I was one of the guys who bought a set of your Surftones along with Max and some of the other Va Beach hunters and I LOVE them! SO much more comfortable than any others I have owned. They stay in place and I don't have to keep "fiddling" with them as they just don't slip off. I can also easily keep one completely or partially off of one ear when hunting in any locations where I might need to listen to what's around me and not just the tones.
Mal is not kidding when he says theses are LOUD and they are! I couldn't believe how high you can get the volume and the sounds are much more clear and distinct then with other phones. Where I live in Va Beach, a nearby military base has F18 fighter jets and other aircraft flying directly overhead as it's part of the landing and takeoff zones. With other headphones (even with tape over the drain holes) the jets are so loud I would actually have to stop and wait for them to pass as you could hear NOTHING in the others even with the CTX volume all the way at max settings. With the Surftones, I had to scale it WAY back and they are still loud and clear even when the jet jockeys are hitting their afterburners and ripping by overhead.
I have not yet put them to the test in the surf with waves smacking into me and drenching them but I will be doing that real soon!
Mal, these are some great headphones and I am SO happy I got them! The others will now be rolled up and stored away as backups but with the sturdiness of the Surftones I may never have to take them out again! Well done sir!

I've recently ordered a set of Mals SuperblueS and have given them a try now on 2 trips to the fields. Build quality is excellent and the sound quality is amazing, the fields are alive again with diggable signals. I purchased a pair of surffones for my Excalibur and have since used them on my CTX. They are the best headphones out there! I just ordered 2 more pairs for my 2 CTXs. I am deaf in one ear and these have helped increase my finds in the surf zone! They are great at noise cancelling, very loud and very comfortable!! Thanks Mal for such a great product!!!
I really enjoy your vids. Very educational. I was inspired by you to built my own phones for my Excal about a year ago. I used an MSA headset, real speakers, and Gortex. Buying them from you and having them shipped would have been pretty expensive and I do have some skills so I opted to build my own. best mod ever Thanks Mal.

Thanks mal received my SurffoneS yesterday these are brilliant.quality is very good and the sound is really crisp they also block out surrounding noise so you can here those faint targets I've been wanting a set of these for some time as I've heard so many people talking good things about these on different forums now I know why anyone that's thinking of getting these don't think just get them you won't be disappointed.

I recently purchased a brand new CTX 3030 for use in the surf & occasional beach work (when the sea is a bit lumpy).
Mal's SurffoneS were recommended by a detecting mate who already uses them. I got in touch with Mal who responded very quickly & just over a week later they arrived at my home in Spain. Like Mal, I have been detecting for more years than I'm willing to admit to so have went through many pairs of headphones which have all succumbed to internal cable breakage leading to crackling, blanking out then total demise. Also, through the years my biggest grouch has been paying a fortune for headphones that have about 6" (150mm) of curly cable attached (or that's what it felt like when digging a target). The first impression of my new SurffoneS was just how good the build quality was. Holding them in my hands they felt like proper, professional, heavy duty headphones that will stand up to the sort of rough weather treatment they generally get from us. I was given the choice of 3 different lengths of curly cable. I chose the shortest which was 900mm, as most of my detecting won't involve kneeling on the ground searching through clumps of soil whilst trying to avoid dragging my detector around by my head. If this sounds like you, opt for the very generous larger lengths offered. Today I went down to the beach & gave them a 'field test'. Having adjusted them to my head size & turned down the volume on my detector (they are very loud), I set off into the water which was a bit rough after recent storms. The SurffoneS eliminated almost all of the background noise & the target signals when they came, were crystal clear. Even the whispers of deeply buried small coins were easily heard because of background noise elimination. In summary: A first class addition to any detectorists armoury & well worth the investment because these look like they will outlast the usual chocolate ones that we pay a fortune for. Thanks Mal for a great piece of kit & a speedy service. I'm out with them again tomorrow. There's treasure out there somewhere! HH
Since i bought the Excalibur i have struggled with the crappy koss headphones. I read about the Surffones mod on the Minelab owners forum and contacted Mal and ordered them.
They are built well of high quality components, and are wery comfortable and the sound quality is fantastic !
I am very happy with the choice i made, and i recommend these headphones, specially for beach hunting.
WOW Just used my new SuperBlues and realised in this life that Quality Counts Excellent Build Crisp Tones Superb Fit and on/off switch while using a pinpointer

