avoid loose women.
One sailor has insignia patch on left arm - other sailor wearing insignia on right arm. Why is that? Any Navy person out there can explain? Just curious....thought insignia was always worn on left arm.
Deck rates, like boatswain's mates and this gunner's mate, were "right hand rates." All other rates were left hand rates. Rated deck hands were senior to all other rates in matters of ship handling. For example: in an underway replenishment when all available hands are sent to assist, a petty officer in a deck rate would be in charge of the working party even if a more senior "left hand rate" were in the working party. Eventually it was recognized as a distinction without a difference in actual ship operations.
Since then, with the end of mess precedence, all rating badges are worn on the left sleeve.
rsternfla it sucks that they got rid of such an awesome tradition.
Classic Bill.

The blonde lady hustler was great in her role. Wonder if she was a real Hollywood actress?
@Randy Walters Interesting. She was a great actress, I hope she ended up happy and lived a long and full life.
No she was a real slickie girl.
