Quick Beatmatching - DJing For Dummies

- How to beatmatch REALLY quickly (on vinyl and on CD). Useful when you don't know if your next tune will be faster or slower than the one playing.
This is meant as an 'initial' beatmatch - you'll still need to listen to, and refine the beats during the mix.
I've left the crossfader in the middle, so you can hear both tunes playing. In 'real-DJing' you'd listen to the new tune in your headphones while performing this beatmatch.
Taken from www.recess.co.uk - which is the support site for my book, DJing for Dummies
This video is how i learned to beat match near 15 years ago and since then I've had a great DJ career. Thanks for making this video! :D
It is 2021 and still one of the best beatmatching tutorial!!!
Yes!
omg dj recess i read your djing for dummies aboutr 20 times when i first began djing, your book helped me alot! I still read it sometimes to burn some time
Man, ive read your book like a bible. haha. Im a heavy metal dj so you know its akward. But people go nuts when i whack out crazy prodigy mixes haha. Thank you!
You make it look so easy!
When I was a DJ, the turntables did not have pitch controls. The solution was to shove a match book underneath one of the platters to slow it down!
Yeke Yeke! Took me a long time to find a decent copy of that. And I only wanted it because it was used in the fim the Beach lol, mixes quite well into any set!
THIS WASNT MENTIONED IN THE BOOK!!
The book got me through a rough-rough year man, you got me into this shiz, now im luckily enough doing it on a regular basis and making a name(well..-ish)
Thank you mate!
wow at last. I was looking for your book, djing for dummies for weeks! i asked my relatives to buy me one at perth and yup, bought one today! looking forward to read it! thx also for these videos they really do help!
The label on Yeke Yeke is so beautifully weared at 2:06 :-) I respect Dj Recess much, because I've learned djing thanks to the great information on his site, back in 2003. And it's great to hear a brittish guy speaking understandable english :D
this is why you pay attention in math class you're dealing with bpm beats per minute, this is great!
you're setup is toooo nice.
loving the 1210's levelled into the desk. madness
i just got it yesterday. the trick is also at the pitch range and of course your ear. good mixes usually use a pitch range of +/-6-10%...but to beatmatch some songs u need a wide pitch range..press cue when it goes out of beat, adjust pitch range, and cue again...that way you can get it right, and its a good exercise for your ear to familiarize with beatmatching..ask me any questions or dj recess here, he's really helpful!
That's great technique. I already knew this, but not so quickly, so this has been a help.
thanks recess, your book has been really good knowledge for me! and shout outs to my bud that bought it for me:)
Thanks a lot ... i learned this quick beatmatching for two days......It's great and very quick ..thanks a lot
Couldn't agree more. It's all about being creative. If there's features that allows us to make our life easier and help us become more creative then I don't see why we shouldn't use it.
Its like choosing not to use a oven and cooking using open fire thinking using oven is cheating.
Wow. This is great. Great video and great technique.
just because he diddn't mention.... using headphones to play one song in one ear while you listen to the one outloud with the other makes it alot easier to tell which is faster or slower (just incase you diddn't know) he is right about putting one faster to begin with tho, that can help when learning
I love your book man, keep it up!
I used to watch this video in 2008 so jealous of his set-up, now I've got the same :D roughly...
@Kompoism a difference of 1bpm will never be an issue - what BPM counters sometimes do is they mess up by counting other beats (Fills, off beats, samples etc) as well as the main tempo... so a 160BPM tune becomes say 200+
Since DJ's are DJ's and not always producers they use all kinds of music and sound they like to use, but as they mix they create their own sounds/beats from the music and sounds they are using. But many deejays are also producers who creates tracks, vocals and other sounds and effects to use in their mixes. A good beginner software in producing is FL Studio (Fruity Loops). It works also for professionals. I use it alot.
every DJ should watch this video!!!
Thinking of it too.
Theres a lot involved but you could practice with virtual DJ.
What's interesting is the groves on the record, it makes it easy to locate key places in the song.
