Thank you!! I am new to WC. I used to be an oil painter for years. I worked very big. I would paint along with my late husband on a back-to-back easel and when he passed, I put it all away. Didn't have the heart to create any longer. Thank goodness I had treasured friends who put everything in storage instead of throwing it out as I'd asked. When the pandemic hit, I was happy to be alone all the time - not a healthy thing for me. Again, my friends came to the rescue and bought me new supplies. WC and art journals to work in on a much smaller basis. I found that I enjoyed it a great deal. I miss my husband awfully, but I have found comfort in colour and form again! Such an enormous blessing. I appreciate your channel very much. You don't talk down to us and your tutorials are wonderful! Thank you, thank you! Much Love and Bless xo
Thank you for this. Loving what you do, love your tutorials, and really appreciate your guidance. I have learned so much from you. I studied commercial art and graphic art many years ago and have always doodled but never used my art in any regular practice. Now that I am retired, I have picked it up again and looking to use some of those principles of style, creating my own compositions ... or finding my style. Again thank you so much for all of your work.
Thank you Louise! I’m nearly 65 and don’t have decades left… LOL . I followed you during two years on patreon. Now I’m following a few others to further challenge myself. One I stopped within a month. Another one is all about wet in wet, a true challenge but very inspiring. A third one also has her true self style. I’m still missing you and I know I will return to you in the end but hopefully I have learned a few more tricks and challenges and most importantly, learned more about myself. Especially what you said: find the topics that attract you most. I also learned to say no to people asking to paint their pets 😅. So, I’m learning and always watching your news. Thanks again and till later.
Great advice, Louise, one thing that draws me to your paintings is the juxtaposition of a defined subject with the abstract flow of paint extending off of it for a background with movement. It captures the essence of what we probably all love about the watercolor medium. ❤
Louise I appreciate your enlightening vision. I am a beginner - haven't yet thought of how to develop my own personal style. This talk and demonstration has me thinking in a new way. That's a rare gift, thank you!
Thank you, Louise for your words, that make me feel better. In the last time I felt stopped in being creative and that it's not going ahead with my learning in "my own" watercolour style, technics and self trust. Fun should be in the foreground. You are great in teaching and painting and to give people (and me) hope, not only in painting. Thank you so much ❤️ All the best for you and your family, Susanne from Germany 🍀🌹
Thank you so much for this video. I feel like it came along at just the right time in my art journey. I have been watching and learning from your channel for years since I started painting again in 2020. In 2022 one of my pieces was a finalist in the David Shepard Wildlife Artist of the year competition but I felt like a fraud, like the one piece was not something I could reproduce. Now I feel like, I'm doing the right thing by making paintings that are totally different because I'm still figuring out what my own personal style is. And since that competition I've made paintings I absolutely did not like and I wondered if I was just kidding myself trying to be an artist! Thanks for sharing your own personal vulnerabilities, putting yourself out on that watercolour paper exposes more of us than we want to admit. Thank you again and I'm so glad to share your journey!
Thank you, your videos help me understand a lot about the process of watercolor painting. My Grandmother was a artist. She passed away about 20 years ago. Painting brings back memories of her. There’s times when I feel like she is watching me. We did paint together from time to time. I can tell you how much I appreciate how you made me feel. I look forward to seeing your beautiful videos. Have a wonderful bless day.
I found mine. I created and developed what is called in the fluid acrylic art world The Botanical Dutch Pour❤🌿. I love many different art mediums which is why I have subscribed to your channel and have been watching your creative art style of which I love, I am so happy I can go from one medium to another and enjoy so much about all of them. Thanks for sharing all you do. You are awesome!!! While I am still a growing artist and still much to learn but I am loving my journey this far. ❤
I saw a technique of scooping soap bubbles onto paper and dropping watercolors on them and letting it dry. Seeing your goldfish gave me an idea for the technique as a background for fish. Love your art, love your presentations.
Thank you so much Louise for your wonderful and wise insights, as they have inspired me to continue exploring this beautiful technique which I practise for nearly 30 years and I am still learning every day. I love, love your art.
Thank-you so much! You have certainly helped me figure out why I've been feeling out of sorts with my art these last few months - I've not been listening to my heart and not painting what excites me. Thanks to your words of wisdom, I know what to do now to recapture that excitement I used to have (I thought it was gone forever). Lots of love ❤❤❤
Thank you for the videos you make. They are always so inspiring and the art you share and create is always so stunning. I used to tear up paintings that didn't turn out and throw them away ... now, I use them for doing collage on the covers of my watercolor journals that I create.
Thank you! I stop doing painting for five years and I’m really having a hard time coming back. I’m also struggling finding my own art style. Thank you for this enlightenment and encouragement video ❤
You inspire me, Louise and watching your videos last year created the desire in me to try watercolor. I know it takes time and I'm very grateful for your teaching. Thank you. 🌹
As always, excellent information. I agree about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. I do that a lot, but then sometimes I feel as though I flopped, so maybe that means I'm doing something right. There's a balance, I suppose. An artist may jump too far ahead of themselves and get discouraged, while another artist isn't afraid to take the risk and just dive in no matter the outcome (kind of freeing really). It's all about learning and growing, not only in your artistic skills but also in learning about yourself. A few people have commented to me that they can always tell if it's my work by the style. I chuckle at that because I don't see it yet. Perhaps it's sort of like how things appear through the lenses of another's eyes.
