  • 2016 World Summer Championships - Men's 10km Sprint Race
    27.08.2016, Otepää
Sprint Gold to Otcenas; Junior Title to Myhda
    Fourth Medal in Three Years
Martin Otcenas of Slovakia won the men’s sprint today at the IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships with a single penalty in 26:14.9. The junior title went to Ukraine’s Anton Myhda, with one penalty in 27:11.9
    Senior Sprint
Silver went to Lukas Kristejn of Czech Republic with two penalties, 34.3 seconds back, while Russia's Sergey Klyachin bought Bronze to his team with one penalty, 38.1 seconds back.
Fourth went to Bulgarian Anton Sinapov, with three penalties 40.8 seconds back, Romania's Gheorghe Pop surprisingly finished fifth, with two penalties, 1:09.2 back, while home favorite Kalev Ermits finished sixth, with three penalties 1:11.6 back. Last year's winner Vladimir Iliev of Bulgaria only had two penalties but finished only 20th, 2:20.2 behind.
    No Clean Shooting
Tricky wind gusts caused many problems for the 56 starters, resulting in no clean shooting. Klyachin, with fast skiing and a clean prone stage was the early leader, and it seemed that even one miss in standing would not prevent him from the win. Otcenas started the competition in the middle of the field, had a single prone penalty, leaving behind the Russian. At each split point Otcenas reduced the gap on the Russian and after cleaning standing he left the stadium as the leader, and crossed the finish line in first. One of the late start numbers 52 Kristejn, also missed a shot in each stage, but his speed on the the tracks put him 4 seconds in front of Klyachin, to the Silver.
    Fourth SBWCH Medal
Otcenas admitted that the conditions at the shooting range were really hard today, "I felt that I would be good at the tracks, so I tried to concentrate on the shooting. It was hard to shoot today and I am glad that I had just one miss." Regarding his fourth summer WCH medal in the past three years he added, "Yes, I manage to show good results at the SBWCH and the summer preparation is really important as well as those results because they show how good the trainings go."
Czech Team Romps in Junior Sprint
The afternoon junior sprint could have been called the "Czech Champs" with the Czech Republic taking places 2-4. Behind the Ukrainian Myhda, the Silver medal went to Ian Burian, with two penalties, 19.8 seconds back, while his teammate Ondrej Hosek claimed Bronze, with two penalties, 49.2 seconds back.
Just off the podium in fourth was their teammate Jakub Prochazka, also with two penalties, 1:04.3 back. Fifth went to Maksym Ivko of Ukraine with four penalties, 1:09.4 back, while Vladislav Miadzuikha of Belarus was sixth, with two penalties, 1:23.2 back.