Thanks for the advice. This will help me a LOT!
good video cheers,very helpfull
wont forget this in a hurry
awesome tip, never heard of it before now....Thanks
@retrotape99
It's a 7" adapter. It's used for the older 7" vinyls. They aren't worth much, so don't worry about it (unless you have 7" singles lying around somewhere)
Nice tip dude. Imma try that with some DJ friendy toons i got. currently i suck at tempo matching.
awesome dude.... when i got my decks years ago i had no internet and nobody to teach me how to get the beats.... and this was the way i learned myself.... i dont use this technique anymore but id well recommend it to beginners as its just a matter of slowly slowing it down untill you find the perfect speed... good video man glad to see this technique up here :)
wow, this makes things alot easier.
thanks for the tip, i changed it into making the tune slower and then turning the vinyl with my finger and adjusting the speed because my turntable have a really bad torque and tend to stop quickly when i put my finger on the platter
for a cdj-s beatmatching u can only put sa same bpm at both of the songs and u can cue up da song u wanna bring in....is more simple....
very nice ! thank you for this !
@MatrixOfDynamism
beatmatching is getting track (for sample) A to have the same bpm(Beats per minut) as track B
that way you can mix the intro's of tracks better in the outro and its sounds kickass aswell
um. im amazed. thanks for the great tip.
hm lol i remember when i first watched this over 2 years ago and beleave it or not it worked like a charm until i mastered the art alough im still not perfect, thanks man, helped alot, ps yekke yekke is a beltin classic
cool mix...
very help full !!! thanks
thanks for the tip DJRecess
the motor is simply an electromagnet on a ball bearing im sure. thats what it looks like, dont think you can damage it by touching it,, i found my 1210 at the bottom of a pile of old computer equipment all battered and bruised and it still works perfectly
that was insanly quick!!!1
its how i learned... though i was one of few who used this technique, its good for beginners :) then when there ears are trained they can use better methods
@xjuggernaughtx i see you point asking this question, and i think dj Recess answered it right.. however, once you match the beat, you most probably soon (within a minute ?) exchange previous tune with a new one you've just matched anyway..there might not even be time to getting the beat even slightly out during that time... just a thought...
Good tip for beginners.
i love the way you explain it very simple and also extra help for those who already know i would marry you
great technique!
on cdjs it tells you the bpm, so run a 4 beat loop from the song you are mixing in to and just keep speading it up or slowing it down by tapping the side of the platter and that will beat match it
top stuff!! Cheers!
Glassgoww! haha, just got my first records in 23rd precinct before seeing his few days ago!
very nice built in dj booth :d
this really works!! thanks allot !!!!
In "musician" speak...if it is going faster, it is sharp. You then "flatten" or slow down the pitch of the incoming tune.
THANK YOU!
Well another thing u can consider is that House tracks usually run from 125 to 130 so thats a verry small margin.
Also using just your plain old ears works.
I can beet match without having to do all that in a matter of seconds.
Sheesh ive never seen a DJ take the pitch all the way like that.
If your going to teech do it right!!
Interessting. I would have thought such fast beatmachting wouldn't last for the long transitions I like to do (i.e. not just quick blends) but I seems to work out ok (in the video at least).
Gotta try this technique myself...
@extrudatinoal you dont need records or cd's. would be a wise idea to grab some decks and mixer then use the mp3's on your laptop. even though you dont necessarily need them, its good to learn. you can get a program called serato scratch live. great interface.
dude this is goood stuff
playlist? Buy the full length of tracks you like and you're good to go. Beatport, audiojelly and itunes are the top three mp3 shops for me.
yeah realised how stupid that question was just after i sent it...
complements on the book! thought it was excellent!
@djallinlucky you still have to match the beats and key. I have owned both, I agree CDJ's are easier but its not the same as pressing a sync button...
@retrotape99
it's a puck for 7'' vinyl
@DJCKBaltimore He set it at a 10% maximum so its kind of a guess and check technique for 2 tunes with a similar tempo
ye dude you can get beats matched in seconds after how many years of practice?? well wouldnt take years but the piont is that this technique is good for beginners as there ears arent as well trained as experienced djs.... the reason this is good for beginners is because its just a matter of bringing back slowly untill they get it near right :) plus this is dead easy to understand ....
