- In this video, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb of Athletic Motion Golf show you how to fix one of the most frustrating elements of the golf swing: sliding or over-sliding in the downswing.
We'll break down where you need to be at the top and at the halfway point, which is a great benchmark to look at, and where you need to be by the time you strike the ball. We'll cover the A-frame setup, re-centering at the top, and the downswing, including how to drill it for your golf swings.
We also provide visual checkpoints to look at your swing and improve your consistency. If you want to hit the ball more solidly and consistently every time you're out on the course, check out our number one consistency drill by clicking on the link in the first comment below.

I dropped a bunch of money on a chain lessons place that uses tech as well, and what I'm realizing as I watch these videos and try these drills is the place I went to is all wrong. They were too focused on symptoms and not causes, and trying to manufacture a forced move to make a video look right, where these guys get right down to the root causes. The approach on this channel is way better I think. Plus these methods actually take less effort during the swing. I'm really impressed.
Thank you. Glad it’s helping !
Most golf pros have no idea what they're doing. It's super easy to get status as a "professional" now
This has really helped me in my swing. The lateral movement has allowed my arms and shoulder to tilt better as well, and not come around it. Allowing my arms to drop and keep that feel of keeping the back to the target a little longer. Where you see a lot of videos promoting the turn and wheel around. Which just cause more of a steeper swings or coming across the ball a lot easier. Back to basics for me again. It worked before, and still works. Should have never tried to change.
Mike and Shaun, once again you've made perfect sense and practical data work together. My golf game is not great, but definitely better because of you two. Thanks for your help along the way!!
Love hearing that! Thank you 👊. Stick with it 👏
Love this one💪
Such great content. I was trying to focus on 'opening' my hips but realising now that I was actually 'spinning' them, pulling the left hip back through impact, which was killing my strike. Thanks!
Superb explanation and visuals, boys! Especially appreciate around the 7:40 mark where you explain the right hip coming around and allowing the left hip to move just a bit more forward as we find the "end point" of the forward movement. Back to more slow motion work as I allow the correct movements to create my feels.
Awesome! Bank those reps 👊
Another great video! Your content is clear, concise, and supported by data. Love it!
👊🙏🏻
Mike and Shaun, you Guys are just awesome I've watched hours and hours of your you tube videos loving everyone but eliminate sliding along with pros v ams shallowing , having the slide and the arm path explained like you guys have done is just gold thanks so much
Glad they helped! Anything else we can cover that would be helpful to your game?
Excellente!
I just noticed from the menu over to the right that you did a similar video 5 years ago, How to Stop Sliding in Your Downswing. Of course, good advice bears repeating and you always have new viewers.
Been working on this for the past month. Great video. Thanks
Glad it helped!
So so clear and complete instruction no one comes close to this instruction tks
We always appreciate the kind words 🙏🏻👊
Holy bejesus! Brilliant analysis and explanation. Thank ye.
Thanks brother 🙏🏻👊
Hi Guys. I love all your videos. A question though… and I’m sure you discussed this in some other video. I’ve worked on the dynamic movement which has really shortened and stabilized the top. As I’m shifting forward, I have noticed (especially with longer irons) the ball flight and spin rates dropping (about 3000 rpm with a 5 iron). I’m still hitting the ball solid with total distance about 215 yds but the carry is around 185. Any advise? Please and thank you.
Excellent video guys. Working on this exact movement with my coach right now as I am a notorious slider of the left side. The gears illustration you provided makes it even easier to understand. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi guys. Great video as usual. For decades I have always over slid / swayed forward on DS - before you taught me about re-centering (thanks!). Is a forward sway on the DS the same as over-centering? Now, the only way for me to fix my over slide IS to feel like I'm making a counter "sway backwards" move during "recentering". Doing that I don't exceed the half leg goal and I can then swing left and send the ball straight. Is that different from what you warned against at the end of this video? Other than "don't sway as far to begin with", what else should I do? 🙂
Great stuff as usual guys!
Thanks brother 🙏
A little confused on the last point of not pulling your left hip back. I thought that was necessary to clear space for the right hip based on your Pros vs. Ams Golf Swing Hip Rotation video. Would appreciate a video combining what's covered here with rotation as well or clarification on how much your left hip should be coming back.
I remember when I first learned how to get pelvic tilt (left hip lower) in transition.
It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever done for my swing.
Gotta have that tilt 👊
Another breakthrough for me..thank you.
Thank you!
Great stuff!
🙏🏻👊
Never thought about this in terms of right hip or center of pelvis "catching" the left hip but that's a new feel for sure! Great stuff as my right hip has tendency to stop going towards target
You're not alone there. It's a different way to visualize accomplishing the same goal 👊
I have two questions, and Im putting then here because its your most recent video.
I tried looking up the right bend, but its all on the backswing/downswing. If I missed these in a video, please refer the videos for me.
Is the right arm bent at impact?
