Probably the best description of how you should take the club back, and then return to hit the ball. Wish I had had this information 20 or more years ago. Well done Danny.

Really good drills, my only concern would be the danger of not completing weight transfer and starting a bit of a reverse pivot, whichis where my swaying came from.
The image of the spiral staircase was so helpful. I’ve been reading so much online about how to rotate my shoulders and it hasn’t really clicked until now.
@@DanielMaude I initially wasn't thinking about my hips coiling like a staircase. Once I got my hips in a better spot my striking improved. It feels pretty amazing because my arms are so much more free. It feels weird at first because I think my back swing is way too steep, but the resulting downswing and striking feel so good.
Thank you for this.I think you have such a great way of teaching and relaying these tips in a very simple way thats easy to understand. Can't wait to try this out.
This video changed my game! Thank you. I dropped literally 16 strokes by watching this video. Now before anybody gets excited. I was averaging 116 lol 😂. This bought me down till a 99. Now I can start learning this game
Thank you Danny for this video. I have been the same golfer for over 20 years had flashes but never really improved. Once I put this into practice it was like a light switch, even my miss-hits where straighter and farther
Fantastic video, Danny!!! This is so simple to understand! As I mentioned in comments to some of your other videos, my biggest problem is how to transfer my weight to my lead side in the downswing/impact without sliding or swaying, and as you aptly demonstrated with stopping first at the top and then proceeding down and through, it all just happens naturally! Truly a gem of a video! Thanks again and please keep them coming!!!
Definitely will try this drill to eliminate the sway on my backswing. Plus the drills for the move to start the downswing. Has taken a long break from playing golf, time to rebuild the rusty swing with something more consistent and a better player! Love the detailed explanations and drills.
I've been battling Swain on my golf swing for years. Your description of this has been a light bulb moment for me. Ever since I started playing golf it's always been turned the hips. But when you said up and back. It's been a night today difference. Thank you
Thank you for this important instruction Danny. So many of us have had the misconception of the weight transfer being a lateral shift back and then forward. Which, as you know, is totally false. I've struggled for years trying to stop swaying, and so many times I was under the false impression I stopped when actually a video of my swing showed I was still swaying. It was astonishing how difficult it was to stop and equally as astonishing the improvements in power and ball striking! Wonderful delivery of the instruction, thanks again.
Paul Lazarus, it’s amazing isn’t it. I too was brought up with the instruction to slide the hips. So much more powerful when you are able to remain more stable.
Danny after watching all your videos I finnaly got to go to the snow covered driving range. A long time problem I didnt get cured watching you is Keeping my head down. I always turn my head to the right and Im conscience of it. But I keep looking up HELP. Thanks Dan.
ROBERT FERRARA the head has to move in order to turn properly...the very fact that you are trying to keep it still is likely to be forcing it up. Actually try looking up on purpose, you might be surprised at the result
Among the best instructional videos on the internet-many thanks. It seems when you demonstrate the spiral backswing you are slightly leaning left with a mini reverse pivot. How do you maintain the spine tilt to the right while you're performing the spiral? Also, please consider doing a video on the role of forearm rotation and wrist hinge in the swing- how much is correct and when does it occur? Many thanks!
Really good question Leonard. Check out my training on "how to correct a slice here ua-cam.com/video/iVBDfx1ehcM/v-deo.html Theres an exercise I give their where I put a club across my chest showing how to maintain the spine angle. Just let me know if this helps. Its 3.05 mins into the training
Thank you sir! This my default demon when things go off the rails. Will start practicing tonight! Looks like I could even build that practice turn into my pre shot routine.
Hi Danny, I had trouble with this and I used the mirror technique you mentioned for practice. What really helped was drawing a vertical line on the mirror in black felt tip and then placing my right hip on the line at set up. You can instantly see if your hip goes outside the line on your backswing which equals a sway. I would forgive myself if my hip came INSIDE the line, but it shouldn’t move more than the width of a golf ball if it does at all. Make sure the wife is out before drawing on the mirror. Thanks for the great videos.
Hi Danny I love watching your teaching on UA-cam.Excellent Presentation.Question: I have a problem as to when my back swing should be complete and my down swing should start, because this is where a lot of things can go wrong. I find that if I pause at the top of my the back swing for a second or two it triggers the start my down swing and the tranfer of my weight to my left side. What are your thoughts?
Brilliant insight into backswing motion to stop sway plus the idea of pressuring the ground, required for actual golf play vs the range. One of the best golf instruction videos. 50 yrs of golf
Danny Maude The least I could do, just been out in the garage with a wedge. Yes, you’re bang on, coiling upwards is exactly what I haven’t been doing, going to be a struggle to adopt it though😟
Hi Danny. I note the reference to Mr Cowan and his spiral. Have you ever been able to understand his “axe drill”. I’d love someone to explain what that’s all about because I can’t work it out!
