Ex Nottingham Forest keeper Lee Camp reveals all on turbulent City Ground career

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2022
- Lee Camp gives a real insight into his time at Nottingham Forest. He became an instant fans favourite, as he saved a penalty at Derby only four games into his Forest career. Camp went on to help the club reach the Championship play-offs in two successive seasons, under Billy Davies - before playing under Steve McClaren, Steve Cotterill, Sean O’Driscoll and Alex McLeish.

Great insight into how Lee's experience was. Seemed like he truly, truly cared for the club throughout his time.
Thanks Oliver, glad you enjoyed it. Don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see past and future videos pop up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers.
@@SportChippers already done. He also has a ridiculous memory.
Subscribed, thanks chipper, these interviews are refreshing, to say the least!!
I loved this interview. Lee was a great Forest keeper who brought me a lot of pleasure with his on-pitch displays. He made a good point about players just being let go, I could never understand that. And Forest over the years have got so, so close to promotion but always do something silly like letting people go, not investing at the right times etc. They also went through years of spending stupidly big on certain individuals (but not the rest of the team). Steve Cooper is the first Forest manager that has been younger than me, but he's doing a fantastic job. Up the Forest!
Glad you liked it Chock… plenty to talk about eh, after listening to Campy!
Superb. Always loved his passion for the game and you can still feel it right the way through this interview. What a top bloke.
LEE CAMP IS A FOREST FAN!
Glad you liked is Hubert… . don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see more videos (past and future) come up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers!
He is an absolute top bloke. Met him back in 2010 at the football league awards. Chatted about Forest, we was convinced we would go up that season.
Cheers Stuart, glad you enjoyed it. Don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see past and future videos pop up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers.
Between 2008 to 2011 he was unbelievable
Great perspective on the play offs and what went wrong. Actually a really great team and deserved more. Destabilising the team at the wrong time was the problem. Great goalkeeper, prem quality. Very revealing re Steve MClaren, seemed he wanted to degrade and humilate the team..no wonder he got zero respect. Steve Cooper reminds me of Billy Davies..he's got the players proud to be playing for Forest. Sounds like he left his heart at Forest, top man
Thanks Shepton… don’t forget to subscribe for free to see more videos, past and future. Cheers!
Quite a eye opener, Lee is very candid of his time at Forest, it's not surprising we didn't move forward, let's hope all that is behind us now, thanks Lee for your passion to play for Forest.
Cheers Barry… don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see more videos pop up on your UA-cam feed. Cheers!
Great interview, loved Campy at Forest. Remember when he came in to replace Paul Smith who was a good shot stopper but lacked in other areas, then Lee walked in and the difference was night and day
Thanks Ben, glad you enjoyed it.. . don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see more videos (past and future) come up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers!
Looking forward to this, loved camp at forest
Nice one Tyler… I think every Forest fan will want to see this, he’s very very open and candid about his time at the club. Don’t forget to subscribe for free btw…. you’ll see all the videos on your feed, both past and future… cheers!
Probably my favourite of the interviews you’ve done, Chippers. Camp was a top, top ‘keeper: one of the best Forest has had, certainly since the Premier League days. He comes across as so passionate, possibly a bit of a challenge to manage, but only in the sense that he’s clearly got a winner’s mentality, has high standards and is not afraid to speak his mind. The best managers would see these as positive attributes and harness the drive to achieve that’s there in a sportsman like this. I remember feeling quite sympathetic to the club hierarchy during the Billy MK1 years and the McClaren weeks, because it seemed obvious to me that Billy was a nightmare manipulator, interested in advancing his own agenda (as was shown in his second spell), and McClaren also seemed to have no appreciation for the financial realities of the Championship. Doughty bankrolled the club and I thought he and Arthur wanted to avoid another post-Platt financial meltdown scenario. But when you listen to the likes of Camp and Anderson and how strong the belief was in that team in January 2010, it seems clearer than ever that the failure to invest at that point (Shorey etc) was a pivotal moment and squandered the best chance of getting the club back into the big time. The McClaren appointment was very flawed - no real thinking about the transition from one style to another - and Lee’s comments add to the sense of multiple communication failures at that point, between club and manager and club and players. Lee is refreshingly candid: he comes across as so invested in what was building under Billy, his take on Beswick’s methods is hilarious, and I left this thinking his insight is probably quite an accurate take on the mistakes in this period. Then after the tragedy of Doughty’s passing we get into the incompetence of the Al Hasawi period and what is probably the third big mistake of the post-PL period (after the breakup of the Hart team and the failure to invest in Jan 2010), which is the incomprehensible sacking of O’Driscoll, a man right for the time and for Forest’s best traditions. So frustrating to think about this time, which as you say to Lee is one of incredible emotional highs and lows in just a four-year spell. I think these interviews are great insight for supporters and contain valuable material for anyone crazy enough to consider writing an unofficial club history. It also makes me think how lucky, rare and (pessimism taking over) probably fleeting the kind of unity we have at the moment is. Sorry for the long comment, but there was a lot in this one that was thought-provoking. Thanks again for what you’re doing with these videos. U REDS!
Thanks Andrew… I don’t mind long comments at all! Glad you enjoyed it…
Absolute hero of mine during his Forest days and such a passionate guy who truly understood the fans and what it meant to play for our club.
I'd welcome him back now to Forest even if as a back up to Samba.
Cheers Danny, glad you enjoyed!
What a Quality Interview. Love how you just let people speak Chippers. And Lee Camp, thank you for all you put in to the Club. Always remembered very fondly as a solid, stand up guy and a talented keeper. Thanks Lee - and Thanks for your love for us. You Reds! If you ever come to Bratislava, Beers are on me!
Thanks Dan, glad you liked it! Always think people want to hear what a guest has to say, not me… in the words of Larry King, “I never learned anything while I was talking…!”
@@SportChippers What better mentor could journo have?
Brilliant video Chippers, I've subscribed. Always loved Lee Camp always wore his heart on his sleeve and gave his all for the club. He'll always be a Red in my eyes and be welcome on Trentside.

