I have always wondered about the scene where Karen decides to hold onto the soil instead of spreading it over Denis' grave. When she walked away in her grief I realized that she was the greatest actress of our generation. For me, it was just as powerful as the "choice" scene in Sophie's Choice.

Excuse me Charles, but with all due respect: Meryl has never, ever been and quite simply, will never EVER be the greatest actress of our generation. Your terribly unfortunate and thoroughly offensive statement reeks of empirical folly of the most artistically absurd puritanism. Meryl is quite definitively, the Absolute, Greatest and Most Wonderfully, Gregariously Divine Actress in the Herstory of our ridiculously troubled planet - generations of every and all kinds be damned! Generations of every and all kinds, of course, are abundantly blessed by the extraordinary, almost supernatural gifts of this undisputed goddess that we are all so luxuriously privileged to have in the midst of us mere mortals. I always - and we should ALL - repeatedly give the most heartfelt thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for creating, loving and saving us but also for gifting us so beautifully with Meryl. May our Most Gracious God always bless you and all of your loved ones Charles 🙏🏾✝️❤️. May God continue to bless Meryl, Don, their gorgeous children and all of their loved ones 🙏🏾✝️❤️. May God continue to bless us all 🙏🏾✝️❤️ Amen

The late Sydney Pollack was not averse to appearing in his own films.
    'Tootsie' was a true masterpiece!
Sydney was great both in front of and behind the camera.
He gave a great performance in Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut'!

I recently discovered a British TV series called The Flame Trees of Thika, about a woman who goes to British East Africa in 1913 to start a coffee plantation. The novel was written Elspeth Huxley and strangely, contains many similar characters, some with identical names like Juma. The novel on which the series is based was published in 1959, though Huxley's first writing about Kenya and a so-called Lord Delamere was in 1935. Karen Blixen published Out of Africa in 1937. Both authors are cross-referenced in Wikipedia. One has to wonder about the similarities in Huxley's work since Blixen published her work first. Oh, BTW, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. It got me thinking about going to Nairobi and visiting the Blixen Museum. But thanks to Google Earth and COVID-19, I've changed my mind.

The little scene they show here with the lioness having Streep's character at a disadvantage, near the tree, is a microcosm of that character's interplay and attempts to corral, tame Redford's character throughout the film.
Every line of his fails to fall in line with what her wishes are. After he tells her, "I wouldn't run...(good line for a hunter to say, to his female interest)...she will think you are something good to eat".
    "Do you have a gun?"
"She won't like the smell of you"
    "Shoot--shoot it".
    "She's had breakfast".
    "Eh, eh..don'...please, shoot her".
"Nnno, let's give her a moment" (I almost laughed here).
"Oh, my God, shoot her!" (Lioness leaves, finally)
"Just how much closer were did you expect to let her COME?"
    "A bit".
(Then) "She wanted to see if you'd run, that's how they decide--a lot like people, that way".
While he was all about fairness and respect, for a hunter, it was also something he both observed about humans and as a bonus got to see about her, her mettle, to me, anyway.
At one point while courting, she asks him doesn't it matter to him about something, maybe her being another man's wife or something entirely different, but he replies "No, it matters to me that you try".
First view of this film I rather disliked her character, but I cannot let it pass if it comes on and I am alone, without anyone to disturb the beauty of the story, of Africa, the music. ***SPOILER ALERT********************************************************************Her reading the poem brings tears every time, unable to let go the earth.

Streep's wardrobe in OOF was certainly a boost for a little chain of stores at the time called "Banana Republic". Before it was bought out, BR sold clothes that made Americans look like they were going on Safari. I remember going into one of their first stores and there was straw on the floor and some sort of eau d'elephant scent, lol! Now it's just a more expensive Gap....

Ms. Streep DID NOT work on set with the lions. When the lions were present for filming, Meryl was not scheduled until a week later. The lions were trained by my decades-long friend, Hubert Wells, and Meryl was doubled in all lion scenes by another long-time friend, Doree Sitterley, a co-trainer with Wells. But Ms. Streep the movie star does not mind claiming credit for working with the lions when she was not there at all.

Directors sometimes risk their actors' lives for their art. Example: John Landis/the Twilight Zone movie/Rick Morrow and 2 Vietnamese children killed by a copter blade. Of course Landis was actually breaking the law by having the kids work at nite and for other violations and got sued for it. Almost got sent to prison for it.

I remember seeing this film when it first was released. I thought it was basically a sappy love story then and I still think it is now. Although I like Meryl Streep and I like Robert Redford, they were completely mismatched in this film and there was no chemistry between them. It was like watching two manikins going through the motions of pretending to be lovers. A highly over-rated film in my opinion.

They could never achieve any reality in the danish & british society of the early 20th century. The film remains hollywood-sh.t.

"Africa is not a country..." He shouldn't have continued that sentence.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that. Embarrassing.

Stupid movie. Better read the book, Out of Africa. Blixen is a great writer.

The book and the movie are the best companion set I've ever seen. The book is about the internal life and thoughts of a woman living in Africa, while the movie is about her and the people she knew. || I was actually reading the book when I saw the ad for the movie. For the first twenty minutes I was thrown off - until I realized how well they complimented each other. AND Streep was *exactly* the way I envisioned Blixen. Better to read the book & watch the movie.
