I've always been more of a Batman fan and never cared for the Superman character, but this film really changed my view on him. It's one of my favourite comic book films of all, with a killer soundtrack.
Same here, I was always a Batman fan and never liked Superman because he was to perfect but after seeing the trailers to this movie I got excited and loved how he was portrayed as a lonely person and struggled to fit in. Now Batman and Superman are tied as my favorite superheroes 2nd Wonder Woman.
+TheoKabala89 I'm not a big Superman fan here, but I loved how they focused more on his imperfections than his positive traits. They showed how afraid he was, how he questioned if helping people was the right thing, if he was even worth existing among the humans. And then of course, how he was forced to kill the only known surviving member of Krypton. He had actual character development this time around, unlike every other Superman movie.

Same! One reason I love this film remains a point of contention, but it's the fact that this Superman is far more vulnerable, prone to some angst and making mistakes, which is a far cry from most depictions and makes him much more relatable as a protagonist.
Im a Batman fan too,but this movie made me like Superman,not in totality beacuse he needs some changes,like when he is coming to save everyone so easy.I belive Supermans needs a villain what is opposite of him,to push him to some choices.Like Joker was for Batman. I mean what if Superman cant save everyone.I like couse they have done this when Superman kills Zod.But in mainly i like this movie. I just said how Superman would be more on my liking.

I agree. I've seen it on the biggest screen in southern hemisphere in 3D and the sound of 10.000 WATS. My kidney's were shaking every time he punches the bad guy from that bass. THIS is the BEST Superman EVER. This actor fits this movie 100%. All i wish for now is more Superman movies with this guy.

First of all thanks for commenting on my post and second (for me) this movie was really awesome because it shows Kryptonians' planet with fantastic special effects just like the comics, Michael Shannon did an amazing job as villain, Russell Crowe acted superb as usual, Antje Traue was a badass and gorgeous Faora and the film also explains Clark Kent's struggles when he was a little kid and his struggles when he was a teenager as well, the film also shows the aggressiveness of what the character is about. there many things why i considered this movie the best ''Superman movie'' ever made but if you are disagree with (my opinion) i absolutely respect yours.
Krypton looked good but it was too dark and medieval looking. Some of council member robes were quite ridiculous looking. Also not a fan of seeing Jor-El with the S-symbol on his armor again. The green armor with the planet logo would have been something new.
As for Shannon's Zod. It was too hammy. Despite the character's motives he came across as a one note villain who sought death and destruction whether he was on Krypton or on Earth.
While I don't have any problems with Crowe's Jor-El apart from preachy exposition dialogue I disliked the movie making the character more important than he really is. Jor-El's role in the story should end when Krypton is destroyed. His sole motivation is to get his son off Krypton. Having Jor-El guide Superman and giving him his suit defeats the point of the character - he's supposed to become Superman on his own. Now he's literally thrown into the role...again.
Faora was indeed a badass!
Clark's struggles made him look like Peter Parker. Clark Kent is supposed to have a happy childhood. The way he was bullied and the questionable way Jonathan taught Clark I'd image he'd become a supervillain instead of a hero. At least I don't see Clark becoming a beacon of hope. He's not strong or charismatic enough for that.
I would never describe Superman with the word aggressive.
If you haven't already you should read All-Star Superman or watch the movie version of it. That or watch Superman vs. The Elite. Those stories understand what Superman is about.

One of the most impressive trailers in history and the movie is awesome.
Even after Snyder Cut JL, this movie remains uncontested. It's simply a timeless masterpiece. Nolan and Snyder just created history, this movie will always remain the best DCEU movie ever. The score, screenplay, cinematography, story, direction, VFX, Sound mixing, color grading everything is just perfect. A real shame how WB wanted more MCU comic relief popcorn flicks over extremely high testosterone movie.

Unfairly criticized and mocked, Man of Steel is one of the most underrated superhero movies in this day and age. It is my absolute favorite movie period, a shame it doesn't get the love it deserves.

