“Be a good person.” He says it twice. I always told my students that the #1 rule of gigging is “always be nice.” I love that he carries this mantra. Such an amazing person and such an amazing interview. Thank you all!
What an exceptional interview. Ian really lets the musician talk, with pointed and extremely well researched questions and a lack of intervention for his own ego!! Brilliant.
I'm so glad Chris is getting the recognition he deserves finally! We played together in high school (Hey Chris! THC! Tam! Mr Greenwood! Woo!) and he is a great guy, tasty player, and exemplary collaborator.
Chris is a professional in all the word sense, a Rock Star of electric bass without a doubt. From the times of Alanis’ tour over there in the 90’s.🎸✅🎧👍
Such an amazing interview with Chris Chaney. Thank you for highlighting and introducing us to him. I am a fan and so impressed by his humility, his generosity of time and energy. His style is amazing but even more is his character. He is an unsung legend of the bass community.
I love that this interview exists and that Chris is getting recognition. I grew up a huge fan of Eric Avery and he had a big impact on my own playing so when Chaney joined Jane’s I was apprehensive but so pleasantly surprised. He ticked the Eric A vibe box but still put his own slant on Jane’s that was a bit grittier and one I really enjoy. When I saw him play in the early otts with Panic Chanel at The Fine Line I was sold (rocking those Aguilar heads and cabinets). Such a talent but great to see he’s humble, too.
I'm embarrassed to admit that but I never heard about Chris before.. So glad this channel is bringing such legends to public attention. Great guy and a great player as well. I wish he'd got more recognition.
YES! My 16 year old self is leaping with joy! Chris’ name was on every album I owned back in the day. ‘Strays’ was one of those albums that kicked my backside into learning to play with a pick every time I picked my bass up. Thank you guys so much for sharing this 😊🙏
…nothing like a good ol’ 60 PB. Between the Braz slaberoo board, lightweight Alder, pickup wound to the high 11’s and phonebook paper/wax cap - they are just quintessential on so many levels. Excellent interview!
Another great interview folks! 😀 What a gracious and humble fellow! I think I still have an old Bass Player magazine issue where Chris is standing between his two massive effects racks! Wonderful content! Cheers, Brent
I play with the "invisible pick" as well. If you're not familiar than hold a pick like normal then pull it out with your other hand keeping your fingers if holding the pick. Then play with the side of your thump, not your nail, as if holding a pick.
Chris had some shoes to fill in with AC/DC, but he sounds great! Cliff Williams would be really proud. Chris knows all the bass fills and he has the same staccato sound that Cliff brought in the rhythm section. Chris knows what he's doing when he has a bass in his hands. Best wishes, Chris, and congrats!
Chris is the guy! I loved this interview. So humble and nice, and of course...great stories. Got to go back and listen more intently to his work. Bravo SBL.
This is a great Interview, one thing he mentioned was very cool to hear. He was talking about Taylor Hawkins playing with a few people I used to see at the Studio Cafe', Balboa. This was in around 86 or so. He mentioned a guitar player named Gannon Arnold, he was a young good player at the time. The guys he played with were good, loved the Bass player, Melvin Davis. They were always on Thursday. Tuesday, John Pattitucci was there, I was lucky to have such good talent to see without a hassle. Loved seeing Melvin in "Coming to America", Sexual Chocolate.
Please tell me he has a down side, come on, he's a terrific player, kind person, so humble, always ready to praise other's work, can't believe he's so down to earth while being a legend, that's true greatness, I loved this interview so much!!!
Thank you for another great interview. This is my first exposure to Chris and I am so impressed with his down-to-earth style. This is the 2nd video I've watched with hosts Ian AND Sharon. Sharon seems to be left out of the conversation in both videos. How about giving her voice, questions and comments some air time?
What a phenomenal conversation. I'd love for ya'll to connect with Sarah Lee - another one of those players who just kept popping up in band after band
Hey SBL you should make a video about Pedro Aznar, he's a very very talented bass player, multi-instrumentalist, composer from Argentina. He's played in an Argentinian group called Serú Girán. I'd really like if you could make a video about him, he's absolutely amazing
Sold my ‘75 Guild M85ii cos I wasn’t working immediately after Covid. Immediate sellers remorse. Unbelievable piece of kit. Had a set of unused 70’s half-flats in the case when I first bought it, which I put on it. Dammit.
My band in LA opened for Camp Freddy a few times at the Roxy. Someone stole a few items that I set down onstage right in front of me when I wasn’t looking. Crazy that that was a thing…
Do you ever feel that as a bassist, we’re all in coolest club on planet earth?? This interview just cements my already entrenched views 😊 Like a secret society hiding in plain sight, feckin’ love it. We need a secret handshake
I got lost with the ‘53 P bass story.. Eddie Vedder got him the gig bag, where did the bass come from, Dave Boonshoft? Eddie Vedder is the most awesome guy. He was in the studio working his own project while a project I was working on was being mastered and he had a lot of good things to say. He ended up getting the first copy of that record we made.
Chris Chaney is a Fckn Sweetheart!! Known him for 30 odd yrs…Underrated like so many others!!
