Lisbon (Lisboa) is the second-oldest capital city in Europe (after Athens) and among the oldest cities in the world having existed for centuries before other contemporary European capitals. Pre-Celtic tribes had settled there, and the Phoenicians eventually created and brought civilization to it.
Julius Caesar gave the area the name Felicitas Julia, a municipium, by adding the term to the original Olissipo. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, a number of Germanic tribes, chiefly the Visigoths, reigned over it starting in the fifth century.
The Moors later took control of it in the eighth century. The city was taken over by Afonso Henriques in 1147, and it replaced Coimbra as the capital of Portugal in 1255. Since then, it has served as the nation's hub for politics, the economy, and culture.