When you catch your weight during the transition is it all going to the left leg? (Lead leg)
Great stuff again
Glad you enjoyed it🙏🏻👊
Russ and others hit the key insight for me....Based upon other instruction, driving the left hip back was the focus - leading to struggle with right side getting 'stuck'. Low/left (pull) exit was a miss pattern. The video/checkpoint/data around left and right leg pattern and sequence is a powerful explanation and point-of-reset.
Data always wins. Thanks guys.
Yep, that’s become a more common problem we’re seeing from golfers. Pulls and wipes aren’t fun. Glad it helped 👊🤓
This really will help me out, just knowing what Not to do, as do to my narrow frame/skinny legs I tend to get out ahead of the ball....but the right hip is now stuck. Due to my build and 5-11 height some would think my stance is to narrow but it really isn't. Narrow hips and somewhat wide shoulders. Another thing I'm glad you mentioned was the "falling" more than forcing to recenter. Guilty there too. Sounds a bit like David Lee's gravity golf "counter fall", although not so drastic.
Glad it helped 🙏🏻👊
Another excellent video. Been working on trying to smooth this out in my own swing. Just seems every time I start push into my left leg the transition at the top of my swing gets shorter and quicker. I’m sure i just need to work slowing it down. There is definitely an increase in speed through impact, but think I’m leaving some power left on the table.
I'm right there with you, I suspect MANY others are, too...Porzak has a new video on tempo, worth a peek...it's a ONE TWO count from the beginning of the swing til impact...he recommends a long ONE and then a TWO that starts after transition...my TWO and most likely your's starts too early from the top, which may explain the shortish back swing and lack of flow...I haven't worked on this count yet due to weather, but will get after it soon.
Great video guys 👍🏌️♀️⛳️
Glad you enjoyed it🙏🏻👊
Something Nicklaus says in his book, Knudson too, that I've found helpful is to play from the insides of my feet. There is still a shift and fall as you guys always talk about but it's done from the insides of the feet. I find when I have problems over sliding, it's stance width related as you say. Playing from inside my feet really helps with this.
Yep! Rolling to the outside brings up bad memories from all the years spent on the hardwood. Getting weight to the outside usually meant crutches the next day😬
@@AthleticMotionGolf Knudson was a big advocate of a flat left foot at impact. That has really helped stabilize my lower body slide. I slide about the normal amount but it can always be firmer. That injury I've not had. Shin splits however...ouch..😂
Mike and Shaun, excellent stuff as always. Big fan of your content. Does this apply to the driver swing as well? Do you still want to cover the ball or will that prevent hitting up on the ball with a driver?
Upper body is more back at impact with driver
Love you guys using "Gears" to help us amateurs really see what's going on in the swing from a 3D perspective and not just 2D with our cameras. Thanks, I've learned quite a bit over the years. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Would it help to see more gears stuff related to what you see on your phone?
@@AthleticMotionGolf I think what would really help us is knowing what to look for from a 2D perspective and where we should place our cameras from DTL and Front as well as how high. or low the lens needs to be.
@@roadtoscratchgolf3481 we’ve done a couple videos on where to place the camera 👊
@@AthleticMotionGolf Thanks, I’ll look for them on your channel.
Funny this video came out. I was working on this today. For me personally I find my slide, when it happens, seems to be because of slight early extension. So trying to make sure my backside stays back and pushing my left hip back with my left foot seemed to really help. It's that push with the left foot and pull with the right foot.
Great!!
I've found sliding extremely helpful for my game...
In my golf downswing I really push hard with my lead leg "back" - but I mean away from the ball, not away from the target. My trail leg is way more passive, it helps me to push my pelvis toward the target at the end of the downswing, and to straighten the pelvis at the beginning of the downswing (getting the pelvis parallel to the target line). But later trail leg becomes really passive, and only supports me and helps me not to fall.
Basically, I use a lead leg to "fire those hips", as a main source of power to rotate the pelvis.
My problem is that it drags my path to the left, like 3-5 degrees.
Or I would rather say - I am struggling with maintaining the left shoulder bumped toward the ball to keep the shoulder line parallel to the target line...
You guys are the best
Very kind of you! Can I forward this to my wife? 😂
As long as you send your reply about me being kind to mine. 😂 Seriously. Your videos are like well crafted, easy to understand science studies. Always packed with useful, actionable data. The effort you put into each one is amazing. The structure, the various sources of content (gears, video, you two in the warehouse) and the practice take-a-ways make each one so valuable. Your teaching styles and your honesty about what it takes to become better make the process of trying to improve your game more rewarding. A very proud and thankful member of the online AMG team. Hope to visit you guys in person someday soon.

Hey Mike and Shaun I was wondering what’s the program you use on your iPad to draw the straight lines and angles with the ipen? I have both and I’m wondering if there’s a reasonable app to buy we’re I can video myself and use that to check angles and swing plane. I saw you guys use it in a different video couldn’t remember witch one. Thanks.