This is great Danny. Do you have a tip or a video to help me from swaying forward ie not sliding the hips forward or the upper body getting ahead of the lower body on the downswing/follow through?
i like the spiral concept you explained! That helped me very much in my overall swing, even if swaying wasn't really my problem, but it fixed my slight over the top move!!! go figure!!!!lol!
Love the videos! One question; how much movement should the hips move to the target at impact? So as to have the low point of the swing after the ball. Thanks Vince

Another gem Danny, thanks! I caught myself swaying in a video I took of myself today. The spiral up is a great visual to help me. I'll be using the mirror method you recommended to fix it. Then I'll go to the range and do the other drill. What are some of the faulty results of swaying? I'd like to understand what part of my swing should look better when I correct the sway. Thanks!
Danny, great video. Just discovered these and have already been through several of the others and will be putting them into action on the range soon. I tend to suffer from swaying to the left on my downswing. Is there a drill that would help prevent that? Thanks, Phil
I love this concept so much and it is helping. The only issue I am having is I think it is making me pull the ball slightly on my irons. The ball goes high, hits the green and rolls to much now. Other than that, your spiral staircase anology is wonderful!!!
Danny, do you use the same spiral technique with the driver and woods? Your video on driving straight stresses a rotational swing using the big muscles in the back and down swings. You don't cover reaching the top of the back swing with a flat left wrist.
Peter Esposito, yes you do. The difference is when you spiral back down with the woods the ball position is further forward more in line with the front foot so the clubhead hits the ball on the way up as the body spirals up into the finish.
Danny, I dont sway on backswing but I intentionally shift left on the downswing because I was spinning my hip out, & early extending. So is shifting left on the downswing while keeping my hip depth okay? Once I shift left, I start my hip turn....
Great video and a seriously major problem for me for the past 30+years.. I have the additional element of a buckling trail knee towards the top of the backswing, which is demoralising to say the least! Any tips for that? 😅
Thanks Danny - i will try that drill out. Can you explain when we uncoil our body during the start of the downswing, does the bottom part of our body stay still? Or we 'open' the bottom part of the body towards the target and then start the downswing? The reason i ask this is if i place a training stick under the ball and in line with the direction i want to hit towards i notice that after i make contact with the ball i immediately hit the stick. This is how i physically see that i have done an out to in swing. Hope you can give me some pointers or direct me to one of your videos to help cure this issue.
Thanks Danny, great as always! Im swaying and my Pro recommended to me, to keep my weight left all the time, he's a Fan of that swing style, guess that's called "Stack& Tilt"? Sure that's a big discussion, what do you think about that?
Personally I’m not into methods as they suggest everyone is the same and thus we must all swing it this way. I think keeping centreded over the ball however is generally a good thing as it keeps things simple
Absolutely! You are helping me cure all my bad habits and believe me, there are many so I really welcome your extremely helpful videos. By the way, I'm a huge "Swayer"
Danny, in comparing this (which is excellent) with your other awesome video about setting up to the ball, it seems like they contrast in that one has your left shoulder high at address and the other is lower. I think it's almost more of a optical illusion and this probably confuses me most. Thoughts?
Thanks for the feedback. Having looked at the two videos I probably exaggerate the set up a little to illustrate the point in the How to address the ball video. If you feel your left shoulder may be a problem just experiment on the range with slightly different heights and see what happens. As pros the left shoulder will be lower at address when we play lower shots and higher if higher shots
I’ve started to watch a lot of peoples swings. You can see the knees bend to move the hips. Lead knee bend trail leg straightening, a sort of butt move towards lead leg to start the downswing while reversing the knee bend, but more weight towards front side and really an increase in weight. I do have a more connected upper body though also. Kind of hogan esc. But nowhere as good. But I do tend to feel myself sway instead of turn sometimes when I try to increase the foot plant
Tom Joyce the key is to use the ground, if you throw a ball you just don’t slide...try it...as you plant your lead foot down it braces and your body rotates naturally around it
I understand the absolute importance of no sway on the backswing...however all great players fire their hips towards the target on the downswing. Is this not a sway/slide? Or would you advise more of a circular pivot of the hips? btw ..excellent videos.
Cheers for the video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (just google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for revealing an effortless golf swing technique without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.
I have found this really helpful and is working. However sometimes I find I come down too steep (particularly with the driver) and hit the ball far too high. How can I get the ratio correct?