One of the top keepers we’ve had over the years and yet another player being honest to what was going off behind the scenes and saying what we the fans were saying what was happening at the club at the time. Another great interview chippers, I thought an hour was going to be a bit long but in the end I could have listened to 2 hours of Lee talking.👏👏👏
And that was the shorter version!! There’s a bit more available if you’re a gold/silver member!
Unreal interview again, the way lee camp speaks and tells a story is so intriguing. Keep them coming!
Will do, and thank you. Don’t forget to subscribe for free, to see past and future videos on your feed - cheers!
Great interview! I remember an interview that Bill Beswick gave, during his time at Forest, talking about the Forest players and remember thinking “I hope none of the players hear this!”, so it’s fascinating to hear Lee talk about that.
Yeah I thought that too… not heard detail about that aspect of it all. Don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see past and future interviews come up on your UA-cam feed. Cheers!
I thought the exact same at the time. I immediately thought he was a dick, I can only imagine what the players thought
Letting the fa Cup comment slide, he must have meant the league Cup wins, very good keeper for us, nice to hear from him , very much wanted him to do so much more for us !!
I think he meant FA Cup Finals, rather than winning it… that’s what I thought anyway…
Good interview chippers, camp was so open and said so many interesting things to say.
Glad you enjoyed it… Don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see past and future videos pop up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers.
I can remember being at the Derby game when Barazite was preparing to take the penalty. There was never a doubt that Campy wasn’t saving that Pen. I remember saying to the few around me “ he’s saving this”.. great to hear his fondness still about the club!
Ha ha… I wish I had your confidence at that point… . don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see more videos (past and future) come up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers!
Another great interview Chippers!
He was a great keeper for us (probably at that time best keeper in the league:) I often wondered as to why he never played for a bigger club after leaving us, it was nice to hear him say he'd lost his spark - well not nice to hear but an honest assessment by himself as I thought he'd go onto be keeper in the Premier League and play regularly.
Cheers Chris, glad you enjoyed it!
Another Super interview Robin. Thank you Lee for your time at our club and the full commitment you gave to us over the seasons .
Cheers Steve!
Big thanks to Lee Camp for sharing this . Always said there was more going on behind closed doors than we the fans were privy to .
Thanks Chippers xx
Pleasure Anne, glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic interview. Many of the points he makes we’ve heard from other interviews (sportchippers) ie S’OD and Robbie et al but this has been the clearest outline of how those great days and terrible days came about. I liked Lee from the moment he arrived but this interview has magnified my respect for him. I can see him forging some kind of job in management. Thanks chippers.
Glad you liked it Malcolm… don’t forget to subscribe for free to see more past and future interviews come up on your UA-cam feed. Cheers!
Wonderful interview with a wonderful guy, and one I'll always think on with tremendous fondness. I'll never forget the roar that went up on his debut when after about 5 minutes he came for a cross (one of the things Smith had been criticised for not doing enough of), and was so commanding taking it under pressure, treating the attackers like inflatables to be knocked out the way. It wasn't mentioned but when he went back to QPR after the initial loan one of only a couple of games he played for them was back at the City Ground. QPR won the toss and swapped the team round, and Camp got the most tremendous ovation from all sides and then the Trent End as he approached it. You could tell he was really touched. Then I hear this and it was really very moving at times. Yet another that makes me so sad we didn't just back Billy, both a little in the transfer markets, and by not insanely sacking him twice. We'd for certain be in a better place than we are now (though at least for once we've a manager that doesn't make me pine for Billy's return).
Oh, and as ever, that's not to say I don't believe or understand how much of a git Billy was to you guys on his return. I can only reiterate that your coverage was as brilliant as always in those years, because what made it brilliant was you guys.
Very kind John, thank you. It was really not fun covering that second spell, but we did the best we could….
the 2009 - 10 season he was in the conversation for an England call up. No, really he was! He want on a bonkers streak of clean sheets. I remember we had Brum in the cup in the January of that season (my bday weekend) and they were the in form team in PL and we were in the in form team in the CHAMP, a real juicy tie. Obviously it ended in a stalemate. I remember the penalty save vividly, it was a big weekend of sport for me. Lewis Hamilton won his first world championship, and then this match. I am not ashamed to say I was rather hyped up on a few too many beers ha ha!
I agree. I think Camp was being a bit modest about this. He was outstanding in that run and it wouldn’t be such a big jump to pick a top goalkeeper in the Championship at a point when there were not a lot of English goalkeepers in the Prem. Think Steve Bull etc in the past. Ruddy was a good goalie, but I don’t think he was better than Camp when in top form.
So many great memories Neil, glad you enjoyed the video. Don’t forget to subscribe for free, and you’ll see past and future videos pop up on your UA-cam feed… Cheers.
Campy on that stretch was unbelievable. I remember him having amazing games week in, week out. Not signing Shorey was fatal.
Really good keeper, shame we didn't get promotion when he was with us. With hindsight Davies' reign was bound to end in tears, total opposite mentality to Cooper.
That’s a very good point….
Good interview that, Lee camp as always been one of my favourites!!
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers Adrian!
I couldn’t agree more about McLaren. At the time I said to others that he didn’t want to be there, was only coz he didn’t get the Villa job that he was even in line but to sack a manager who’d got your club to successive players offs was arguably the Biggest mistake in our post Clough era.
Err it's you again, the bloke who has no clue