Just reseved the headphones in the post ,was taken back with the qualuty ,they feel bomb proof ,the video dont do them justice, I did a bit of head banging and they dont budge one bit ,you feel deaf when you first put them on as no sound comes in ,even my wife said "why are you shouting" lol ,like the warning says that Mal sends you ,turn your volume down first ,,they are loud,I had to turn my threshold down to 13 !!! The signals come through loud and clear ,it has made my CTX 10 times better ,they are so comfy you cant feel them ,Mal made mine to my own spec with the wire on the left as I keep my WM10 in a mag pouch on my left side ,very well made ,top product by a top man ,Thank you Mal ,as I have been looking at headphones for a year ,I am so glad I did not waste my money on grey ghost 🤘🤘

I purchased a pair of Super Blues and tried them for the first time today. They are all that Mal says they are. They are heavy duty with really great sound.I like every thing about them, wouldn't change anything.

Why did I wait…. Just got a pair of Superblues for my Manticore, superb build quality, super silky tones (and loud so be careful to set the volume with the headphones slightly off ear to get the right balance), the headphones sit well and very comfy on my head, furthermore they cut out so so much external noise… wish I got these for my earlier detectors.

I ordered a pair for my Excalibur with the end cap.I received my order in New York in just over a week.I haven't installed them on my Xcall yet due to moving.Today i had some time so i put them on my CTX.I gotta say I'm blown away by these headphones!!They fit so tight that background noise is pretty much gone.They are the most comfortable headphones i ever tried.I had to turn the volume on my CTX down some because they were almost to loud.I can't wait to install these bad boys on my Xcall.BUH BYE Sloppy Yellow Crap headphones...Very impressed Mal....

3rd time lucky... 1) stock headphones that come with the CTX, modeled to fit huge sized ears and bonce! they kept slipping off which is quite frankly, bloody annoying. Set number 2 was someones homemade conversion of ear defenders which gave a poor audio experience and the conversion looked like a blue peter experiment...Set number 3 is Mals SuperblueS and finally I have a quality pair of headphones that knock the socks of the others I've had. Excellent build quality with sound & tonal clarity that is bright, crisp and clear. Coupled with a volume range that allows you to knock back the VL on the CTX by a considerable amount these headphones would I'm sure, suit detectorists of differing hearing requirements. I love 'em, thanks Mal.

I've been using Mal's SurffoneS for a week or so now and have to say the clarity and tonal range are beyond anything I have ever used, and I've used a lot lol....they are also the loudest :-) so be warned! the Minelab Koss phones my CTX came with just sound dead after using the SurffoneS...they really are that good :-)

I have purchased two sets of SurffoneS; one for a CTX two years ago and now a set for an Equinox 800 (EQ800). I primarily hunt on the beach.
I initially purchased a different set of headphones for the EQ800 from a reputable person in California (I’ll call T&E) and immediately regretted my decision.
Comparing the two:
+ SurffoneS use the dark blue MSA Left/Right Medium ear muffs (Noise Reduction Rating 25). T&E uses white MSA Left/Right Low (NRR 21). The difference in ambient noise cancellation is HUGE. Part of the difference may be because T&E has drilled holes in the headphone cups to allow water to drain and this impacts the NRR.
+ SurffoneS use a much thicker and more durable cable then T&E. Mal’s cable also has redundant connections to the speakers in case one of the wires fails.
+ SurffoneS are made with better quality materials. The thicker cable and protected connections to the earphone cups reduce opportunities for failure.
= SurffoneS use a 90° headphone jack. T&E uses a straight jack. I like the 90° better but this is a matter of preference.
= The tones on the SurffoneS and T&E headphones are about the same. If not for the difference in ambient noise, I imagine the volume would be about the same also.
- T&E headphones are completely waterproof. The headphone jack has a waterproof gasket and is screwed on. The headphone connection for the SurffoneS just plugs in. It is not waterproof and could pop out of the EQ800 if given a good tug.
- The T&E headphones are lighter. This is primarily due to the weight of the cable on the SurffoneS.
For me the big difference between these two headphones are a choice between ambient noise cancellation and being waterproof. While on the beach, it’s very important to hear tones over the wind, waves, and rain. I do not intend to submerge my EQ800. For those rare occasions when I hunt in the rain, I will use the WM08 wireless module under my Gore-Tex jacket. In addition, the quality of the SurffoneS assembly is superior!