Rex brown PJ pickup and preamp in my 71 P bass "with a jazz bridge pickup" is the best thing ever ..... thank you
hey man love your body of work, always a big fan
Just curious.. did you ever get that 5 minutes alone?
“Be a good person.” He says it twice. I always told my students that the #1 rule of gigging is “always be nice.” I love that he carries this mantra. Such an amazing person and such an amazing interview. Thank you all!
did you catch timestamps each time?
What an exceptional interview. Ian really lets the musician talk, with pointed and extremely well researched questions and a lack of intervention for his own ego!! Brilliant.
🧡🧡🧡
Holy freakin moly please get more players of this era on the show PLEASE! I could listen to Chris ALL DAY. Killed it. Another great episode.
Chris is so grounded and such a kind and gentle human being. I love him.
Should fit perfectly into AC/DC
I'm so glad Chris is getting the recognition he deserves finally! We played together in high school (Hey Chris! THC! Tam! Mr Greenwood! Woo!) and he is a great guy, tasty player, and exemplary collaborator.
Chris is a professional in all the word sense, a Rock Star of electric bass without a doubt. From the times of Alanis’ tour over there in the 90’s.🎸✅🎧👍
💯💯💯
What a great guy, humble, creative, and full of awesome stories and wisdom
💯💯💯
Chaney is THE UNDERCOVER BASS ICON! I had no idea but I am a huge fan. What a great guy!
Such an amazing interview with Chris Chaney. Thank you for highlighting and introducing us to him. I am a fan and so impressed by his humility, his generosity of time and energy. His style is amazing but even more is his character. He is an unsung legend of the bass community.
There are next to no interviews/discussions that I watch all the way through. This one? 100%. Worth every minute! Pure gold.
I love that this interview exists and that Chris is getting recognition. I grew up a huge fan of Eric Avery and he had a big impact on my own playing so when Chaney joined Jane’s I was apprehensive but so pleasantly surprised. I absolutely loved his work on Jane's Addiction's Strays. Brutal tone and outstanding playing. The man is utterly solid.
I'm embarrassed to admit that but I never heard about Chris before.. So glad this channel is bringing such legends to public attention. Great guy and a great player as well. I wish he'd got more recognition.

Great job on the Interview..
Love Chris Chaney 🎶🎶
Scott’s Bass continues to Roll!
I love how personable this conversation was, what a bunch of legends!
…nothing like a good ol’ 60 PB. Between the Braz slaberoo board, lightweight Alder, pickup wound to the high 11’s and phonebook paper/wax cap - they are just quintessential on so many levels. Excellent interview!
🧡🧡🧡
This has to be one of the best videos SBL has done. I could listen to him talk all day.
I just love Chris Chaney. Thanks for a Great interview 🙌
Glad you enjoyed it!!
This was wonderful. What a great guy Chris is. Thoroughly enjoyed every second of this 🙂
I have a DB359, DB659, DB680, and a DB728 that I love and have owned since the late 90's, early 20's. I love the early Aguilar all-tube gear.
💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
🔥🔥🔥
Another great interview folks! 😀 What a gracious and humble fellow! I think I still have an old Bass Player magazine issue where Chris is standing between his two massive effects racks! Wonderful content! Cheers, Brent
SO excited for this! Became a Chris Chaney fan through being a Taylor Hawkins/Foo fan.
I play with the "invisible pick" as well. If you're not familiar than hold a pick like normal then pull it out with your other hand keeping your fingers if holding the pick. Then play with the side of your thump, not your nail, as if holding a pick.
What a lovely man! We definitely need to see that bass collection! And speaking of a legend we need John Paul Jones on ASAP!!
Thanks Ian & Shaz & of course Chris ! Wow, Chris is such a lovely, humble guy & consummate, encyclopedic, talented bassist ! Great interview !
Great interview folks! Class act. I loved "just be a good person". Chris Chaney is the man.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, be a good person is excellent advice!
Didn't know Chaney did that Sara Bareilles album. I love that album!!! All the tunes are great and the production is great as well.
What a great interview, and what a humble, amazingly talented human being.
🧡🧡🧡

Wonderful interview! Chris is such an amazing guy, and sneakily prolific. Thank you!
Thanks to both of you young lads. I enjoyed this.
Brilliant interview, genuine humble guy, incredibly versatile player. SBL team, the quality of the content you guys are putting out is exceptional..
Chris is the guy! I loved this interview. So humble and nice, and of course...great stories. Got to go back and listen more intently to his work. Bravo SBL.
He's awesome, it was a pleasure to have him come in for an interview!!
Legend.... cant wait for this
Another great interview! I really enjoyed hearing all the stories and insight. Thanks!
This is so good. Chris Channy is a bass god and complete gentleman. 🙌
💯💯💯
Awesome editing and function of the interview guys. Really really cool to have that discussion while looking at material.
Oh wow, what a great interview, you guys are the interview kings.
Glad you enjoyed it!! More to come!
Chris is awesome!
I hate that I cannot like a video more than 1 times. This is one of those that one like is just not enough.
