- Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe is a great alternative to a turbo wash and it is insanely easy!
This is a quick tomato paste wash that delivers on simplicity and flavour . . . . or so I am told.
Anyway, let's get this made so I can stock up on vodka and get to making some GIN!

Thanks for this. I am Birdwatcher, now retired from distilling since 2010. Enjoy. G
Ayyyyeeeeee, welcome. I really need to sort my stuff out and still this! It's stripped and waiting. But I have been slack!
Thanks for the recipe!
Update......I ran this batch and I love it. Thanks again for the awesome recipe
@@StillIt Get'r dun! ;)
Sorry - see you did lol
I have been doing this for about 5 years now. In 15 lts of water,3 kg of brown sugar, about 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice, 3 desert spoons tomato paste, lastly 5 desert spoons of Lowans bread making yeast. All available at the local store. Has always worked for me.
I'm gonna try this Cheers :D
I have been watching you for some time, since the boredom of covid. I started just making wine. A bad tasted wine had me distill it. Because of some of the recipes you've done and the encouragement that you've given I have made some what I think is quite nice alcohol. I let my boss try it and he liked it so much that he wants me to try and open myself up managing a small rum Distillery here in Jamaica. I must thank you for all your help and I will be continuing to watch. I love this tomato paste vodka wash
Hey John. I am now retired in Ottawa ON and live in an apartment. No more stills. It breaks my heart to pay $25.00 for 25OZ of vodka. ;-( Stay safe. G (Birdwatcher)
They have some small stills
BW Sugar say use 112 yeast on 40.lit ito the cakculator.
The brewers yeast Im using say 1 gm.on 1x 1lt of water. Thus 40 gm of yeast. The Q is. wich resepe do I use . 112 or 40 gm of yesdt. Big differance.
Love your vid.and humor.
Please advise.

Wow, I'm floored, for real. The original Birdwatcher. I have read tons and tons of your posts. I was just about to post here talking about Wineos sugar wash to let the ferment take a while to finish and, most of all, to really let it settle.Take extra time to let it settle. The Birdwatcher recipe is a bit more specialized using the airlock fermentation, which I've never tried but obviously would have an influence on the final product. Great to see you on here. Thank you!!
Hot water heater element with pid controller. Problem solved apartment guy
Pretty sure it's illegal to distill where he is without a license.
If you use a paint stirrer and a drill it means you can use room temp water AND it gets oxygenated at the same time. Takes hardly any time too
I’m not convinced a full ferment would complete in 2 days.
Are you mixing it up twice a day to accelerate the ferment process??
I love the fact that you aim for perfection but understand it’s not got to be so
Did my first using the Turbo 500 reflux, i swear that when you smelt it it was like smelling water not 92% alcohol, very impressed.
Once the parents were young, they used this recipe - sugar + yeast + tomato paste and an activator washing machine. very quickly fermented.
Yeah it goes quick!
@@StillIt and now the vodka-turbo yeast. complete lack of spirituality.))
The slow motion shots are mesmerizing. FYI, when I clicked on 'suggested videos' that pops up top right, the clicked-on video started up in a new tab as well as the current tab which I don't guess is what you intended.
Love the Schott beaker. Schott's a local company to me (San Jose California) and there's even a Schott Stadium.
Finally someone else knows how to open those bags 😅
If your having problems with the turbo yeast your most likely fermenting at to high a temp. Turbo should not be fermented above 25 c or 77 f
Let turbo get above 30 c and you can start to have foul smells and bad tastes. I leave my 5 gal batches sit at room temp around 70 f and the ferment temp will heat itself up to about 78 for the first couple days then even out at about 75 till finished. Treat turbo yeast more like you would if you were making a beer and you will get better results with it.
ROFL!! that spoon break at 5:05 😂🤣
I always use Lavlin EC1118 champagne yeast for my washes. It ferments clean and the finished product always tastes great...Cheers.
Agreed Norbury, But I really REALLY want to play withj 118. Have heard a lot fo good things about it! Will save that for something a little more . . . . sophisticated ;)
Thanks Conduct623!