Danny, nice video as always. I have a question. My lower body does not sway, but my head moves back a fair bit in my swing. I do get it back to close to where it was at address at impact, but still tend to hit fat shots. Do you think the head movement has anything to do with the fat shots? Btw, I have tried everything to stop the head from moving too much, but it keeps on happening. As soon as. I start the move back my head goes with the club seemingly.
@dannymaude if I keep my weight on the inside if my back foot on my backswing, is that a good way to tell myself I am not swaying? What if my weight feels flat on my backswing? - its because I tend to raise my front heel on my backswing. Thanks in advance.
I used to be a slider & I was continually flipping and hitting behind the ball. When I stopped sliding and kept my hips still, I stopped flipping & hitting behind the ball....BANG!
lee south , thanks Lee, just simply come back down the spiral staircase. Most golfers don't, instead they jump off the staircase on the way down often described as coming over the top. Rehearse it in a mirror first so you can see it...spiral up the staircase and then follow the same staircase back down. Do it slowly at first, even stopping at the top so you can concentrate on what you need to do
Should the backswing spiral start with the feet / ankles and wind up or does the act of swinging the club up and back create the spiral or does it matter?
Great question Steve, it’s different for everyone but what gives my clients more success is when they sense their feet anchored to the ground and the pressure starts from the ground/feet.
Great video Danny! This is a serious problem of mine. I played a lot of baseball and used to dig a hole under my right foot to stop it when at bat ,can't dig a hole in the fairway. Ha ha.
Surely there has to be some lateral movement with the lower body on the downswing (towards the target) otherwise we would be striking the ball exactly as it was at address. The arc of the swing needs to be moved sideways, bringing the lowest point of the arc just target side of the ball. The staircase thought works well in the backswing, but then has to be shifted for it to work throughout the rest of the swing.
barry nicholas, great comment Barry. There is a gentle shift towards the target but it's minimal. It only needs to move a couple of inches to have a ball turf strike. This training is for those that are swaying excessively. Too much lateral movement reduces rotation and hip clearance through impact. Hope this clarifies things
I’ve noticed lately that the bottom of my swing arc is erratic. Sometimes thin sometimes fat . I suspicion I’m swaying a little and I think it’s moving the bottom of my swing. Is this true? Thanks for the tips this game can get really frustrating at times.
there isn't a sway forward on the downswing, when you see the pros move forward its more of a squatting of the body that moves the body towards the target. Imagine tossing a ball towards the target, you don't slide towards it but instead increase the downward pressure of the feet into the ground and naturally rotate
This may explain why I hit behind the ball. Seems instead of climbing up, I turn around and then lower my right shoulder in the down swing. Something to work on.
Mark Lucey, possibly Mark if you collapse your left leg but as long as this keeps strong you will be find. Also feel like your chest is moving over the right leg
Hi Simon, thanks for the feedback. Check out my latest training on how to strike your irons pure. In it I demonstrate how to rotate through the ball correctly. I also give you my left foot back drill that really helps this. The best way to stop swaying going forward is to work on staying centred and clearing the left side out if the way through impact. People who sway slide their body through impact as opposed to rotate it.
Mair Owen, sounds like the club is heading over the top of the ball from out to in. Make sure your your head and sternum are in line with the ball. Then make some swings making sure you don't move ahead in front of the ball at Impact but instead stay in line with the ball the moment club strikes the ball

@@DanielMaude your feedback is much appreciated, thanks! love the way you see it! Greetings from Germany
Thanks Danny! Love your videos! They are extremely helpful!
John Schwartz, very kind John, thanks for the feedback
Absolutely! You are helping me cure all my bad habits and believe me, there are many so I really welcome your extremely helpful videos. By the way, I'm a huge "Swayer"
John Schwartz, thank you, my latest video should really help: ua-cam.com/video/SQufESjduQI/v-deo.html
Super! Thanks again!
A fresh change from today’s overhyped instructions. This is the way its meant to be. A gifted instructor
tom hie, Thank you Tom, I really appreciate the feedback
Danny - you've shown how to avoid a sway on the backswing, but how do you prevent swaying on the downswing? i.e. swaying forward? Thanks
See the swing as more up and down. So I think the downswing look to push upwards from the ground as sliders glide across the surface
Like the way you break it down into several discreet steps.
Thanks John, let me know how it works out for you
I’ve started to watch a lot of peoples swings.
Great idea to help with the back swing but the problem isn’t so much the back swing but the follow thru. The slid at the follow thru .
Fantastic video!!! Would you also recommend using the same image for the part of the swing from impact to finish?
