I've have just started having to drive through HP and cannot believe in how bad of shape it is in. Entire blocks of store fronts along Hamilton are collapsed and falling in the street. It feels like a ghost. Some of those buildings and homes were beautiful at one time. I'd like to know who owns all that abandoned property, including the Ford plant. I want to take my camera with me one day to photograph the place. It is mind-blowing what has happened there.
I spent a lot of my childhood in Highland Park. At that time, it was an upper middle class community with numerous thriving businesses. To ride through there now is like riding through a ghost town in some parts. In the video, I saw pictures from the street I lived on and it brought back memories of when that area was so alive and colorful, now it just is.
I agree! It seems like people who are in bad economic shape would want to keep what they DO have as nice as possible. I know some people, WHOLE NEIGHBORHOODS-who have next to nothing and STILL do their best to try to keep their neighborhoods presentable. That is FREE! All it takes is EFFORT! If everyone does their part, they can keep their neighborhoods presentable. For one-stay on these city councils and tell them if they don't do SOMETHING to get these eyesores demo'd,the gravy train's OVER!
I couldn't watch all of this, it's so depressing. Just to see those trashed and burned out ruins, and to know that these were all pretty neighborhoods with nice houses, well kept lawns and most importantly, families and friends, neighbors.... It's just too much.
As I watched this Video..My Heart Broke. I used to Live in Detroit. How can People just turn their heads and just say too bad? why does the United States government Send Billions upon Billions of dollars in Foriegn Aid to Countries that Hate Americans anyway? They should be focusing on Cities Like Highland Park and Detroit. it just doesn't Make sense. I wish more people could see what's going on in this country and wake up to what's going on. whoever made this video..I say Bravo. and God Bless U
The place looks like a war zone. The sad thing is that there are a lot of places in this country that are or are getting to be like this. I live in Beverly Hills and even parts of this place are starting to look like shit. This country better wake up fast. George Vreeland Hill
And to think I just took a job there. I have family there and at night it is so dark because even the side streets are not lit! I do what I have to do to make a living? As long, as its honest!
I used to live in Highland Park and I loved it. The beautiful old homes, the close proximity to downtown Detroit and the uptown suburbs. All the major freeways ran through the city making it fast and easy to go anywhere. I was completely blown away by kguyor1's video. My heart sank as what was once the "All American City" to a garbage filled, burnt out mess. How sad.
Highland park was once a nice place to live but now the majority AA's have turned it into a sewer...what does this say about them? other cities are similar....whenever a majority of a certain type are there the city is a bad place to live.
@kguyor1 I liked the video. I would like to see footage of the Highland Park Hospital that burned down. I was born there and given up for adoption 42 years ago. ;) I am heart broken that such a historical place has fallen to ruin. Why so many fires? Was it due to the Race Riots? I am hungry for the history of my birthplace. Thanks.
@kguyor1 Be honest with me. A buddy of mine just moved there and he wants me to come live with him. Is it really that bad? Is it really just cold all the time with gray skies and nothing fun to do?
Are you inspired now to be part of the solution? Many of these building have been demolished with more demolition forthcoming. Hope your next project will showcase some of Highland Park's historic homes in well kept neighborhoods.
its amazing that we got nuff $ 2 send thousands of peep over seas 2 help other countrys when rite here at home we have needs like those of highland park, detroit new orleans. its fucking pathetic of r goverment
Detroit's got nothing on this! I believe that there is only ONE renovated neighbourhood wit "Historical Significance". If not, then I need to go to HP more.
What really fucked up Highland Park is Chrysler pulling it's headquarters out of there. If Chrysler didn't pull out it headquarters Highland Park would perhaps be doing better.
Nice presentation. I created and used to run the HP Block association website ( hpfolks.com ), lived in Highland Park for 30 years, left in '08. As the old matriarchs became inactive from old age or passed away, the last of the social fabric started falling apart. A critical mass of literati and socially active people eventually left, so there was too few people who actively cared enough to maintain the community. I realized that here was no knight in shining armor coming to help - ever.
It has been over 25 years since I last went through Highland Park. This is sad to see but you could see it coming then. This was a city that was the dream of Henry Ford and one can only imagine what he would think if he was alive today. When I last read about it, it was on the verge or in bankruptcy. This looks like there is no tax base left so how does it survive?
The whole Nation needs to pay attention, this could happen in any state. but shame on Mi and our gov for allowing it to remain such a wasteland of so much land. Very sad. Seems all the states should help each other. Very devasting to see our country in such a disgraceful pigsty. What happened, why couldnt the state see it coming, corruption? Greed? Terrible.
what the hell is that firefighter doing at :30 seconds in...thats a major no no..looks like its about to collapse any minute, and is that a RED helmet i see?? captains should know better...
I know man. I haven't heard ONE good thing about Detroit, Highland Park, or Michigan all together for that matter from ANYONE that I've talked to who's lived up there. I'm just tired of working at a fucking sandwich shop and a shoe store for just above minimum wage and all he wants me to do is help him grow weed LEGALLY. Believe me, I know how impossible it is to find a job. I just feel like I don't really have a choice.
Hello's from Sweden. All I knew about Detroit was that it was a grand city comparable to Chicago. Now that I see these videos about Detroit, MI i get a mix of feelings and they aren't good. Mostly I feel sad but also scared actually. I mean wow I didn't know that USA could look like this. I also feel like going there to explore because, well it's also cool to be honest.
Much of the destruction Detroit experienced in the 67 riots wasn't rebuilt. Economy tanked hard when the big 3 were playing catch up to the Japanese car companies. And I suspect arson for profit is the case with many of the home fires (not as much now) since insurance companies just aren't paying out like they use to.
@SomethingAintRight10 - I wasn't blaming the entire white race. I'm white myself, so that would be pretty stupid. I was merely blaming the RACIST white people who left the city. There are plenty of white people still in Detroit. They stayed because they cared enough to ride out the rough times of the late 60's. Not to say things are all better now, but still.
@7vitaman - Maybe black people wouldn't be racist towards white people if they weren't persecuted for centuries. I know it's still doesn't mean you should be called those names. I also get pissed off when I am harassed like that. But you gotta at least understand where this comes from.
wow
Does anyone know where 0:15 was at?
Cool! :)
@BoyScout1960 Absolutely right Boyscout. I remember HP when it was such a beautiful City.
Very sad...
My grandparents were from Highland Park. It was nice at one time. Very sad to see the urabn decay there and in Detroit.