I have been using it in my fruit mashes. And it has worked great, and it's good for the cold weather I have here.
Another great video! Awesome to see the classic BW recipe in action:-)>
Thanks my bro! Can't wait to try it.
Love your channel. Also your chuckle is first class.
Haha thanks man :)
When I was a kid. Especially in summer. I would be playing outside with the hose or under a sprinkler. I would often get thirsty under the Australian summer sun and drink from the hose. I still remember the rubbery taste of the water coming out of that hose. I'm not so sure I would want to use that in my washes. But I'm pretty new to Distillation so for all know distilling, double distilling and or filtering gets rid of that rubber hose smell/taste that to me is so clearly present in the water.
I'm pretty sure that happens when the hose and water sit out in the sun and heat up. With his stuff in shed maybe this isn't happening that much or just run water for 1 minute before adding to mash.
Where is the calculator you mentioned ?
I've been making birdwatchers wash now for about 2 months I love it a little tip twice the yeast is twice as fast but don't go overboard it's very easy to throw in a cheap little are still or make a big batch for a big sale
Your videos are immensely inspiring.. I have been a long time home brewer now exploring distilling, following in your footsteps. 😁 Love from India 🙏
Been doing tpw for a couple of years. Super easy and finished product tastes so much better than turbo wash. I run it twice through my reflux still and don’t even bother running through carbon filter as there is no need. I Use stock standard bread yeast from the supermarket and find it takes 2 weeks to ferment right out.
Awesome. Yeah its a good recipe eh?!
I have yet to use charcoal on anything. I guess I should have a play with it some time.
Love those great action shots and you always make everything so easy. Cheers!
Cheers mate apreciate it!
They are fun to make . . . . time consuming . . . .but fun! haha
Excellent video Jesse. BW is fantastic beginners recipe. You can make large quantities of neutral spirit quickly and easily. If you have reflux still it is fast and easy to distill. When I started I built a stock of neutral for injections and mixing which allowed me to take my time moving to all grain without getting frustrated. Maybe run some wash single run in ccvm reflux and some pot still strip and spirit... compare. As always Jessie, you are the man. Thank you for your time and effort.
Cheers my man.
Yeah I was really happy I made a decent size FFV for the same reason.
I'm pretty much out now though! More neutral I say!!
Yeah I do need to get around to trying a few
The birdwatchers should be good for that :)
HAHAHAHAHA you have had a bad run of things over the last few videos eh?
Dude, don't even worry about it! Just keep turning up and being awesome ;)
Your a GC mate ;) flick me a PM.
I forget that GC is not seen the way it is here in other places hahaha. I mean it in a honourable way I promise !
I've only made this to have a cheap wash to use as sacrificial cleaning. I don't have a reflux still (yet!) so I'm really interested in your tasting notes! I usually triple distill all bran when I need some base for gin or genever, I find the light cereal flavour helps out. Plus I can recut some of the not so neutral stuff into a pretty okay white dog, which makes a good cocktail mixer.
Awesome video man, keep it up.
Thats how I used it the first time too (slight alterations). But have yet to taste it!
Yeah honestly if I was making just for me I would have probably gone FFV again. But seemed smart for the channel to do this instead :)
Ok bro, no vid titles when you've been drinking! 🤣
Classic 8 turbo is awesome I've pulled 23% out of sugar washes with it, on a crappy stovetop still with a 48 hour ferment, first half of the run was 140 proof.
G'day from 'Oz.
Love the channel and enjoy following your journey...... (lolz).
Sooooo... what ever happened to this brew? I feel like a half empty jar. I would have liked to see a video on the final result / end product as I have tried this exact recipe 3 times over the last 7 years and all have ended up with a fragrant note and also a noticeable taste of tomato.
Admittedly my first was when I was starting out and I was only achieving around 85% from my still. The next two times was after I had refined my operation and could easily maintain the upper limits (95% to 96%) and yet I could still smell and taste the tomato. Do I just have sensitive taste buds??
PS.
