- Follow along as I plan and build this cheap and easy DIY SUV bed platform in the back of my 02 Nissan Xterra! It comfortably sleeps two and cost just under $100 to make. I'll admit that I'm not much of a carpenter but this was a very simple project that most anyone could do.

I'm currently designing one for my Gen1 Xterra. A safety suggestion: use the tie-down points in the back to secure the platform and everything beneath it in place. Connect it with straps that are easy to untie for removal. The problem with SUVs with all that gear in the back is an emergency stop creates a lot of material flying into the front, including heavy items. In my pickup I have a headache rack to prevent that, I don't get that with the Xterra unless I use a cargo net and tie things down.
Thanks for the tip! Yeah I had some extra cargo nets laying around that I used to secure some cargo and close off the opening in the back. Seemed to work fine even when hitting some awful trails haha.

How did you find out how to make the bed level?
I didn’t really. I just chose a height for the four legs in the back and made sure that the two legs in the front (by the driver and passenger seats) were going to be taller than the legs in the back so that it angled up slightly where my head is. Reason I did that was because my Xterra naturally dips downwards towards the front so by making the legs a bit longer where my head is, it levelled it out better.
How long do you think it is from the bumper to the back of the front driver seat of actual sleeping room? I’m guessing 6feet long and maybe 4feet wide??
I’ll measure it again when I’m back home but yes it was roughly what you mentioned.
