Another great video Rafael! Coming from a photography background the approach to colour work is slightly different, so having this explained in such a simple way is really helpful. I would love to see a follow on video showing a creative use of colour. Hope you are keeping safe and well 👊🏼
Totally agree! The Photography and Video sides of colouring feel like they come from different angles but arrive at the same place, I actually would love some of the color tools be present on the Photo side, Especially for checking skin tones. I always feel like I am guessing. Thanks for the comment Edward!
The thing is that after you balanced whites and blacks on your first shot and went for the skintones correction with the offset wheel you shifted all your neutrals as well as overall balance to the magenta :) So it is necessary to balance whites and blacks again
You are 100 right, that is why I made a part 2 where I go over more advanced steps that correct that. This was more of a intro to working with C-Log - Though the follow up was in FCPx, I haven't made one for DR yet. Thanks for watching and the comment!
Thank you Raphael! Learned a lot from both video's (this one and your 'best C-log settings for EOS R). Am a novice in filming with the EOS R and feel more equipped now to create better colors for my video's :-) I have immediately subscribed to your channel and look forward to more content. Keep up the good work!
8:12 - the vectorscope indicates that the cyan and blue are shifted. The hue needs to be adjusted, otherwise the magenta and red will dominate the highlights and it will have that tint as shown in the footage.
You are right, this video was aimed for people that are just getting into grading footage. I made a follow up video that went into secondary color corrections with Advanced Color Grading in Final Cut Pro (Built-in Tools & Color Finale 2) ua-cam.com/video/VDYmwNiHO_k/v-deo.html Thanks for watching and the comment!
By far the simplest correction video I’ve seen so far. Now if only my computer would run more than 30 seconds without the damned “GPU is full” warning 😵
I got to thinking, would 4K IBP maybe be a work-around? I noticed that my EOS R spits out roughly the same file sizes at 4K IPB and 1080 ALLi, and the computer can handle the 1080 no problem. I wonder if it’s just the massive 4K ALLi that’s making it spaz out? Gonna do some testing!
When I drop my 4k canon C-log clips in to the D Resolve 17, it only display the sounds with no images. Please help me how to fix the problems. Thanks in advance
I was following you until you worked on the girl's face with the power window and went up to the color node and said "deselect" (10:20) but didn't show how you did that. So here I am trying to get the whole clip to show the new skin adjustment and stuck with just the part of the face that had the power window on it. Thanks for the video but I wish you could slow down in some of those parts.
Sorry for not being clear, press shift h to select and deselect the qualifier. Definitely need to work on my pacing! Thanks for watching and the comment!
I have no idea why so many content providers spend the first 3 to 4 minutes of their presentations trying to convince the people who are watching their video to watch their video.
I tried it but didn't work for me. The skin selection goes off the skin when the subject moves. It's not trackable and you didnt show that. Am I doing something wrong?
Yeah you are correct, I didn't get into the advance grading in this video. There is a way to do secondary with qualifiers, mattes and tracks. For all things Davinci make sure you check out Casey Faris ua-cam.com/users/CaseyFaris777 or Waqas Qazi ua-cam.com/channels/Z_4tLOd-iu4zBDApQsZZTw.html Both are great! Thanks for watching and the comment Sammy!
When you're doing the skin tones you say you want to keep them between 40 and 70 but I don't see those numbers on the scale on the left. Can you explain. Have subscribed because like others here have said, your explanations are very clear and easy to follow
Hi John, just seeing this now, you are correct, Davinci works in 16bit color space and so the numbers on are a different scale. but it's roughly the same on a scale of 0-100 it's 40-70 on a scale of 0-1024 it's roughly 400 to 700. That's why in the video I said 40-70% - Let me know if this clears it up!
This is good question! (if I understand it correctly) Both Adobe Premiere and FCPX work on a “what you see is what you get” philosophy. If your interface display is calibrated and using the proper ICC profile, you shouldn’t have to touch anything, ever. It just works. But this assumes that you are working with a DCI/P3 display, if not then it's a bit of a guessing game. I will have to look into it further to see if there is a way to tone map Dci/p3 on a Rec709 or RGBs display.