Turbo's are fine if you use them for their purpose (ie. neutral spirits, not whiskeys and rum etc.) and don't push the yeasties too hard. The marketing can tell you 4 days for 18%, the reality for a good batch is 7 to 10 days for 14%, depending on the brand.
I have had exceptional results for many years but I offer these tips. Use less than max sugar (I aim for around 13% to 14% ABV). Airate the wash well when pitching. Keep the ferment at a stable temp and on the cooler side. Allow it to clear (some brands will clear well, others not so well, hence the adding of "crap" to clear it). And then it needs to be ran through a good reflux column which will achieve over 94%. And of coarse don't let the heads and tails taint your cut.
I also use 1 turbo satchel for a 150% sized batch, ie. a 40 litre batch instead of 25L and still aiming at the 13% mark.
PPS. Sorry for the long comment!
Thank you
Be sure to taste the fermented wash. It's interesting lol.
I skip the lemon and salts on mine. If your PH is reasonable you'll be fine without it.
Reflux time!
Yeah baby time to break out that ccvm head again!!
Cool thanks man :)
Just mixed my first 60 liters yesterday. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Awesome dude! You did it! I’m catching up on your Chanel. Keep up the good work. No body is perfect and every time is a learning process.
Thanks dude!!
Tpw is the best for neutral as for stirring just put your spoon in a electric drill makes it a lot easier and faster
I have heard many good things! Can't wait to taste it!
Good tip! I need to just pony up and buy a mixer head for the drill hahaha.
Yep...and vice versa! Norbury.
This is stainless mixer I have:
www.homedepot.com/p/24-in-Shaft-Stainless-Steel-Jiffy-Mixer-DC409/303055653
I got it off amazon a couple years back when it was on sale for $29.00 US.
It is short, and does need an extension. Going to fabricate one with a SS pipe and SS rod and silver solder it up.
You located in the US?
Another alternative would be to buy a 1.5 meter 8 or 10mm stainless rod or threaded rod and bend one end into a triangle.
Mate . . .. .
I have a threaded rod sitting around. didnt even think of that. LEDGEND!
still spirits Pure turbo yeast is the best I have used so far but I've tried them all and this is the best one that I've had a very good outcome and best tasting don't youse tomato paste leave bad aftertaste sorry Jessie love the information you keep giving all us patrons pH to 5.2 best results
Another source of nutrient if you make beer is to use the spent grain instead of tomato paste. The spent grain from a 23L batch of beer is enough for a 190L ferment. And the best thing its free!
For sure ! .....I used to make beer. Before I started this haha
Would you just dump the grain in or throw it in within the muslin? If the former, I'd be so worried about all the crap floating around -- and proteins throwing odd flavors around.
@@saltyhashes1781 just chuck the spent grain in. Dump your sugar on top and let it go.
Stuff a stainless scrubbie on the inside of the tap to keep the bits out. They'll floats to the bottom when it's done anyway
not bad flavor. one of the better recipes. cheers!
Use brown sugar and molasses and make some rum. Sugar cane hard to find in most areas.
May do that, but will likely go molasses for rum.
And right now I need that gin ;)
But.....will be a dang good idea to compare molasis only vs brown sugar too.
Cheers my man :)
Try blending dark brown sugar and molasses. You can usually get black strap molasses at a feed and grain for a good price. Sugar cane ain't happnin' around here.
+Steven Wanner man u can use deer licks in a jug it's normally corn or apple flavor but u lose all that in fermentation but it's real malasses I use it because its a lil thinner easy to mix with more sugar
I will do this for my next batch . Cool Video Thinks for all the information .
Great video
I always convert my sugar like George and Bearded do it’s easier for the yeast to eat it and my gravity is in the neighbourhood of 1.090 to 1.100
Can’t wait to see how this turns out
a shame the calculator is down
thanks for the video's! realy helpfull!!
Go the Bar-B-Mate, only tool you'll every need
Hahaha right???
Awesome video! Excited see how it comes out!
Great video buddy I'm fairly new to this distilling lark. I purchased an Air Still just to get started and used the turbo yeast packs as per the Still spirits instructions.
