  • Three continuous nights below freezing with the lows at 22, 23, and 31. Take a look and see how everything fared. The pure Mexican varieties did the best.

    You need a Pancho avocado. They're good down to 18 degrees.

    It take christmas lights and or 12gph microsprinklers to keep plants warm and some protection from wind if its windy

    You have an amazing collection of Avocados. Yea This Artic blast was really crazy this year.. and it was my first time trying out the incandescent Christmas string lights. It worked really well and saved a lot of my ultra sensitive trees. See if you can go to Home Depot and grab some they should still be on discount last time I check and give it a try.

    It’s amazing how cold hardy some of the Avocado varieties are compared to others. I do believe some of those just may have not been established enough and that may be the cause they didn’t handle the cold as well.

      Very true. I had high hopes for the Brogdon. It was a small 7 gallon when I planted it in February 2021 and almost tripled in size to December. I think it'll still make it but 75%+ dieback - we'll see. The pure Mexican types are the best for my climate in 9A

    Even a 9B zone can be dicey for Mangoes. You'll probably want the most cold-hardy variety you can find, and you'll still need to give it sporadic protection. Overall with the avocados, you got the result I would expect for three mid-20ish nights and no protection. You might do OK with a California hybrid such as Bacon, Zutano, or Stewart if you don't want to limit solely to the "full Mexican" lineage.

    It is so sad to see this happened. As I know watering before freezing is BAD idea, water turns to ice while freezing and roots that was soaked in it getting frozen too especially those close to surface.

    really sad to see! I live in the Netherlands, zone 8a/b and I have a ''fantastic'' in mijn greenhouse, and with some protection also outside. In the greenhouse, so no wind or anything, it took 17F as a plant similar to yours. My ''Joey'' died, and the fantastic survived barely, 10cm above the ground it made a mighty shoot up, and now it's pretty big. I took a roof window out of the greenhouse for it to grow bigger. The part outside the greenhouse did not take the frost of 2 weeks ago very well. We did ice skating on shallow waters for 4 days, and it went to 10F just above the ground. With straw and fleece, my small grafted fantastic outside the greenhouse survived that very well, but it's only 40cm high, so easy to cover up. If you protect at least the lowest 30cm, the plant will probably recover from there. Some winters we barely have any frost for the last 20 years, so I keep trying. Good luck with the plants!

    Most of those avocados could probably have survived unscathed with just incandescent lights underneath with a frost cloth covering, its definitely worth doing that under 26 degrees Avocados do not die fast if they dont push new growth by summer you might see signs of decline or no growth, and wont know what's causing it it takes months up to a year before they pass away good luck but I think most will survive.

    One way to save the trees I heard on UA-cam is christmas lights (they stay warm) and put a barrel or 3 of straight water the water will absorb the cold and help the trees

    Does watering before a freeze help with the cold?

  • @0anant0

    Hope they all survive and come back in spring. The Day, Mexicola, Mallika, Duncan etc. in pots could have been moved? Did you try any frost cloth? Fantastic avocado is really cold hardy. I have one in 9B and it does not need any protection. Do you have any sapodillas? If so, how did they fare?

    • @northflbeachavocadoszone9a
      @northflbeachavocadoszone9a  Рік тому

      You are right about the ability to move the young varieties. I was out of town the first night of the freeze. I feel like the damage was done to the potted avo's after one night below 22. I only frost clothed the Taylor Avocado and the Mallika mango. No sapodillas here. The Mexican avocado are very encouraging in my opinion. If you are zone pushing it should not be a question what variety to choose - pure mexican or nothing.

    Uggh. Sorry man. Curious how your Lula fared? Mine over in Melbourne has thrived for about 20 years and survived many dips into the 20's, though it had some growth/bark on it when the coldest temps occurred. And yes, I noted the difference between your "Fantastic" tree and the Lila/Opal. Your "Fantastic" is obviously the Del Rio/Pryor. My "Fantastic" turned out to be an Opal/Lila; it looks identical to your Lila tree. I found the Lowe's tag in the drawer.

    • @northflbeachavocadoszone9a
      @northflbeachavocadoszone9a  Рік тому

      The Lula looks about the same as the Brogdon in this video. Been in the ground over a year and will have significant die back but I do not think it is lost. It is just disheartening knowing a freeze like we just encountered will repeatedly cause significant damage.

      @@northflbeachavocadoszone9a Uggh. I am sorry. I feel your pain. I love avocados too. You're going to have to stick to the Mexican varieties: Opal/Poncho/Pryor. Try Wilma/Brazos Belle if you see it. I ate some of those this last summer and they were tasty, just a huge seed and very little meat, but what was there was great. Eat the skin; don't bother trying to peel.

      @Seaheart88 Рік тому

      @@northflbeachavocadoszone9a The Wilma/Brazos Belle is completely Mexican genes, as far as I know. Someone here in Melbourne is growing it and sold a bunch this last (late) August; I bought several and tried and they tasted great, very close to Hass. Gave up trying to peel and just ate the skin. If I was in a cold-limiting area it would be one I would try to have. The Fantastic/Lila/Opal I have is fairly bland in taste.