@SuperCanisMajor Thats because Pioneer is very good quality, but also quite expensive.
thx for this trick!
hey john, you remind me of that TV presnter john ...errr leslie. nice professional vid 5*
thats how i beatmatch dude. thought it was the normal way. (NickG)
make more!! :-) i can see this getting alot of views.
change the video title to something that will attract more people its a really good video well taught
the tiger is a hero :D
The CDJ is just on a tv stand, I have the exact same on, but for the mixer and vinyl player I have no idea
NICE table man :)
If you want to play in big venues, when its time switch djs and he is using different equipement or dvs than yours, you still need to beatbatch
No no no you got me wrong. This was a reply to ChrisofTheDestroyer's comment, not a comment on the video! That's why it's a reply, not a standalone comment!
"if this is all djing is" ---> "This is just one method"
"monkey comment" ---> "WMP comment"
See?
Well, obviously. You can't just walk away from the decks, hehe. I usually "ride the pitch" and don't touch the platters at all. Works out fine.
ty for advice!
cool trick, word
@Nagakutebloke Ah didnt know you can turn it off! :) Thx for the info!! :)
holding a record on a beat and droping it is pretty much the same thing. Its still called cueing. Again, I am not saying its easier. Just more efficient.
@Ex0rz Go into the settings and turn the BPM off so you can't see it!
good guide, though personally i would find it a lot less confusing to start slower and increase pitch? maybe its just me
thank god haha i was gonna go crazy too... i mean i suck at doing it now.. but im getting a lot better fast
@DJRecess practice everyday for atleast an hour.
@TranceFawEver goes back to your cue point !
@kingbob182 its not how evry1 beatmatches. most ppl start with pitch on 0 and listen 2 see wether its faster or slower, and move the pitch accordingly
Djing is about selecting the right tunes and moving the crowd I know djs that can beat match and use all the equipment the 'non cheating way' but puts everyone to sleep. At the end of the day its all about what comes out of the speakers and what happens on the dancefloor and that takes good ears!!
@BlinginTom aha. bud theres more to it than "switching songs" thats the basic sayin i guess you could say but a real dj is well rounded, ie scratching, beatmatching, song selection (key, tempo, pitch, vocals, etc)
Its an art really.
Its easy to learn the basics will probably take you a month or two.
But to actually master the art is rarely achieved.
You have a video about building that desk?
nice
I'm a vinyl dj but when I'm on cdj's I sync it. It's not cheating. I drive an automatic car. That's not cheating either.
where did you get the tigger?... lol.. just kiddin.. amazing videos.. greetings from acapulco!
On CDJ's you dont have to do that actually. You can just use the jogwheel to check if the tune is slower or faster. Move it clockwise and counterclockwise if its slower or faster. Then just increase or decrease the pitch accordingly. The first beatmatch was actually terrible since you didnt let the tunes play for even two seconds before you already called them matched :D You should let it play for atleast 30 seconds to know if its matched properly. Tho you can and should always correct it during the mix if you dont have enough time to do a 100% match forehand. Pretty nice tip anyway tho.
That is a turntabel a staton str 8 I think or a technic turntabel and a cdj 900 i think
BEAT MATCHING IS IN THE HEAD
good vid i want to start djing but all i can afford is homemix home dj twin mixer with cdg are they any good or am i wasting my time with d cheap mixers
yeah well it doesn't stays at 170 , standard tracks with 190 , 180 are the songs on my records and as you say its ahrd to recognize when the beats are matched at a high BPM. I already cna beatmix jist some house and stuff without no problems in a couple of seconds but Hardcore with those high BPM speeds are still tricky things for me though i jsut begon with djing with vinyl after messing 2 years around with the Virtual dj program
I am not never set tempo fader to maximun when I beatmatching.
WITH OUT USING SYNG i mean..simple u press cue much times on the beat and u drop it...FOR ALL THE GUYS WHO ARE WATCHING THIS VIDEO.....USING SYNC IS SAME AS SINGING IN ”PLAY-BACK”
Phew!
I thought there was only one specific way to mix in 2 songs.
lmao the tigger on dah turntanble
Tigger says: "NO CHEATING. Do it by ear"
hmm.. can somebody show me a video. because im getting the hang of beatmatching, but then how do people do transitions? like how to fade out and do transitions on songs smoothly. (use trance please)