I'm now interested in using the TPW recipe instead.
The question is can I use this TPW wash in the Air Still ? (It mentions only turbo yeasts can be used not to why)
I know readers are going to comment on why bother with the Air Still and upgrade to a proper system but the Air Still is convenient for me.
Thanks again for such a great video its a real help for novices like me.
Pretty certain you'll be fine using tpw in the air still
Typo in the title? ("was" instead of "wash"). Great video though!
other alternative is grind Cheak pea (20 piece per 20 Lt of water and 1 full table spoon of wood ash) Cheak pea provides the nitrogen to yeast and ash gives all other needed stuff ...
Aaah. Stay still. The background moving around is like being drunk on a rollercoaster!
Great video Jessie, just lose the selfie stick as you rock back and forth when you speak (Just like I do) and the background was like being on a boat in 8 foot swells. I too love the chuckles and the fact that you're so honest and relaxed with your approach. It's supposed to be fun, not stressful and you convey that message perfectly. Thanks for sharing your Still It life with the rest of us.
Heh, Yeah I got lazy on this one. Few people gave me the same kick in the pants in regards to the hand held camera ;)
Gotta be having fun! Otherwise whats the point? 😉
I have birdwatchers on my ceiling in the second bath!
You need to get you a paint mixer that you can use on a electric drill to mix everything up.
No paint on a paint mixer when she is new mate . .. . . iof you find a stainless one. But those are a litte on the $$$$ side down under rightr?!
Mortar mixer... spiral with a ring on the bottom to keep the blades from scraping your fermenter.
55 gal total, 100 lbs sugar, 12 oz bread yeast, 48 oz paste, 300 watt aquarium heater @85 degrees F, 7 days, done...
yes . . . .. . . ?
Spoilers
You should do a turbo wash and see how it goes. Then you could make a video and let everybody know why we should or shouldn't use it.
HAHAHAH,
Yeah the thought has been bumping around in my head for sure!
hmmm, I've been using raisins but I think I'll try the tomato paste next time
Many say distilled water is not good for hydrating yeast, apparently the yeast cells might burst from too much water absorbed.
Filtered water my man ;). . . . . Wait. . . Did I say distilled?
You said filtered! :) just got home from work, a little tired.
Hahaha I wondered! Because I had to do that take about three times.....I kept saying distilled hahaha. Was worried I put the wrong one in!
Great video - I’m still quite new to distilling (only done 3 batch es so far ) and new to this channel, I understand the logic behind giving the yeast a wider range of food other than just pure sugar but from other reading I see bread yeast can sometimes not handle the higher sugar content of a 8kg / 23L wash - would using turbo 8 yeast (that is made for higher sugar content) and a higher sugar tomato paste work and does it give the best of both methods?
Projects 101 or just use DADY distiller's yeast
Hey man love the new style of vid great editing kudos, U started off talking about yeast then never told us what sort of yeast you used?
Heh! Whoops!!!
Angel yeast :)
looks like a normal bread yeast.
great video and thanks for sharing your journey angel yeast have many types do you know which one you used
Richard Clarke use bakers yeast
I suppose the best way to check is to run a small batch side by side, 2 x 40L birdwatchers (as they are cheap to make) and use bakers yeast in one and turbo yeast in the other, That way we can check for similarities and differences, Off flavors etc. How do u feel about running an experiment for us dude ? lol
Absolutory. Enjoy. Birdwatcher
Happy Distilling
has anyone ever done a run using "red sauce"? It is garden tomatoes that are processed through a hand food mill and canned for storage.
Hello how much would you discard on a t500 still at the beginning ? 50mls ?
Hey Jesse. Really great video. I'm keen to try this out. I need to scale it down for my 30L still but the link to the calculator isn't working. I'm not sure if the site has moved or closed or maybe it's just because I'm in a different country?
If you have any info on that then please let me know. Thanks
Thanks for the great video.
Been using this for a long long time
And it is the best
But not the way this video is
What brand of yeast did you use? I'm a lazy sod so I just used bottled lemon juice. I premixed the tomato paste, lemon juice in some hot sugar water before adding it to my carboy so i could whisk it into a smooth blend and it mixed easily with the rest of the sugar water.