my fave lee camp moment was forest v plymoth last home game of 2010 season. he juggled the ball like 3 times on his head then caught it. also tysons boot flew off almost reached the halfway line. it was my first forest match i went to. trent end t10 section

Great interview Chippers! Would be interested to see an interview with Paul Taylor - he on your list?
The Athletic’s Paul Taylor? Can’t believe I used the word “athletic” and “Paul Taylor” in the same sentence!! I’ll add him to the list…
Every player has good things to say about Billy it seems, it just makes me wonder why he's never had another job in football since Forest. 🤔
Allegedly to do with Brown Envelopes
@@danhawkins77 I heard about that but there's loads of managers who've taken "brown envelopes" that have continued to work in football. Maybe from a different era though.
He got a £4+ million pay-off from a few months work at Forest (1 mil a year) so I'm not sure he needed to
Another great interview 👏 Camp's a top bloke too.

He was a great GK for us at the time and he is spot on about the missed chance of promotion due to ND not getting a couple in at Jan. The appointment of McClaren was an utter joke.

Great interview and insight. Said it before and i'll say it again, Julian Bennett was the missing piece of that teams puzzle.

Great interview. Although how depressing was it to go back over the McLaren saga again? 😂
Everything from then, until pretty much Karanka, was depressing and awful. Certainly every season until now was a complete let down.
And it's no surprise really, given how badly the club has been run.
Yeah I thought it was really interesting… a player laying it all out like that. Fascinating. Thanks Senor!
Always felt safe with Camp in the net. Swear he caught every corner

Great player. Always gave his all for Forest, and was always appreciated by the fans.
Wheels came off when they brought in Mclaren. The team just disintegrated.
All that momentum under Billy just evaporated.

I thought the same and was looking for comments on it
He was a great keeper for us and he did deserve England selection with the form he was in at the time and it was a huge mistake to get rid of him
Great keeper but i remember when Swansea wanted to sign him , who was in the prem at the time , he wanted to leave , we would not let him leave and he went downhill from there and it seamed he lost all interest . We had to get rid and it was the right choice
@ Did he want to leave? He didn’t say so. He just said there was no communication
@@pearcegreatesteverleftback03 Yes he did , he wanted to play in the Prem , who can fault him, we wouldnt let him he then spat his dummy out . We should have let him leave , its never good keeping players who dont want to be there
@ Think you need to listen to it again. Not once does Camp say “I wanted to leave Forest”
@@pearcegreatesteverleftback03 Im not on about what he says now mate , i remember it well from back then. He wanted to play in the Prem and spat his dummy out when he didnt get what he wanted. period.
Grown up with forest winning FA cups.....I very much doubt that !
I think he meant Finals…!
