the purpose of that little thingy at the back of the tennis shoe is to help you put it on, so instead of puffing your finger inside of the shoe to put it on and hurt your finger you can put it through that loop and hold it like that if that makes sense😹

The loops on shoes are actually for putting the shoe on easier. You hold the loop with your finger and slip your foot in the shoe.