Much respect Mr. Chaney! Great bassist
🧡🧡🧡
yes, please a detailed bass collection.

Cheers, glad you're enjoying them!!
Need a Bass Tales with Chris!
Yes!!
Bass Collection!!!! 🤘😜Lets go!
Jane's is one of my favorites of all time. I seen them with Chris like 10xs.
What a superb musician and what a superb career he has had!
Please tell me he has a down side, come on, he's a terrific player, kind person, so humble, always ready to praise other's work, can't believe he's so down to earth while being a legend, that's true greatness, I loved this interview so much!!!
Bob Daisley!! You don't hear many people reference him, would LOVE to see him interviewed. Chaney is such a beast of a player.
Terrific interview. Really enjoyed it. Thanks to the three of you.
He replaced Cliff in acdc and he’s doing a killer job!!!
I saw Chris Chaney with Janes Addiction in Paradiso, Amsterdam ages ago, what a concert!
🔥🔥🔥
His p tone is something else! And what a real bass nerd 🤓 and overall nice guy in addition to being a great player
One of my all time favorites. Guy is killer.
Thank you for another great interview. This is my first exposure to Chris and I am so impressed with his down-to-earth style. This is the 2nd video I've watched with hosts Ian AND Sharon. Sharon seems to be left out of the conversation in both videos. How about giving her voice, questions and comments some air time?
that was great, thank you guys!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Chris sporting the Edens!!! Nice. I still use mine every gig.
29:09
I like her questions the best!😀
I love this channel !!!!!
So Enjoyable, Thank You!
Great interview. Chris Chaney is the best
Top video. Greetz from the Netherlands. Chris is a fantastic bass player 💪💪💪🎶
See you with AC/DC in Amsterdam Chris!🤟🎸🎶
He must be the sweetest guy in the business! I had an instant man-crush after seeing this interview!
Great episode guys! 👏 👍🏻
Chaney’s tone all across the ‘Strays’ album is just so on point it hurts. It’s THE rock P Bass tone!
🔥🔥🔥
I need to see the collection of basses
What a phenomenal conversation.
I'd love for ya'll to connect with Sarah Lee - another one of those players who just kept popping up in band after band
Dang, that Bottle it Up Is a jam
Wow great 👍 interview! So much great 👍 info always.
Glad you enjoyed this one!!
great guy one of the best interviews ever awesome 👏 👏 🤩 🤩 🤩
🧡🧡🧡
What a great interview
🧡🧡🧡
Great interview. Loved it!!
PLEASE consider doing these interviews with international bass players, for example from Brasil!
What a nice genuine person and obviously a great musician.
None of that fake LA rockstar attitude
First episode i’ve watched from start to finish.
Hey SBL you should make a video about Pedro Aznar, he's a very very talented bass player, multi-instrumentalist, composer from Argentina. He's played in an Argentinian group called Serú Girán. I'd really like if you could make a video about him, he's absolutely amazing
Pedro is an amazing force in the Pat Metheny Group… and he isn’t even playing bass!
I second that! One of the most well-rounded musicians in the world, not kidding.
That was fabulous!! Thx u!
Sold my ‘75 Guild M85ii cos I wasn’t working immediately after Covid. Immediate sellers remorse. Unbelievable piece of kit. Had a set of unused 70’s half-flats in the case when I first bought it, which I put on it. Dammit.
Loved this
My band in LA opened for Camp Freddy a few times at the Roxy. Someone stole a few items that I set down onstage right in front of me when I wasn’t looking. Crazy that that was a thing…
Thank you was an amazing song.
Seems like such a nice, genuine fella. :)
He really is :)
JUST BECAUSE !!!!❤
born same year as me holy fuck this guys insane
Can you guys PLEASE do a deep dive on Phil Lesh? He plays unlike any other bassist, his style is wholly unique to the Grateful Dead.
Do you ever feel that as a bassist, we’re all in coolest club on planet earth?? This interview just cements my already entrenched views 😊 Like a secret society hiding in plain sight, feckin’ love it. We need a secret handshake
This is really good...
Great guy!
He's as good as they get .
Awesome ❤❤❤❤
So glad that Chris is touring with AC/DC. Perfect replacement for Cliff! 👍🤟🎸
You need to do a Carol Kaye interview
He Gunna have to park all that creativity for a bit while he tour with AC/DC 😅
I got lost with the ‘53 P bass story.. Eddie Vedder got him the gig bag, where did the bass come from, Dave Boonshoft?
Eddie Vedder is the most awesome guy. He was in the studio working his own project while a project I was working on was being mastered and he had a lot of good things to say. He ended up getting the first copy of that record we made.
I've done the same thing for years. Can get some really nice tone changes through songs.
Is Chris Chaney the nicest, humblest guy in the world? It certainly seems so. What a guy!
He's great, and that's part of the reason (along with being a killer player) that people want to work with him!
I guess i am right about my statement, he is sort of a Tony Hawk of the bass world :)
Очень круто 🎸🎸🎸 Спасибо!!! 🤘🤘🤘
