I've have just started having to drive through HP and cannot believe in how bad of shape it is in. Entire blocks of store fronts along Hamilton are collapsed and falling in the street. It feels like a ghost. Some of those buildings and homes were beautiful at one time. I'd like to know who owns all that abandoned property, including the Ford plant. I want to take my camera with me one day to photograph the place. It is mind-blowing what has happened there.

I spent a lot of my childhood in Highland Park. At that time, it was an upper middle class community with numerous thriving businesses. To ride through there now is like riding through a ghost town in some parts. In the video, I saw pictures from the street I lived on and it brought back memories of when that area was so alive and colorful, now it just is.

I agree! It seems like people who are in bad economic shape would want to keep what they DO have as nice as possible. I know some people, WHOLE NEIGHBORHOODS-who have next to nothing and STILL do their best to try to keep their neighborhoods presentable. That is FREE! All it takes is EFFORT! If everyone does their part, they can keep their neighborhoods presentable. For one-stay on these city councils and tell them if they don't do SOMETHING to get these eyesores demo'd,the gravy train's OVER!

I couldn't watch all of this, it's so depressing. Just to see those trashed and burned out ruins, and to know that these were all pretty neighborhoods with nice houses, well kept lawns and most importantly, families and friends, neighbors....
    It's just too much.

The sad thing is that there are a lot of places in this country that are or are getting to be like this.
I live in Beverly Hills and even parts of this place are starting to look like shit.
This country better wake up fast.

I used to live in Highland Park and I loved it. The beautiful old homes, the close proximity to downtown Detroit and the uptown suburbs. All the major freeways ran through the city making it fast and easy to go anywhere. I was completely blown away by kguyor1's video. My heart sank as what was once the "All American City" to a garbage filled, burnt out mess. How sad.

Highland park was once a nice place to live but now the majority AA's have turned it into a sewer...what does this say about them? other cities are similar....whenever a majority of a certain type are there the city is a bad place to live.

@kguyor1 I liked the video. I would like to see footage of the Highland Park Hospital that burned down. I was born there and given up for adoption 42 years ago. ;) I am heart broken that such a historical place has fallen to ruin. Why so many fires? Was it due to the Race Riots? I am hungry for the history of my birthplace. Thanks.

Nice presentation. I created and used to run the HP Block association website
( hpfolks.com ), lived in Highland Park for 30 years, left in '08. As the old matriarchs became inactive from old age or passed away, the last of the social fabric started falling apart. A critical mass of literati and socially active people eventually left, so there was too few people who actively cared enough to maintain the community.
I realized that here was no knight in shining armor coming to help - ever.

It has been over 25 years since I last went through Highland Park. This is sad to see but you could see it coming then. This was a city that was the dream of Henry Ford and one can only imagine what he would think if he was alive today. When I last read about it, it was on the verge or in bankruptcy. This looks like there is no tax base left so how does it survive?

Seems all the states should help each other. Very devasting to see our country in such a disgraceful pigsty. What happened, why couldnt the state see it coming, corruption? Greed?
    Terrible.

I know man. I haven't heard ONE good thing about Detroit, Highland Park, or Michigan all together for that matter from ANYONE that I've talked to who's lived up there. I'm just tired of working at a fucking sandwich shop and a shoe store for just above minimum wage and all he wants me to do is help him grow weed LEGALLY. Believe me, I know how impossible it is to find a job. I just feel like I don't really have a choice.

Hello's from Sweden. All I knew about Detroit was that it was a grand city comparable to Chicago. Now that I see these videos about Detroit, MI i get a mix of feelings and they aren't good. Mostly I feel sad but also scared actually. I mean wow I didn't know that USA could look like this. I also feel like going there to explore because, well it's also cool to be honest.

    • @lougardner3049
      @lougardner3049 9 років тому

Much of the destruction Detroit experienced in the 67 riots wasn't rebuilt. Economy tanked hard when the big 3 were playing catch up to the Japanese car companies. And I suspect arson for profit is the case with many of the home fires (not as much now) since insurance companies just aren't paying out like they use to.

@SomethingAintRight10 - I wasn't blaming the entire white race. I'm white myself, so that would be pretty stupid. I was merely blaming the RACIST white people who left the city. There are plenty of white people still in Detroit. They stayed because they cared enough to ride out the rough times of the late 60's. Not to say things are all better now, but still.
