Lyon, Primatiale Cathédrale Saint Jean

La cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste-et-Saint-Étienne est aussi la pimatiale des Gaules, titre honorifique qui la met au premier rang des cathédrales en France. Elle n’est pourtant pas très grande (80m de long), coincée par la Saône et entourée de la Basilique de Fourvière, des églises Saint-Georges et Saint-Nizier, sa plus grande rivale à Lyon. Gothique, elle a été construite de 1175 à 1480. Elle se mérite, 4 voyages pour la voir en totalité, toute magistralement rénovée, la dernière fois lors de l’ordination épiscopale de Mgr Lagadec. L’intérieur est riche de tableaux, de statues, de vitraux, avec 4 rosaces et un très vieux vitrail de Saint-Pierre daté du tout début du 13ème siècle. Mais, tout cela est moins connu que son horloge astronomique qui date du XIème siècle.

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste-et-Saint-Étienne cathedral is also the pimatiale of Gaul, an honorary title that places it at the top of the cathedrals in France. However, it is not very large (80m long), wedged by the Saône and surrounded by the Basilica of Fourvière, the churches of Saint-Georges and Saint-Nizier, its biggest rival in Lyon. Gothic, it was built from 1175 to 1480. It is worth it, 4 trips to see it in its entirety, all masterfully renovated, the last time during the episcopal ordination of Mgr Lagadec. The interior is rich in paintings, statues, stained glass windows, with 4 rose windows and a very old stained glass window of Saint-Pierre dating from the very beginning of the 13th century. But, all this is less known than its astronomical clock which dates from the 11th century.