Thanks Louise that was such a balanced approach to finding style! I’ve always worried that having a style would end up being boring, but funnily enough we end up developing one whether we like it or not😜. Happy painting, sending a big Qld hello😊
I never thought of a style. Just that what will be will be. I do know that I love your style and your subjects. Thank you so much for your time and effort.
I love fading the edges into the background but the first artist shown takes this and makes it soar. I have a ways to go... It's always about the journey. Love your artwork.
This is a great video and the first I've seen discussing developing one's style. (I only hope my style does not turn out to be as bad as my handwriting - ha!) Thanks too for showing the other artists too. Thanks for the wonderful tips!!
Thank you Louise. Insightful and helpful as always. Really good to hear this. I always feel so much more relaxed about learning my art when I have watched one of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you Louise! I've been following your channel for a couple of years and I love it. I look forward to every post. I'm not progressing as quickly as I'd like, but I have watched your techniques and subjects expand and it's been inspirational to me.
Thank you for words of wisdom, always. Style personal or taught, is always a learning experience! Perfect words to hear, I am always looking if I have a Style! Karen Dirmish Elmhurst 10:3210:32
Some great information for us thank you Louise. I am searching for my own style while trying out different techniques and hope I settle to something soon, meanwhile I am enjoying your video tutorials and your inspiration Thank you xx
Thank you Louise for the confirmation that I'm on the right track. Still have not found my own personal style, but, as a new watercolor painter (3 years of painting), I know I'll get there some day. By the way, I do admire your work greatly and specifically your style of incorporating "soft edges" into your subjects. A technique I am still learning!
I loved this video! Thank you for making this and reminding us as artists that a journey isn't completed in a particular time frame but is ongoing. I think my brain wants the results to be instantaneous rather than allowing them to mature. Great message and video😊
I love this video. So inspiring! And love your top. Those colors really suit you. Maybe its the balance between white space and bright colors that I like... a bit like in your art. I didn't know you had a newsletter. I prefer that way of staying in touch as opposed to social media. It was hard to find the link since it is mot in the menu or at the bottom of the page. When I saw it on the main page I thought it was to sign up for class since it did mention anything about a newsletter until after I submitted my information. Glad I found it and look forward to reading you.
I should know this intuitively as it took me years to develop my own style with my photography work. Somehow I thought one creative style would flow into the other, But no. LOL. Like you said though...at least the journey is a lot of fun :)
But there are also some arguments against having distinct (or maybe too distinct) art-style: - artist might be trapped into recognizable artstyle, especially if they are locked into it financially, i.e. people only buy their work if this is that familiar artstyle and not anything else. This might be detrimental to the artist's mental state and their reputation as one-trick pony. - AI (and humans, to lesser degree) easily copies artstyles if as little as six works is dumped into AI trainng, to the point that it is possible to create an artificial painter doing endless work of in a style of one artist or another. Counter-argument for that would be that AI permutations will only make the original work more valuable, but there are some evidence on contrary, where artists reported the declining income because AI just creates imitations of them (artstyle cannot be copyrighted (which is a blessing on a larger scale but small comfort to a particular artist), hence owners of AI also make money from somebody's else style). My teacher said 'Don't develop defined artstyle, develop your mind and hands, and keep going forward.'
I’ve always had a realistic style, even in pastel. With watercolor, it doesn’t really work. For one, it takes way too long, and two, it doesn’t show off the medium’s best qualities. I like to paint our local wildlife, which, along with some landscapes (local again). I am able to sell my paintings, i think that is mostly because the people where I live have sentimental feelings about our critters and landmarks. But I don’t really like my watercolors that much. And they take so long to do, I can never get the money I feel I should considering the time I put in….so right now my biggest struggles are being too tight, and capturing light. I am getting better at light - just wish I could loosen up.
About personal, artistic style... What if you feel like working in different styles because of the way you feel at a particular moment? Shouldn't it be like wearing clothes? Some people wear the same clothes but most like to vary their wardrobe according to how it makes them feel. Why can't art be the same? Art collectors collect works from different artists to enjoy. Why can't an artist have fun enjoying working in different styles and still be taken seriously? Sorry about the long query ❤

Love this! I went through the links for your brushes and did not see the brush you used with a blue handle. What is the brush please?
I searched and searched in Pinterest and cannot find your art adoration? I am a patreon member with you and you’re fantastic

love your videos always waiting for new one can please make a video or share about list of artist that inspires you to create
Thank you and thank you for the suggestion.
I see you using a da Vinci Colineo in this video. How do you like the Colineo? Do you feel that they paint like sable brushes?

Thank you, Louise. I'm so frustrated because I can copy a picture very well, but I can't seem to find a signature style. 😢
You will! Keep at it and give it time.❤️

I hear you, it takes a lot of practice to loosen up!
I have 2 styles, prob more actually lol 😝 it all debends in what i am drawing/painting
It took me years to find my signature on my paintings. I STILL haven't found my style !
🥰😍🤩😘
7:24 But if you DO "tear them up in disgust," you can later use them to form a collage. 🤠

I think mine is just insisting on a background on my flower paintings
I see your style already...which no one has...100% sure
I wish that I I had decades left.
You don't find your personal art style. It finds you