I think that would work as a great image Bill
I have found this really helpful and is working. However sometimes I find I come down too steep (particularly with the driver) and hit the ball far too high. How can I get the ratio correct?
Keep your back facing the target a little longer as you start the downswing...this can help the club drop on to a flatter plane
@@DanielMaude Brilliant. Thanks Danny
Vintage Chief thanks for sharing, really helpful
mint i never knew this .. what is your thought on the way back down ... like in your add power video using your torso many thanks
lee south , thanks Lee, just simply come back down the spiral staircase. Most golfers don't, instead they jump off the staircase on the way down often described as coming over the top.
Rehearse it in a mirror first so you can see it...spiral up the staircase and then follow the same staircase back down.
Do it slowly at first, even stopping at the top so you can concentrate on what you need to do
many thanks danny great explanation .. i do slide .i enjoy your videos many thanks
What effect does sliding forward on the swing have and is this a bad thing to do? Thanks for this video by the way
I think most of the best players have some sort of slide going forward. They balance it out with rotation though
@@DanielMaude Thanks
Should the backswing spiral start with the feet / ankles and wind up or does the act of swinging the club up and back create the spiral or does it matter?
Great question Steve, it’s different for everyone but what gives my clients more success is when they sense their feet anchored to the ground and the pressure starts from the ground/feet.
Does this drill work for the driver as well? I dip, sway and have an ever bigger sway in my downswing. Any drills for that Danny?
exactly the same with driver
@@DanielMaude it's been 4.5 years since I started playing golf and I just can't hit the driver :-(
Great video Danny! This is a serious problem of mine. I played a lot of baseball and used to dig a hole under my right foot to stop it when at bat ,can't dig a hole in the fairway. Ha ha.
Randy Mahony, thanks for sharing 😁😁
Great advice. Thanks Danny
spiral upwards is the key word!! thx coach
Thanks Halim, look forward t hearing how it goes
Thanks
Brilliant video Danny thanks
Thanks William, would love to hear how you get on with it. Keep me updated👍
Great explanation, thanks. Subscribed
Thanks Paul, appreciate the feedback
Good instructions as always 👍
Thanks Rosalyn, hope you've had a good start to the week
I’ve noticed lately that the bottom of my swing arc is erratic. Sometimes thin sometimes fat . I suspicion I’m swaying a little and I think it’s moving the bottom of my swing. Is this true? Thanks for the tips this game can get really frustrating at times.
Danny. What about the sway forward on the down swing
there isn't a sway forward on the downswing, when you see the pros move forward its more of a squatting of the body that moves the body towards the target.
Imagine tossing a ball towards the target, you don't slide towards it but instead increase the downward pressure of the feet into the ground and naturally rotate
Great drill! Love your videos! Have a question: ls the left knee flex during take away a bad thing? I see many people do it. Thanks.
Zhongkhue Cha yes as long as the right leg doesn’t straighten too much
Great video, thank you!
This may explain why I hit behind the ball. Seems instead of climbing up, I turn around and then lower my right shoulder in the down swing. Something to work on.
Let me know how your practice goes Mac
Very good instructions
golf golf, thank you, let me know how it goes
Great video easy to understand
jay willingham great to hear Jay, thanks for sharing
Is there a danger of tipping your upper body back towards the target here Danny (a reverse tilt so to speak)?
Mark Lucey, possibly Mark if you collapse your left leg but as long as this keeps strong you will be find.
Also feel like your chest is moving over the right leg
Great advice Danny
I cant just leave a like for this Danny! extremely helpful mate cheers have a coffee \o/
Thanks for the support 🤜🏻🤛🏼
@@DanielMaude No thank you! next time I will get you a full cup :)

Never heard of staircase but it works. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback, I like the visual of a staircase in the golf swing
Great lesson can't wait to put in to practice R .Cusack Dublin
Thanks Richard, come back here and let me know how you get on 👍
is this spiral action the same for a driver
Absolutely Paul 👍
Brilliant thank you 😀
Marcus Sheldon my pleasure Marcus
Can you advise what right fingers should feel up to and including impact?
Not sure I understand this question Ken
Hi Danny I can get this bit right but then sway in front of the ball on the downswing!!! Any tips please it's driving me crazy!!!
Swaying is a killer, Good instructions
Thanks Wayne, let me know how it goes
Hi, developed a sway in my swing and at impact either hitting top of ball or ball coming of hosel-any ideas why?
Mair Owen, sounds like the club is heading over the top of the ball from out to in. Make sure your your head and sternum are in line with the ball. Then make some swings making sure you don't move ahead in front of the ball at Impact but instead stay in line with the ball the moment club strikes the ball