Yes and no to the marvel fanboy part I know some who love this movie, but most of the hate is the destruction I loved this film in theaters then I kind of hated it when I understood what the hate about it was but recently I've accepted this movie as one of the most greatest super hero films lately due to the fact that it's relatable and realistic due to make tough choices in life, sacrifices and taking a stand in what u believe in for example the tow truck guy harassing the young woman and Clark steps up to knock it off but chooses not to fight the bastard for the greater good, but terrorizes his truck instead, the plots not great but it's decent the cgi destruction action is my only negative I think Zach Snyder should've put in more emotion and depth to the destruction against Kal el, I'm a huge comic book reader and I prefer dc comics this is the super man movie we needed but not deserved at the moment but I hope BvS corrects it's predecessors flaws and I hope Aquaman and WW kick ass as well as the final fight between batman and superman is very emotional grounded and dramatic, as long as Snyder can pace the movie correctly I'm sure it will be great pacing is what's needed in movies with many characters and moments for example interstellar the movie has simply great pacing keepin the audience entertained and caught up to date on story, a bad example is prolly amazing spiderman 2 for it has many sub plots and characters that randomly enter the screen as a reveal that falls flat or the screen time for the character didn't get the correct time needed for their significance, I hope BvS outshines mos and is a fantastic film
I'd say it is just Marvel fanboys. For some people I think they're stuck in the past and were expecting a happy Christopher Reeve movie but everyone complaining about the destruction was an idiot. It's not like The Avengers didn't cause any damage to the city. All the Avengers were experienced heroes but still wouldn't have won without the military nuke to destroy the space ship (which conveniently made the entire army randomly drop dead) whereas it was pretty much Superman's first day yet he stopped the entire planet from going to extinction by only putting a few holes in a gas station and a coffee shop along with an empty train. Hardly counts as "knocking down buildings" which was actually Zod, not Superman lol

***** Idk what it is man, believe it or not those things you mentioned I haven't even noticed. I feel it was a weird collection of events and the setting was just strange. The way the world reacted to aliens and superman was a bit off...That scene where he had to hold the burning oil rig in place and the Kevin Costner's death scene looked so corny. Plus I never really felt for Superman during the movie. I feel we were just watching a man with problems grow up, grow up into someone we knew was going to be victorious in the end and that kinda bored me.
the fight sequences did go on just a little too long. but that's more of a critique than a reason to hate the movie. people always complain about the destruction but how else do you think a fight between these kinds of beings would play out?

I love how when people say this movie was bad, they don't really give their opinion, they just say that it wasn't the Superman of 30 years ago. Superman is no longer the same and is not only films now.....seriously has no one read The New 52 or what?
Let's just add a few things:
1. "Superman should have left the city like he did in Superman II" - No, Zod and team didn't really give a damn about Kal, they were there to build Krypton, Zod wasn't exactly there for revenge. "Oh Kal is gone...well Faora I guess we better stop all of our plans and the World Engine, and go for him".
2. "Superman doesn't kill!" - Yes, he had. I love how this is gonna be played out in the sequel. Just wait for the sequel, we all know that decision has a purpose.
3. "Superman doesn't care about the people" - He does, in a freaking normal way. Why? Because it's been like what...a day or two since he found out about his identity? He's just a normal guy with superpowers. Jor-el and Pa Kent show him his potential and now he knows why he is here for. In fact, he es not Superman yet.

Yeah but the last hour of it is just this doofer flying around in circles for the lolz, I like how they tried to take a new take on the whole thing. In fact it really appealed to me, but after god knows how long of special effects filler I felt like this was a movie which wasted its potential and had a shallow plot line. Fair enough if they were following the new 52, but they should have changed a few bits and pieces here and there to make it more fit for the big screen. Nolan did exactly that with The Dark Knight trilogy and thats why they were all critically acclaimed. Saying that, batman begins was worse than the other two so maybe they can turn it around. Hopefully not with Zach Snyder though, I thought those fight scenes would never end

No this movie is a piece of shit, and I'm not even comparing to the original.
It's interesting how all the timeless masterpieces were disliked by many fans and critics when they first came out, mostly because they broke new ground. Critics didn't like Alien, gave 2001: A Space Odyssey bad reviews, weren't too keen on Batman Begins, et cetera. Then a few years go by, and the same people laud them as landmark films. I think we will see that with Man of Steel. Once the DC Universe movies are in full swing, Man of Steel with get some reevaluation in a new light, and it will get the praise it deserves (though already some critics are already changing their minds about it... it's amazing how fast that happens these days).