When I bring my highlighted skin tone down so it's between 40-70% on the waveform, it's bringing down the overall highlights back down which we dragged up in the first step. I must be missing something?
You are 100% right Paul. The fact that you are noticing it means you well beyond the skill level that this Tutorial is able to provide. I left out secondary color correcting when it's just about isolating the skin tones and ignoring all other colors, I found it was a big confusion point for many, I did a follow up in Final cut pro and in Premiere pro but not one for Davinci resolve. But this is a great resource for your to walk you thought secondary color correction that will resolve the issue of adjusting the other highlight colors. artlist.io/blog/getting-started-with-secondary-color-correction-in-davinci-resolve-why-its-a-powerful-storytelling-tool/ Thanks for watching and the question Paul!
@@RafaelLudwig oh that's good to hear! This is a great tutorial now I feel like I can color correct properly inside of going back n forth moving sliders not really knowing the proper way, just hoping for the best haha. Thanks for your reply!
Hi Rafael, I'm wondering what is the shortcut to create a new node? I cannot find the same function to create a new node same as the previous one's as you did in the video. Thanks
I am not shooting LOG as I am using a Canon 5Dmk3, what picture style set-up would you recommend based on the limitation of the bit colour? I have used Cinestyle but getting back to a good image has proved difficult. I can see that your method in this video will correct practically everything and as a stills photographer is far more understandable than using LUTs
Hi Rafael thanks for your lessons and important tips on your channel. See if you can answer a question for me: I use a Fujifim XT4 camera and there is no source list Davinci's Gamma Solves the 4 logs that a fujifilm makes available on its website. Is it possible to include them, and how to do it? Thank you Mauricio
So I did some video outside with my google pexal 4 and the mcpro24fps app. The color profile I used was called mS-log3. I do not no the difference between S-log, C-log, M - log. etc. Does that really matter and I need to shoot a different type of log profile or should this work with any Log type.
This should work with most log profile - which is essentially a flat color profile. Once you have it roughly balanced using the scopes you should be able to grade it to your liking. Thanks for watching and the comment Howard!
@@RafaelLudwig So this only work on a couple of the test clips I did. I think I my phone camera doesn't know how to expose for Log video on auto mode and neither do I on manual. So I'll try to find videos on what I need to do to expose correctly. Thanks a bunch
@@howardmcmillian5764 Thanks for doing a follow up! Yeah having the footage exposed properly definitely helps with the base grade. Very good video and straight to the point! I learned a few things about making my own lut. I thought about it but was not sure that it would be that simple. I shall make some own luts for EOS R : ) Great tip on the skin tone. Question; what is it about Canons own luts for EOS R that are so exact or not? When I apply them the footage get very over exposed of course after taking it down it looks good, I don't understand why they made it so. I find that most luts crush the blacks so making my own is a good way to get it as I want. Would you like to share your color settings for the project; input, timeline and export? I never managed to get Resolve videos to get the same look after export as on the timeline so I worked it out backwards and simply made a lut to apply for the timeline just before export to look good on Safari and Chrome. How do the movie production companies do to get the colors look so good on all three; Safari, Crome and Firefox?
This is the exact reason I made this video, I got frustrated trying to use the Canon Provided Luts. It is not clear which one is best suited for the EOSR and the manual that is provided isn't very useful. So I went on a hunt to figure out how to best use the C-Log footage. I was determined to use C-Log because it gives a few more stops of dynamic range and one never knows if shooting conditions will ideal when you are in a run and gun situation. I was very comfortable exposing for the C200, but those techniques did not translate to the EOS R so I spent a few days testing to see what works best for the EOS R. Then I had to learn how to grade that footage to maximize the quality. Our studio monitors have always been color calibrated to match from screen to screen to screen, but I understand the issue you are referring to - And quicktime on the mac is notorious for color and gamut shifting after export - check out this video that may help explain and resolve your issue. ua-cam.com/video/YwjLuUR51gE/v-deo.html