Golf coach app 👍
Hi Mike, Hi Shaun... does the width of the "A-Frame" change with the club selected? Is the A-Frame even subtly wider for a driver vs. a 9 iron?
Absolutely 👊
Another great video - thanks! One point of confusion for me - how do we reconcile the goal of 'fingerprinting' the buttocks against the 'wall' (like in earlier videos), while not moving the left hip BACK. That's the visual I've using and it's been causing me to keep the upper body back while hips stay forward. If I don't press that left hip back I feel like I'm early extending - what's the secret to opening up properly, 'fingerprinting' the butt and NOT EE?
Ok - after re-watching the "How the pros clear the hips" video I think I've got it. The left hip does in fact move more back (i.e. further from the ball) at impact than at address, but it does so more forward (i.e. closer to the target) than at address. I'm probably not shifting early enough and far enough before I'm bringing that L hip 'up against the glass' which is moving that hip away from the target. Similar concept but wrong execution. The devil is in the details!
I would also try and pay attention to the center of your hips. Make sure you have the right stance at address (hips close to over the ankles) and then you will automatically have the butt back out of necessity counterbalance your swing. When you open the hips during delivery while keeping the center of the hips just slightly behind where you started, your left cheek will be busting through the glass wall! The key is is the address the ball correctly. Look for one of their videos on set up!!
@@Natedogg9853 Thanks Nathan - I appreciate the feedback!
Also, do these movements apply to every club, wedges, irons, fairway woods and drivers?
They do👍
Keeps the buttons on your shirt and the buttons on your pants inline or over each over when moving forward. What happens when the button on the shirt get slightly ahead of the buttons on the pants? In your demonstration of getting pressure on the lead leg your shirt buttons got slightly ahead of the pants buttons. Do you see top players with a slightly more forward shirt buttons at club parallel on the downswing? Or is it highly recommended that the buttons on the shirt and pants always stay inline?
Once in the backswing, shirt buttons and zippers are tough to use for a detailed reference because of all the differences in rotation eternity players. It’s better to know exactly what those alignments look like for your swing. Comparisons could be trouble without knowing the other metrics involved 👊
You need to demarcate the differences in the width of the stance between a driver and short irons . The driver requires a wider stance( a frame ) than short irons. And because the stance is wider with a driver there will be more lateral motion by the end of transition .
One very important point which must be made is that once the outside of the lead hip moves laterally beyond the outside of the lead foot, a golfer runs out of range of motion to rotate the pelvis . In a very real anatomical sense , ( excess) lateral motion is the enemy of rotation
How much lateral do you think is too much.
Hi guy's
I've got a comment request from over here in UK.
Can I get your thoughts on trail side bend !!!
How and when should you add it ?
For the record, I've just turned 69 and playing twice a week of 13
Loving you channel
Kind regards
Dave G
We got a new video on the way about trail side bend 👍
Posture question: should I have my shoulder blades pinched backwards, thereby opening my chest up more (i.e. not slouching over the ball), at address?
Thanks!
No
@@AthleticMotionGolf thanks! Follow up:
Should my shoulders be broad and chest open, or should my shoulders roll in towards my chest and be a bit slouched?
@@pnickers4 relax the arms forward
Here
Great video! If the torso and pelvis move forward 4", how do you keep your head back in the center as the video shows?
Keep in mind that’s the center of the chest and pelvis. The chest and shoulders are still well closed at that point and the head/neck is turned. Those alignments are much different than what they are at setup.
Ya'll didn't mention how straight the lead arm gets, i.e., from shoulder to club head/ball making good impact and compression occur...from the lead thigh moving slightly forward :
Lots of great players are slightly bent at impact
What's the point I'm never going to get it.
With regard to your last advice not to pull the lead hip back and away, I recall other videos you have made using the avatars that show pros do pull their lead buttock back, while amateurs often keep the lead hip in place and rotate the trail hip out toward the ball and around, messing up their swing plane and contact. And here the pro avatar at minute 8:50, looking down from the top, pretty clearly shows the lead hip pulled back. So it seems you are talking here about a violent move back with the lead hip while the trail hip remains fixed, pulling the entire body back. There is a difference.
What we demonstrate here and warn against is pulling the lead hip back and away from the target direction. We’ve never shown that happening or recommend players do that. Because the pelvis is oval shaped and because it rotates, the lead side will move in towards the ball and back and away from the ball. That’s a completely different movement than what’s being warned against here.
@@AthleticMotionGolf Understood. That's what I was sure I had seen.
I know some gals would be doing the splits in stance to get their feet outside the hips
🫣😂
the new mic is not good.. Yall sound completely different
We using the same mics we’ve used for years. Same sound quantity as well.
@@AthleticMotionGolf Hmm. Something is different. Voices sound less full. Compare to other videos in same location where filmed this.. Sounds way different