Excellent video. Objective and yet moving. It tells the story of many American cities.
wasthis filmed in America or post war Bosnia?

I became really nostalgic too, so sad!

This isn't just in Detroit. The whole state looks like this. Welcome!
Yes I know same as Hamtramck
That is America's future. Heartbreaking.
I couldn't watch all of this, it's so depressing. Just to see those trashed and burned out ruins, and to know that these were all pretty neighborhoods with nice houses, well kept lawns and most importantly, families and friends, neighbors....

Why does the fire department risk injury by responding to abandoned building fires?
@nwilczyn What was the name of the song? Who was it by? My son actually liked it. :D lol
Lead in the drinking water back in the 1980's
The place looks like a war zone.

I wish you put the street names.
The birth place of the American Wheel.
And to think I just took a job there. I have family there and at night it is so dark because even the side streets are not lit! I do what I have to do to make a living? As long, as its honest!
Will it ever come back ?
all of a sudden my humble neighborhood feels downright luxurious

@bungaloak Do you remember the exact address on Mclean street? Id like to look it up if you dont mind...
Highland park was once a nice place to live but now the majority AA's have turned it into a sewer...what does this say about them? other cities are similar....whenever a majority of a certain type are there the city is a bad place to live.
@CadeMcArtor10 I live up there, and its not bad north of all that shit. The farther north the nicer it gets.
@kguyor1 I liked the video. I would like to see footage of the Highland Park Hospital that burned down. @Orchestra1126 The citizens of Highland Park make the city...
Does anyone still live in highland park? i seen it on gangland i think.
How sad this is!!!
Are you inspired now to be part of the solution? Many of these building have been demolished with more demolition forthcoming. Hope your next project will showcase some of Highland Park's historic homes in well kept neighborhoods.
WHY do so many people see fit to burn perfectly good houses down?
Can't they see, we could fix those up for other people? Lord knows, people need 'em.
its amazing that we got nuff $ 2 send thousands of peep over seas 2 help other countrys when rite here at home we have needs like those of highland park, detroit new orleans. its fucking pathetic of r goverment
A city choked by unions.
Awesome Video! It's really sad to see this! It's also scary because if this happened to a big town like highland park, it can happen anywhere!
The song "what becomes of the broken hearted" comes to mind too, land of broken dreams :-( pray for d-town
Detroit's got nothing on this! I believe that there is only ONE renovated neighbourhood wit "Historical Significance". If not, then I need to go to HP more.
Looks like a good setting for a new Mad Max movie. Bulldoze the place already.

Crazy to see that the website is still up.
LMAO!!! Yeah, ok!

Terrible.
Half of these houses used to be luxurious but now look at them or some still in good condition. How can you become like this highland park!!!!??
what the hell is that firefighter doing at :30 seconds in...thats a major no no..looks like its about to collapse any minute, and is that a RED helmet i see?? captains should know better...

I purchased the house on the right at 5:02 during the past tax auction for 13 dollars.
Not in my western part of the state.

The old houses in the video look like they were once beautiful homes what in the world happened to this city it looks like a war zone
+David Gaddy I grew up in that neighborhood, and yes it was beautiful back in the day.
How did this happen
Much of the destruction Detroit experienced in the 67 riots wasn't rebuilt. Economy tanked hard when the big 3 were playing catch up to the Japanese car companies. And I suspect arson for profit is the case with many of the home fires (not as much now) since insurance companies just aren't paying out like they use to.
I've never been to Detroit the closest I've been is to Chicago I'm going to take a trip to Detroit for the hell of it
Be careful and be ever cognizant of your surroundings while there.

they under our feet lol
Is Highland park mi, part of Detroit city? I Google it and, it gave me Detroit
Highland Park is like an island next to Detroit, but to me, they should call it Detroit because it's so close to it.
thanks for the pix... the song sucks though
dhq2008:
150 Manchester is a vacant lot across the street from an old car assembly plant.
Very sad...... What happened to this once great country of ours???? OBAMA IS NOT THE ANSWER!
THIS is the status quo. Still think we're doing ok?....
How about you make a video of highland park and not show every picture of a bulding thats broke...
You can put the blame on-the-hon-keys!
Really? You literally gave both races slurs.
You DO have a good point, man. Just bad wording?
Inside an ambulance actually. I was a paramedic there.

Because like I said, I wanted to show the DEVASTATION.
@7vitaman - Maybe black people wouldn't be racist towards white people if they weren't persecuted for centuries. I know it's still doesn't mean you should be called those names. I also get pissed off when I am harassed like that. But you gotta at least understand where this comes from.
