We love our bucket compost toilet that we’ve been using for three years now. For the substrate, I just take a large trash can to the local sawmill and they let me fill it with sawdust for no charge and it breaks down better than anything else we’ve tried 🙌
I have used a Loveable Loo with the 5 gallon buckets for 10 years. Collect bags of shredded leaves in the fall for both the outhouse 5 gallon bucket and pallet compost bin(s). Fantastic system!. And use the 2 year old compost in my garden. But only use those veggies myself or with friends who understand, and are okay with, the system. I have a feminine funnel in an old gallon milk jug for pee (don’t have to go outside for that! Call it my second bathroom. Lol.) At night it lives RIGHT beside the bed. And finally. A piece of camping pad foam with a circle cut out to insulate my butt from the freezing toilet seat. Even at 11 below (F) the seat is warmer than most flush toilets I use when away from home. Zero problems. Nice closed system. Food - poop - food. Also. Can put ANYTHING in my compost pile. Meat, bones, cheese, dairy. All breaks down.
We have an off grid outhouse, and for years we've used a piece of foam with a hole cut out to make the stay more comfortable. Warm tushy even in sub zero degrees, I promise.
I lived off grid for about 10 years and I used a removable toilet seat that I brought in and hung behind the Woodstove to keep it warm until we had to take it outside to use it lol
I have not commented in a while, but Barron's comment on the relief bucket, was way tooo funny! And Elsa, just can't contain herself.... I love you two!
OMG you guys are so hillarious!! Pilot is soooo cute with those goofy ears. And Kamp ... poor guy. He was so used to being the princess of all. He's being amazingly good. Thanks so much for posting. Everyone else has been on a break and I really needed this!!!
Oop! Looks like the tables have turned for Kamp! Pilot is holding her own, wrestling with him! The place looks good! I wait eagerly for new videos, and this made my morning! Lol at Barron with his alliteration on the dookie box! Have a great week! Looking into those eyes! She has so much love in those eyes! My heart melts!
My brother made a camping pooper (which they still use) out of a folding camp chair with the bottom busted out, a toilet ring and a bucket. He made an enclosure outside by his workshop for the thing so he could "go" while out there working too. lol. It ... has ... (i crack up thinking about this every time) ... cup holders for his beer, lol.
Lots of good things, but the most adorable is your new dog...Shane is just like my adorable Kika ... 6 years without her 😔 I had her since she was 3 months old and 12 when she left...always around and my loving companion ❤
Poo with a view! I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains with no running water, indoor plumbing, central heat. We had a two seater outhouse. It was definitely cold in the winter although more protected from the wind than yours. I liked it though, great view from ours too. Fun video, I love seeing Kamp and Pilot interact. Thanks.
My husband and I had a composting toilet for about a year whilst we were renovating our property. It was a great system and really easy to set up and maintain. It wasn’t the poop that was a problem but the urine was smelly and made it messier to dispose of. We did the simple bucket system with no separation but if I had to do it again I would work out a separation system for solids and liquid. That being said it was a lot easier to setup and use than I would have thought prior to using one. The puppy is good for Camp she really is bringing out his doggy side love the way he trots down the road like he owns it very cute 🥰
I love the shoes, Barron, it's nice to treat yourselves a little. You deserve it. You guys are doing great. The build's coming along so beautifully. God bless ya'll. 👏
All those reasons you cited for a no on the Nature's Head are why I have simple poop bucket toilet in my converted cargo trailer. I used pelletized bedding as the medium (cheap, no smell, easy to come by when repurchasing needs arise), and I can just take my biodegradable bag and toss it in the trash. Easy, mess free, perfect. And it all cost me a total of $40 to create.
Can the pelletized bedding be used in compost? What happens once full? :) Sounds like it could be a good system! Just bought land and absolutely do not want septic, the thought of installing a privvy outhouse gives me a headache from upfront build cost and emptying costs.
@@shannon4991 I think it probably could? But there may be rules around allowing the human waste to decompose. I'd do some google searches on that part. The pelletized bedding itself I think would be fine for compost. I get mine at Tractor Supply so they may know, too.
Darn that pup has ears like antennas 😄 and it's great to see the friendship developping between your two dogs , love you guys and your values and love your videos , have a great wonderful new year ! 🧡💚💜✌😚
A couple of questions: 1. Could you have a "regular" septic system if you so desired? That way the potty could be inside?? 2. Do you plan to have some kind of enclosure around the toilet? Guests might like a little privacy?? I love how the dogs are getting along better and they both seem so happy. A very happy New Year to all of you!!
Pilot & the window 😅 - I couldn’t believe it as well, had to rewind it! She didn’t even look fazed, such a cutie! Wonderful update & again, thank you for sharing your experiences with all of us ♥️
I'm so glad to see an honest review of compostable toilets, it's all marketing fluff. We went with a diverter and bucket when building our tiny house. Love the "system" and we have no black tank to dump, win/win. Thanks guys and I hope that you are having a wonderful winter, thanks for the vids!
Lots of cool things going on in this video. The tank monitor, Barron’s new Vivo shoes & a new potty. Never thought those nature’s head were all they were cracked up to be. Glad you built your own biffy. Exactly what I want to do one day. Wishing you, Barron, Kamp, & Pilot a very Happy New Year ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I totally seen that coming with Pilot, you could tell she thought she was shut out but got sidetracked, forgot about it and then jumped at the window. What a beautiful mountain you went snowboarding on. I like what you said Elsa about toughening up with going outside to go to the washroom, but it totally would strengthen you with the exposure to the cold. Loved your jumps 😂
Super interested to hear how the toilet goes. We started a compost toilet system using 5 gallon buckets in August. Two adults full about 3-4 buckets a week. Sawdust for substrate. Working well (and when others have $12,000+ septic issues I breathe easy) but still have kinks to work out. Excited to hear how yours goes.
You have no idea the joy I get watching Kamp and Pilot since losing my beloved pup! I will rescue another pup in the spring (I have two artificial knees and need a new hip; I also have scoliosis so walking on ice and snow is too dangerous right now). Barron, you crack me up!
i highly recommend a smaller bucket (i use a 3 gallon bucket and i can carry it very easily) and a pile that is fenced from dogs and wildlife, the garbage can will be very heavy and hard to "set aside", and might bust from the weight on the sides of the can. it will also fill up quickly and you will likely fill more than one of these per year with two+ people. also, peat is not a renewable resource, whereas wood shavings are highly available near anyone who cuts wood. i've never used peat but the composting effectiveness of using shavings is great. composting requires water, air flow, and carbon to effectively compost humanure. check out the humanure handbook! it's worth a read
also, in cold places, if your shit starts freezing in the bucket you might appreciate my personal preference, to dig a hole in the ground, put the bucket inside the hole, and cleverly disguise it with a scrap piece of plywood on top. it's hidden, it's a squatty potty, and it will never freeze.
I keep laughing how much our lives mimick each other. We sold our old life (tech company owners in Portland, property, equipment, cars, toys, designer stuff), moved onto the road as nomads for a few, found cheap arid property (we're in Montana), drilled a well, installed a solar array (batteries and tank are in a 10' deep pit where it stays a constant 58, even when it's -42 outside), built our offgrid home ourselves...with help from the local Amish. Been telling our furry old man he's getting a puppy friend soon. What are we doing next? ♥️
I'm glad to see Kamp and Pilot playing better now. That was hysterical to see Kamp wait for Pilot to get up from his chair and then walk over and get in it. Hahahhahahhahaha!
Pilot has grown so much, I love how her ears touch looks so cute. Kamp is so funny he's strutting around even more now. Beautiful place to go to toilet, really honest review on your first one. Hope you had a good christmas and happy new year xx
I usually watch your videos when I’m munching on something, but i decided against it when I saw the title talking about toilets 🤣🤣 anyways just remembered to watch it , and it was very informative!
We had two NaturesHeads on our catamaran and then one in our Rpod. It was a fight… we now have a ThinkTank toilet in our Imagine and after a bit of a learning curve are happy with it.
Well thanks to you I won't waste money on a nature's head toilet. I will try the new one you made. The puppies are so adorable. Thanks for sharing your life with me.
Loved your video and your review, we’ve had our natures head 2 years now and I gotta say it’s still my fav thing in the van. Also Ty for all the puppy footage! ❤ much love