I believe this was angel yeast
(from memory)
Nice splashy slomos!
Alright Jesse how’s it going? Another quality video!
do you think while I’m slowly, very slowly, building my reflux/pot still keg I should practise this birdwatcher recipe to get the right ferments and stuff like that?
If you have not fermented before you could. Or wait and time it to use for your sacrafice run.
yeah your right, I just want to start doing something while I get the still together 😂 getting itchy feet
good one
I'm not sure you were needed in order for distilling a "real hobby" like you out it. I think it's the viewers you have that make it a real hobby.
Can you do a vid on opening the sugar bag so easy 😂😂😂
How about an elder flower liqueur?
how does that taste after distilling? why did you leave it aside? cause this formula is super easy and ferments to 12% in less than 5 days
Hi im new to your channel. Can you give me the recipe as youd video dosnt show measurements for lemon or salts. Thanks looking forward to making this
Your title has an error Sugar Was not ‘Sugar Wash’ effects searches for it
I have brewed beer and wine and am deeply surprised at how non clean things need to be. Then again I seem to link fermentation temperature to what I can tolerate. With that said, I'm pretty sure that my favorite pet is a champagne yeast,ec113? Not sure what I can contribute at this point but apparently my memory can't retrieve the last digit of that yeast variety
“Sugar loves to eat white sugar “ Made me giggle
What's the theory behind using tomato paste? Could it be substituted for something else? If the neutral was destined for a bourbon, could a corn substitute do the same thing as the tomato paste, rather than doing a proper mash?
It is used for yeast nutrient. A cheap easy solution to that problem.
If I was going to make a burbon I would not make a neutral, I want as much flavour as I can get. But you can still use a sugar wash as the base. Much like UJSSM :)
I know it's 4yrs later, BUT, I've used Weet-Bix, Corn Flakes and Tomato Paste. As above, it's just food for the yeast while it does it's thing, helps the yeast not die as quickly while making alcohol in the wash
Hey mate, yeah I've also been doing cornflake and weet-bix washes for a cheats bourbon. But I have switched my tomato paste nutrients to using berocca instead.@@phizzle24
Hey Jess...nice one...what yeast did you use? Is that in the birdwatcher thread? Chur
This video is pretty old but im just trying vodka for the first time. hopefully I can get and answer. You and the original recipe say lemon to adjust the ph. Nowhere do I see what the ph should be. Are we looking for a ph similar to brewing?
Hi Jesse just watched this one again what yeast do you use for BSW
Birdwatchers wash surely must be good for the actual birdwatchers among us :P I wonder if the recipe was invented by an actual birdwatcher? 😀😝🤭🐦
Another good vid dude, always makes me smile. Wonder what the taste difference between this and FFV is? Just inspired (kicked me up the arse) enough to go mix some up...
Thanks man, and huge props for the Tin Tin profile pic !
Yeah I am fairly interested in that as well! I have a little of the FFV saved away for that ;)
Yeast, dose it matter how much u put in since they multiple. Can u put too much in.?
What do off-flavours in a sugar wash usually/ roughly taste like?
I noticed you use Epsom salt in it, which ain't necessary.
My simple recipe is water, sugar, and yeast. The tomato paste is reduced to a teaspoon full per 10 L.
Ferments dry within a week (depending on the temperature).
Where did you get that giant can of tomato paste Jessie? Also do you recon puree would work as well? Cheers
never seen this before ,looks easy to do .what kind of yeast did you use,,?. thanks for sharing
Yeah sorry man I forgot to include that :(.
Angel yeast
That's correct norbury. Bakers yeast ;). Sorry busy at work hahaha. My comments game slipping!
hey its cool i was thinking you had said before that you use a bakers yeast.. and have seen online that yeast kind of all work the same . but may have a way of a adding some thing to the end . that is the fun of the craft.
Would you have the full recipe? Thanks
thanks for vid!