Personally, I liked Superman: The Movie and Captain America: The Winter Soldier better, but this was a really good and highly underrated movie. My second favorite Superman movie and certainly among my top ten superhero movies.

I don't see how people say this movie is bad. Can't directors just give a different perspective on a Superhero? Why does Superman always have to do everything perfectly and not kill anyone? This focused on a NEW Superman, let me repeat, a NEW Superman. Imagine Earth was like Krypton and you were sent to another planet (and say you were like Superman on that planet). You live your entire life as one of them, but you secretly know what you are capable of). After 20+ years or so, Earth's military finds you and threatens to destroy the entire planet and you're the only one that can stop them. "Ya I'm suddenly a master at martial arts and I know what to do in every situation I can destroy them easily ya no big deal". Like, seriously people? It's not the movie that's bad, it's the audience not looking at the movie's vision and idea. Everyone expected a superbadass Superman that does everything 100% perfectly (I mean how boring would that be, right?). I'm glad this movie was made, it showed people that not every movie has to be like Ironman (the Ironman trilogy was highly, highly overrated).

People misuse a lot of words and Hero is definitely one of them. I liked this movie quite a bit especially Jor El's Heroics at the beginning.
*Think you hit the nail about the tone> Most all other Suoes movies had that uplifting narrative in the end, BUT I knew from just the start of the trailer - how they made it seem like an alien invasion, I could gather that this was a total re imagining and it was going to be dark if not scary... and that Thrilled me that finally somebody has the guts to not just play it safe and easy and make another friggen love story... nope, we got to see some scary shit where the people of Earth played a part in whether to trust this guy as one of us or one of them. I that it was fucken cool!

I don’t understand how critics or anyone else hates this film
They hate this film because it's not remake of Superman 1. Just like critics hate the thing (1982) because it doesn't remake the original 50's version. What funny thing is the thing 1982 and this movie are much more closer to books than original movie
2019 this movie is still one of the greatest movies ever made !!!! I adore this film so much !!. The music, the plot, the cinematography, the acting , the action!! This movie is insane!!! I love it !!!
I've lost count on how many times i have watched the trailer, the movie, the scenes on youtube and listened the scores as well. I keep coming back still. WB, you shouldn't have listened to "Rotten Tomatoes". You still have time. Start listening to the fans.

+Thomas Mallilo Well, probably they're a TEAM of EXPERIENCED superheroes and also supported by an armed specialised military forces? Superman is almost just probably on his day one of being a superhero, facing and alien invasion by himself with the aid of some military forces. His foes are pretty much as equal as him in physical abilities, and mostly are genetically selected and trained soldier, just that Superman have longer experiences with his powers.
+Hans Hoffmann You won't because marvel movies are apparently perfect and if you criticize them apparently you're a hater. On a more serious note I think its because of the tone. I guess the more comedic tone of marvel movies distracts people from the destruction. In man of steel its more serious so more people noticed it. Also, they've probably never seen a DC cartoon or read a DC comic because metropolis gets destroyed all the time from superman's fights

This made me wanna watch the movie yet again this month
The Dark Knight trilogy began my more mature understanding and love for cinema when I was little, but Man of Steel shot it to another level. It was the first film where I analysed symbols, noticed directing and acting choices, and critiqued things I didn't really like. I'm so pissed that we probably won't get a second one.
This deserved a sequel.
gotta love this trailer even in 2019, the background music when he speaks makes general zod even so menacing and true to his nature and what he is capable of.