I'm so sorry but Pilot running into the window was so funny. I instantly felt bad for her but she looked so confused. Lol

“It’s like an Outhouse, but without walls or ceiling.”

The turd tumbler subject....all of it had me cracking up! 🤣
Barron had me laughing about that toilet! Both dogs are adorable. I loved watching you guys boarding on the ice. Great video
So much good puppy content, you’ve BLESSED us. Every pup needs to run into glass once to learn that it’s solid.
A video from Elsea always makes my day! Peace to all who gather here ♥️
Aye Aye!
Amen, and too you as well
You as well🥰
Pilot trying to jump through the window was sad but so cute....
This video had it all, new toilet, snowboarding, dog training, throat singing, window crashes, etc., etc. Thanks for sharing.
I love the word Crapper, It just flows
I am so happy Kanp and Pilot get along.
The first honest review of the nature's head toilet

Dookie bucket....turd tumbler 😂🤣😂🤣💩💩💩I literally just woke up, starting watching this and now I can't quit laughing!! Love it!
Loving seeing Pilot grow. Her and Kamp are just so cute.
Don’t feel bad, Pilot…we all have run into a glass door a time or two. 😂
They do love each other and he sure is getting big
Pilot has the most perfect ears for a puppy GS 💕

Rather brutal assessment of the expensive toilet I am glad as one can make the same for 1 000 x less!
“ I thought you were talking to me “, lol . Great video, very peaceful but active vibe. Love the new crapper 💛
