    Hey man I work on the trail crew here at Snowshoe. You’ll be happy to know we have recently removed that pointy rock from 10 Gallon. Come on back up and give er another whirl!

      hahahaha That's funny. It's such a non issue too, park riding just got in my head. But i'm trying to organize a return trip in 2020! Snowshow is legit good fun!

    Can't belive it.. You're the first tuber that do not blather while you're riding.. Nice #1 try to the park, you have nothing to worry, nobody want you to blast down, ride you confort level and every ride you'll progress and free yourself up..

    Came here from your Armor vid.
    I ride a lot of chunk in the North East. Where you crashed, you came off the last rock too slow, your weight got up over the bars, and very likely when the wheel dropped off the rock it jack-knifed on you. It seems counter intuitive to pedal in there if not used to it and just trying to keep your feet on.....
    But one pedal stroke as a set-up to that rock (either right or left) and then take it as a drop instead of a step down and you would have been golden. That .0005 delay as you tried to pick your line did you in. Been there and done that. haha.
    Awesome vids man. I am doing my first park this summer and the jumps are what has me nervous. Lots of tight wooded singletrack, roots/rocks, and drops where we live. The wide open tall jumps have me wide eyed every time.

    haha the tire plugs can be hard, inflate the tire first to take some give out of it... riding a plug is totally fine, but the location technically deems it unsafe per automotive safety standards and to replace it if 1 inch from sidewall. Great riding, tons of fun as always.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      Guineson Thanks! When the plug gets close to the side wall I generally take it in to get a proper patch. 👍

    Good video. Enjoyed yours and Alex's perspective on the first 3 runs. Also stoked to see a 28 minute video. That was really exciting. Hope the bike gets fixed quick.

      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      Thanks! I really lamented over the 28 min length. I figured, oh well, it's long, if someone doesn't want to watch the whole thing, they don't have to. :)

  • @CalvinYuMTB

    For park, I always open up the LSC, that will help smooth out the chatter and braking bumps. Obviously, this gives you a little less mid-stroke support, but for park I don't find I need that support as much.... unless you hit some technical downhills at the park.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      If i would have ridden my bike more, i would have opened up the MRP ramp control to make it a bit more plush. But then we did end up riding more tech stuff later that day. Good advice though! Thanks!

    You and Alex were giving me the feels about Skyline (the first trail). We did MTB Nationals there and couldn't ride skyline due to dh laps. I really like that trail, because it is one of the only jump trails I still feel comfortable on. The jumps are far enough apart that you can gather your wits. Probably because I have been to some parks before, so these were more tame than the bigger dj-style jumps (lips far taller than any person) you can probably hit.
    Also, sorry about your bike. Stupid rocks. (also worried about the blues-to-blacks vibes since the blacks get super sketchy in Snowshoe, even more someone from central PA with experience in chunky rocks). But kinda crazy you made it through Ball-n-Jack after talking about chunky rocks on skyline.

      Frank Stec omg, we did ball and jack ONCE. HAHA. took the little off chute to the right. Forget the name. Down to sweetline. That route was our fav! 😍 Bike will be ok, thanks!

  • @bullseye0112
    @bullseye0112 6 років тому +1

    Joe easier said then done, but when you get thrown harder stuff and you feel scared and mentally unsure, you have to let go and just relax. Mountain biking is definitely a sport that makes you gun shy and wanting control over the uncontrollable to avoid injury(100% real), but it's how you manage those emotions and control fears to make your experience better by letting it flow. Or you stop, validate your position mentally and emotionally and take your time till you are ready. Hope you are alright, stoked you got your first bike park experience, its totally nerve racking the first time, I was super nervous.

      Mr Tonka If you get to that place where you are just freaking out but still trying to go, just stop in honor wherever you're at mentally. The more park riding you do the more fun it becomes. I crashed at a park also and it definitely put me back a little bit as far as confidence, but I just go at my own pace now

    Dude, that tip of going with someone who knows the trails for your first trip to a park is spot on. Like Alex, I also went by myself for my first bike park trip, and it took so long to get to know the speed, the features, and the directions that I really only hit my flow by the end of a very long day. And even then, I wish I had been able to get towed into jumps and drops. But it was still an epic day! I had so much fun I did about 50 miles of riding according to my satellite tracker

  • @WasabiWei

    I gotta say as someone who has spent years fixing tires "Please for the love of Bike cut a tire plug off level with the tread." It might wear off, but if the twist didn't take it might pull itself back out as well. Plus it just looks cleaner and does not turn into a string of goo encrusted by gravel bits.
    It is kind of creepy watching this after seeing the broken frame from Alex's perspective. I am feeling some sympathetic pain. Those cracks look almost like a bone fracture. Taking too much weight would likely be a splintery mess of a failure. "Dammit!"

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      A smoky burn out is my preferred way to remove the excess tire plug. :D If you listen closely you can hear the carbon crack and it does sound like a bone. :(

    I like the vid... especially your thoughts on the riding experience.... subscribed.
    Any suggestions on tuning a trail bike for park to help deal with the vibrations? I ride a 29” Stumpy with Ohlins suspension and I too found it very chattery the first (and only so far) time riding downhill. I tried lower suspension pressure, more rebound damping, and moved my brake lever reach closer to the bars to some benefit, but would love more suggestions.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      Shane Wilkinson I was thinking a 29er would smooth out some chatter in itself. But someone suggested lowering low speed compression on the fork. But I don’t really have a solid answer than, get a bigger bike. 😂

    • @shanewilkinson9479
      @shanewilkinson9479 6 років тому +1

      Mr Tonka yah, I’d love a quiver if bikes! I’ll try adjusting some compression damping next time, and maybe a bit lower tire pressure.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      Just be careful with the tire pressure. Too low for the rocks will give you flats or dinged rims.

    • @shanewilkinson9479
      @shanewilkinson9479 6 років тому +1

      Mr Tonka good point. I usually run 23-25 psi on 31mm internal width rims with no rim strikes for trail riding, but that day at the park I ran 30 psi as recommended by old-school downhill dudes. I think it made the ride quite firm. However, i9 Carbon hoops are not cheap to replace.... as you know, it sucks breaking carbon parts!

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому

      Based on your normal trail pressure, i'd bump it up to 25 - 27. I think i was running 26-28 and it was good.

    Great video bud. If i may give you a little advice if you're getting hand pump real bad, try lifting your brake levers a little bit. If they are too far down, then you're using a smaller muscle in your hand. If you raise them a little higher, then you will use more of the larger muscle groups in your hand. Just doing that minor adjustment, will drastically help with hand and arm pump.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  4 роки тому +1

      ThatGuyAbe724 thanks bud. Since then I’ve positioned my levers quite high, almost level. Rode Windrock bike park a few weeks ago and arms and hands held up well, considering 5 straight days of riding. 😬

      Mr Tonka I went through all of those as well. I brought my new Stumpjumper st with its fixed seat post and sharp as heck flat pedals. The seat post almost killed me because it wouldn’t go down and moving around it on the techy stuff was impossible. I couldn’t feel the bloody shins and calves because I was having fun after a while.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  6 років тому +3

      It's a lot of, "good news travels fast, bad news travels at the speed of light!" I've had one break as a defect. One broke because someone installed the head set wrong. This one broke because rocks break bikes. :P It's a 27 pound trail bike with a 160mm fork on it. So it's not made to bound off of rocks. Apparently they want me to go AROUND the rocks. hahaha
