  • Last year I started purchasing grafted avocado trees once I learned that certain varieties that can grow in hardiness zone 9a. I am on the coast of south Walton County in NW Florida - on the fringe of 8b and 9a. On top of the climate, my soils are sandy and the trees are growing in ground about 1000 feet from the Gulf of Mexico so salt is also a factor.
Here I have a Brogdon, Taylor, and Lila avocados in ground with several varieties in pots. I am also doing an experiment with the Mallika mango variety.
The total avocado varieties I am growing are:
    Brogdon x3
    Winter Mexican
    Taylor
    Day
    Bacon
    Florida Hass
    Lula
    Lila
    Fantastic x2
    Mexicola Grande x2
    Mexicola
    Poncho/pancho

Brogdon can handle mid 20s nights in a sheltered area. I have one in a 7 gallon pot, and parked in it a corner with brick walls on each side. It came through a 22 degree night recently with just a few leaf tips browned. A slight haze of frost on the leaves is not a big deal.

Good to see Mallika doing good in Zone 9A. I am in Zone 9B Bay Area -- I bought several varieties of mangoes over past two years, but they almost all died (even though they were put in heated greenhouse in winter) -- maybe rootstock/my native soil issue? They all died starting from the top (a few of my avocado varieties succumbed the same way). The ones that survived are Okrung, Ice cream, Butter cream, Neelum and Glenn. I bought them all from online nurseries in Florida. Surprisingly, I have found out that Sapodillas are more cold hardy than mangoes.

I am from the bay area. You will be better off planting mango seedlings and save time and $. The problem with grafted mangoes from Florida on Turpentine rootstock is that this specific rootstock does really well only in Florida where they have very sandy soil. In the Bay area, we don't have this soil and on top of that, our Winter is long, wet, and cold. I've have some grafted trees died and the ones that survived would just sit there for years without much growth. You are better off growing the Manila seedlings that Homedepot and Lowes sell or germinate other Polyembronic seeds that are true to type like the Sweet tart variety. I have seedlings in ground now and they do way better that grafted mangoes. Seedlings can tolerate our clay/heavy soil better and are hardier during the winter. They also don't take that longer to flower, about 3-4 years.

@@acidnut Thanks for your information! I haven't seen any mango seedlings in HD or Lowe's lately (I mean, in the last few years), but I will keep a lookout for them. Thanks again!

The mallika is doing well with a lot of new growth in the last 2-3 months. I plan on protecting only the mallika and letting the 11 avocado varieties fend for themselves.

@@0anant0 I bought four Manila mangoes at homedepot this spring and summer. They have it pretty often, you just gotta go and look for it starting early Spring and through summer. People snatch them up quick at $35 each.
