    I never saw the mallet coming, wow, you got me... well done!!!
    I worked at bowling alleys for many years as a pinsetter tech and have a fond memory of skinning the pins, and spending weeks to wash them.
    There a lot of work that goes on in the back of the house to keep everything running smoothly, but when there's down-time... 🤔💁🎉🎉🎉

    J-Mack, you are a legend on the lathe, no question but...your oscillating multi-tool skills here are ridiculous. The way you took that DeWalt longitudinally without any pencil lines or straight edges (freehand!) was beautiful! Thanks for all your content. I really like your channel, brother.

    To be used as a mallet after so much effort put in to lathe it. Kind of a weird idea.
    Might as well use the bowling pin to be use as mallet just as it is!

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 місяці тому +3

      Well, not really. The turning took about 5 minutes. And all carving mallets are made on a lathe.
      The bowling pin doesn’t have a comfortable handle.. your comment is bullshit. What a waste of both our time 😆

    Neat. Can you turn a bowling pin into a set of smaller bowling pins and a ball and then make a table that you can table-bowl on out of old bowling alley floor? I don't even know if its real wood.

    • @JamesCouch777
      @JamesCouch777 2 місяці тому

      It's real wood. They tore down an old bowling alley near me and I've still got some of the alley wood.

    • @DeathAngelHRA
      @DeathAngelHRA 2 місяці тому

      Most lanes are now synthetic with the original wood laned and cribbing left in place underneath. When you run out of thickness available for resurfacing, then the synthetic lanes are added. That's how all the bowling alleys are that I've worked at the last couple of years.

    Maple makes a poor woodworkers mallet. Although a hardwood, it's side grain is softer than the end grain on any chisel it will be coming in contact with. It will damage quickly but I realize you're not making something practical or functional, only something to post for a video.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 місяці тому +1

      It incredibly how many people think I’m making an object when I’m clearly making a video. Well done for being a smarty pants, and also very good point about side grain mallets. I make much smaller side grain palm mallets from Hornbeam, they dent as all mallets will but they last a very long time.

    • @NortonCombat-ib3xw
      @NortonCombat-ib3xw 2 місяці тому

      @@JackMackWoodturning Hornbeam is not that hard either. Lots of better options, there's a reason the best mallets are made from lignum vitae and they last. Transmission of power is suppressed with softer woods.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 місяці тому

      @NortonCombat-ib3xw hornbeam isn’t hard?? You’ve shown your level of knowledge by dropping LV as a mallet option. You seem to be trying to imply you have a better grasp of woodworking than I do.., many people do, but it doesn’t seem like you are one of them. LV Much better for bearings than mallets and not a very sustainable option, but I guess you mean old bowls balls. 🫣 I can harvest a branch of hornbeam on a walk in my woods. It’s an excellent native wood for mallets. Most commercially available mallets are made from beech. Do you think that’s a beater option than hornbeam ?

    • @NortonCombat-ib3xw
      @NortonCombat-ib3xw 2 місяці тому

      @@JackMackWoodturning Hornbeam is not a commercial species of hardwood and because of this it is only sporadically available as an air-dried lumber. It's not even harder than Sugar Maple but Maple is available as a commercial species, and generally only available kiln dried. When you kiln dry most species the kiln heat bakes and 'case hardens' the surface and that's one reason why Hard (Sugar) Maple will have a much harder skin surface than Hornbeam. I used to purchase Hornbeam in 8/4 and 12/4 thickness, live-sawn out of the U.K. It used to be popular with print makers but print making is now a dead trade. They used it because it was close grained and due to it being air dried it was easy to carve. Hop Hornbeam is a North American sub-species of the Hornbeam species and is much harder than Hornbeam. Hop hornbeam is a slow growth, very small, non commercial lumber species rarely seen and rarely larger than 8" in diameter. Hop Hornbeam is harder than Sugar Maple. Me: I owned a lumber company in Toronto, Ontario for over 30 years. I also owned a manufacturing facility making hardwood flooring and molding, stair components and panels. Our kilns were in Alliston, Ontario. I sold 70 species of hardwood lumber from Afromosia to Zebrano, from 4/4 to 16/4 thicknesses. I supplied cabinet makers, luthiers, commercial kitchen and woodworking shops, home builders and hobbyists. Yes, I know lumber.