Though I won't get them for about a month (my choice I asked Mal to hold them until I arrived in England in September), I'm sure I won't have a problem with them. Where to start... I bought a CTX3030 which as a metal detector is everything it should be and more. However the headset supplied with it are to put it mildly a disappointment. They are a poor and slack fit over the ears, the headband is always sliding off your head and they have so many nooks and crannies it is impossible to get them clean. So I read up on what is available and decided Mal's SuperblueS were ALMOST what I wanted. When I say almost, I didn't like the bright blue colour, I didn't want the long lead and I didn't want a jackplug sticking down from the ear-cup.
So I contacted Mal who was very quick to respond and agreed he could do me a set of SuperblueS in the Grey shells with a short cable and a fixed cable at the headset end rather than one connecting via a jackplug. Despite Mal going into Hospital just after I placed the order, the headset arrived 2 weeks later just as per my requested specification.
They are built very well indeed, the quality of components and workmanship is very high. They immediately felt secure and comfortable despite the fact I wear spectacles, they did not cause too much pressure on the arms. I tested them both through the WM10 and direct into the CTX3030 and did a few test runs with targets in the garden. The sound quality and tone is excellent and there was no trace of any wind noise despite it blowing a gale at the time.
Would I recommend them to a friend? Definitely. Do I thing it was money well spent? Without a doubt.
I recently bought the CTX, the machine is legendry, unfortunately the headphones provided are not, loose fitting which has an effect on the clarity of signals also they have no volume control. After watching the above video the Superblues are the ones I have chosen, for the land I have opted for the 3ft lead with a straight jack into the headphones and 90 deg jack into the wireless module I also bought the 4ft with the 8 pin waterproof jack for beach use although I do the wet sand, however I don't go into the sea. Build quality is good. Just to add that there is also an on/of switch, which makes pinpointing a breeze, along with Mals' knowledge and advice makes the "phones" good value.

SurffoneS are £85 including UK delivery and the Excalibur COMBO kit needed to convert the Excalibur to the CTX type socket is £40 if ordered with the SurffoneS or £44.40 if sent separate.

Hi Mal ,time for me to get a set of your headphones ,just wondering if you can make up a set of surfphones ( grey ones )but with a straight jack to fit in the WM10 and not the 90* jack as I use a AR15 waterproof mag pouch to hold my WM10 in and there wont be room to fit it the 90* jack ,I wont be using my CTX in the water land use only ,but need something that is weatherproof and dont fall of my head ,also could they be made so the cable comes out of the left hand ear cup as my mag pouch sits on my left side ,I will call you tomorrow for a price ;)

Hi Uncle Gong, thanks for watching and your enquiry.
Both are fine for detecting in the rain as the membranes and the grommets are sealed. The SurffoneS are totally water resistant and the SuperblueS are rain proof.
Many have used the SuperblueS in the rain and no issues with water ingress. You may get water into them if you drop the SuperblueS in water as there is a jack connector but not had any back who have unfortunately done this if the jack stays in the socket.
If water hunting I would recommend the SurffoneS but for all other hunting both will be most suitable.