Thanks for hanging with us :)
Still It no worries! Quick question in one of your videos you made a sugar mash, when you added yeast you just chucked it on the top and closed lid. Is that a thing? You don’t mix the yeast fully just sprinkle it on top? Or was that just for the video haha
About the gravity when pitching. My mead had a 1085 when i started, and i noticed an off taste to it. Even after months of resting. Might that be the reason why?
I'm not a Mead guy sorry mate. I know fermentation is a big thing for it though.
19liter alcohol for how grams tomato paste ?
Check that calculator in the description of this video dude. It will sort out whatever volume you want. . . . . .and I am too much of a muppet to know that on the fly haha.
Tried my first bw,, it foamed up within 12 hrs and working good but now, on 3rd day it looks like it stopped and has a slight vinegar taste,, bout to pour it and start over,, idk?
Nah dude! Don't tip it!
It can easy rip through most of the sugar in 3 days. And it may still be working away without many visible bubbles. Did you take a gravity reading?
Vinegar taste like it's slightly sour?
I would run it man. Don't Chuck it! At least do a strip run :)
Im new to this, thought id give my late father's still a run:-) I just put down 55 litres of this recipe bit struggled to get my SG below 1.080. Any thoughts on weather it will still turn out ok ?
so i bought a still to get started but it is only a 2 Gallon pot.... how do i find out how much ittle make 🤔
How did you like the birdwatcher's recipe as far as end product? I've thought about trying it but usually go with something akin to buccaneer bobs? I'm glad you left the broken spoon in the video, was kind of funny to watch and we've all been there. I use a canoe paddle these days.
Yeah it's good to have around. Nice to just have vodka sometimes. Also nice to be able to make infusions or gin etc.
Can you pitch straight on top of the old yeast cake?
Great video! I am working some birdwatchers right now. I can't really ferment in the 55 gal barrel like you. That's cool. I have to ferment and strip 10 gal at a time.
I am working towards Odin's Easy Gin. I saw you mentioned Gin in one of your replys in the comments here. Is this ferment destined for Odin's Easy Gin?
Awesome man. The plan is to try a few different things on theini still. Odin's will probably be one of them for sure.
I just tried birdwatchers, my fermentation never took off. I followed the calculator for a 7 gallon wash. I accidentally put in a little to much lemon juice and my ph was 3.4 will that effect it? What do I need to do to get the fermentation to start? Any advice would be appreciated. I am fermenting this batch in a fast fermenter. Thank you
How much Epsom salts are used. I work to about 25-30 litres . This will my first time stepping away from Turbo method so I don't want to get it wrong
The original recipe does not use any epsom salts :)
@@industrialkhaos Not sure why you didn't link directly to birdwatchers.info/calculator/, but in your case your cert expired 67 days ago.
u can't find those 55 pound sacks here just the 25 pound sacks but we work with what we can find
.. . . . ..finally . . . .a advantage for New Zealand haha.
But yeah dude. Thats it, work with what you have !
Believe it or not, usually the 25# bags are more than 10# bags. The only thing I can think is that they don't move enough volume, so they actually cost more. It's not just about the commodity price, but everything else. Warehouse clubs (costco / sams) may have the 25# cheaper, but about the same as any other grocery store would have 10's.
Hi you have probably already said this but what yeast do you use?
Ahhhh this was angel yeast. Its a vac pack block of bakers yeast.
Thanks for your reply but what I meant to ask what is your favourite yeast for whiskey? Thanks
B-Roll spoon snap, oh heck!
hi m8 ive just put down two tpw washers i followed a recipe that didnt include the lemon juice can i add it now they have been fermenting for 3 days now
If it's all fermentating away well I would just let it roll as is man :)
Hey guys. I have done 2 of these washes now. Followed instructions to the letter. (Making 25L) 5.6kg Sugar 260g tomato paste 76g brewers yeast and lemon. Yet both of them ever fermented. Was never any sign of life. Both sat around 25 degrees. Was approx 28 from moment yeast was combined. Any help please team
If tomato paste had preservatives will kill the yeast, must be preservative free !
