It might still be an effective way. Most of the people that might be recording you are not FBI agents or something, so they probably make pretty basic mistakes.
You can use your cell phone camera. Leave it on and look at your screen. Turn off lights in the room leaving the smallest amount possible to see. If you come within 10 feet or so... give or take, and your phone is pointed at a lens of many of the available cameras, even the small tiny ones hidden in walls or some detectors, it'll glow a bluish-purple on the phone screen. If you have a red LED flashlight that can assist in making it easier to see, turn off all lights and use it. You may have to strobe the flashlight in some cases. This isn't a guarantee, but it's worked for me in many situations of finding cameras

The mirror thing is easily remedied by adding a glass pane thin enough to simulate the gap between your finger and the reflection. If the finger reflection technique does not work, try to remove the mirror from the wall or cover it with a towel if you you feel unsecured. And if you're unsure about the room you're staying in, I recommend to just leave. Better to be safe than sorry. Remember, people dissappear daily. You don't want to be one of those people.

If it’s happening, it will be simple to identify in this manner. It will look like a bright light on your phone screen. There will be a small hole or lens near the place the bright light shines from. That’s the camera.
Another way to find out if a room you are in is bugged is an echo. Just say a few words. If your voice sounds like its echoing, possible there is an audio device at least. RF detectors are good for sweeps.

There are bump keys some landlords may be able to use. Management Companies can and do have one made to open all doors to all Condo's, apartments when there are multi-dwelling units. It's easier for them to use one key for emergencies. When they don't call to say they are coming in an emergency that is a dead give away they are using bump keys because they don't use individual keys with key tags attached with the tenants/homeowners phone #. So any superintendent or the guy that does the punch list can have a copy without Management knowing. They can easily install tiny covert cameras into the wall outlet sockets that look like a tiny screw. There are sick individuals out there. Bump keys and these camera's should be illegal to sell .

You will see a light coming off of the small bulb like thing at the end of the remote when you're watching what you recorded. Whereas if you observe it with your naked eye, you won't see a light. The human eye cannot detect IR but your phone's camera can.

I strongly feel this landlord has cameras or sometime wireless going on my apt... My bath mirrors have mirrors every angle inside and out. Everywhere I walk in my I hear he following me above me in my apt? How do I detect and report it to the police?

I was able to touch my reflection in my own bathroom mirror. I also shined my phone light into it, but all I saw was some scary looking dude with a hook for a hand staring back at me.
Not to make you paranoid people even worse, but I used to do hidden camera installs in businesses 25 years ago. You couldn't find what we would have done then, I doubt there is anyway to find things with new tech. This guy already missed some of the key places we would do things.

You need to find it and destroy it. Use a bug detector/ hidden camera finder. You can get it from Amazon. Destroy it but then make sure you're safe
