Onew's Falsetto It's a huge sustain but I feel like he strained a bit. Onew sang better than this before the surgery.
Jonghyun is the best vocalist in SM, but his only problem with his voice was that he didn't trusted he was. When he had the right amount of confidence that is his trademark, he could fill up evrry single millimeter of any arena with his chest and head. Onew is trying very hard to put into Shinee a similar light but it's impossible to copy Jonghyun's vocal presence. Once you stay in front of the stage in a shinee show you understand how and why Jonghyun is the main vocalist in Shinee. It's something that Nothing. Nobody will never be able to substitute or copy.
It's an absurd hole of absence because it was just an immense burst of light and power on stage.
And still. Light and power.
This all is a nightmare.

I rarely hear or notice Onew use a lot of vibrato with his singing. I think technique-wise Key and Taemin uses vibrato the most when they sing (amongst all SHINee members). But his voice is so unique and so smooth. In my opinion the most unique and notable voice in kpop!
Onew, before his operation, used a lot of vibrato but after that, I rarely heard him put him vibrato. For SHINee members, Jonghyun and Taemin, especially Taemin, uses it a lot.

My fav part besides you actually looking into Onew and SHINee, my fav part is you nodding as if approving and encouraging. Love your reaction.
Onew is one of the best vocalists. He has "honey voice" (I think it is made up term just for him, a descriptive, not 100% sure tho). Few things:
1. Let's not forget he is pop singer (R&B to be precise)and he sang this piece
2. He actually is the owner of the LONGEST note in kpop live (song "friend") that is over 40 seconds long. Speak about control and lung captivity. I was out of breath just watching that
3. He has great range and can sing rock songs as well (was in musical "rock of ages" in Korea as Andrew)
4. He has very unique and controlled voice, so many that are not even his or SHINee fans recognise it
I am beyond happy you looked him up and I hope to see you more delving into SHINee.
And I also have to mention that your reactions and analysis if live performances becoming my favourite thing. I love your input on it and everyday as I see new video I get sooooo exited. You forgot to add that Onew has great warmth to his voice -- he conveys emotion so beautifully, without bombast or overwrought dramatics. This quality he shares with the incomparable jonghyun . Two singers who sang/sing to communicate and express what it is to be alive.
I'm italian and I'm a big fan of Onew (and of course Shinee) and I'm really happy about this performance… I know that the most important thing is the technique but the accent… how he put his effort to show the right feeling of this song… It is really a big thing cause you can be the best vocalist but if don't show passion, especially with italian song you will lose a LOT.
I really appreciate in this video and in Others Sam how you are honest and nice on how to express a vocal opinion, I really like your video a lot.

One of the many reasons why SHINee will always stand out is that Onew and Jonghyun's voices are so distinct and technically honed. Another notable thing about Onew is his amazing stability. No one can be flawless 100% of the time, but I don't think I've ever heard his voice falter in all the live stages I've watched.
P.S. Love all your reactions and analyses, Sam! If you haven't seen BTOB singing with surprise microphone effects, I highly recommend it. It's hilarious but also surprisingly impressive. Park Hyo Shin singing Wildflower on Yu Huiyeol's Sketchbook is (IMO) the best version. If you choose to react to this amazing performer, you might find the story of his voice issues relevant/interesting. As to Onew, his voice, famously, cracks (he is charming about it), possibly why he dropped it a bit.

Yes! You and I share the same sensibility. I just can't get behind Ysi fuera ella as the song to go to to appreciate the genius and originality of Jonghyun. Elevator is masterful -- in three minutes he sings a life story as well as the human condition -- longing, loneliness, despair -- emotions we all contend with. And his voice is utterly unique and gorgeous. And Crazy a great choice too!
daysjours indeed a masterpiece! One of my all time favorite songs from him, it’s so full of emotion, a stunning song.
I have a lot of respect for many performers and many KPop artists because I know they're talented and hardworking, and even those whose technique or overall vocal sound I don't dig, I know that my own singing is nowhere near theirs. But personally, to my ear, Jinki's voice is simply the most beautiful in all of Kpop. It's just very authentic in the way he doesn't "put on" his singing voice. It sounds the same when he talks and when he sings, and rather than having a "Kpop voice" like so many talented (and sometimes a little less talented) idols do, Jinki has his own unique timbre (I hope I've used this word right). I like how in most cases (NOT Lucifer) he sounds so effortless. The way he accentuates his singing with different emotions I like as well - when he adds a feeling of irony, or sweetness, or sadness, you can hear it instantly. I enjoy listening to Taemin and Key's singing too, but I would say that they convey the emotions through the volume and tension, whereas in Jinki's case it's like his voice has colors for each "season" - even though his sound is so consistent. Anyway, thanks a lot for this video and others too, I feel that I've learned some important things~

I am so touched and happy that a vocal teacher reacting to Onew's Nessun Dorma!! Sometimes I felt that he is not being attributed to much on his vocal capabilities as most will say that he has a chocolate warm voice. But those who is a fan of SHINee and especially Onew bias will know how talented he is.
Since I've known SHINee and kpop idols in general in 2009, I have always thought that Onew is one of the best singers out there and the only voice that can reach my heart deeply. I love his voice, I love him!
Honestly your obvious passion for music is inspiring and your honest reactions are everything. I also noticed right away that most other said music teachers/vocal coaches don’t seem to be able to find the notes they are singing. You can and do and it is astonishing how easily and accurately you are finding the notes. I checked ‘Nessun dorma’ by a number of other tenors. Very few sang vincerò with the O. It must be very difficult to achieve. Of the ones I listened to, I think only Gigli did it. Even Pavarotti finished with more of an A than an O. I found Onew’s interpretation very moving - more than some others more famous for the aria. The lack of vibrato was rather refreshing and resounded with me emotionally. Some versions I listened to, I realised were triumphs of vocal gymnastics but resulted in losing the soul of the piece. Onew’s and Gigli’s renditions brought me to my feet; not so much the others.

I won't deny that for me Jonghyun was and is one of the most amazing singers out there
Lewi Hemms I’m not familiar enough with Kyuhyun’s solo vocals to have an opinion, but Jonghyun is my ultimate bias in kpop, so I’m not very impartial when it comes to his voice. I’ve only really ever listened to Sorry, Sorry as far as Suju songs go, and there’s so much auto-tune that it’s hard to hear what his voice really sounds like

I feel you, this song always gives me goosebumps when performed correctly. Onew did a good job. I also like his performance of Rainy Blue with Taemin on piano. Onew and Jonghyun used to do live radio duets that sounded really good also.

I was super-impressed when I saw you starting to sing with silently, I don't think I see many other reactors do that. For me this is lovely because a) he's a Korean singing in a language that has a totally different way that you have to think in it (even if he just learnt it phonetically), and b) it seems that he has a really rich brassy kind of tone to his voice almost? I'm reminded of trumpets when I hear him singing.

This is one of my most favorite arias and for me does not matter who is singing, it is beautiful every time. I do have to admit that SHIINee is my favorite group out of all the genres I listen to. I always found Onew's vocals amazing. I know everyone loved Jonghyun vocals, but Onew's vocals so unique and powerful. Onew when he sings brings so much emotion, just a breathtaking vocalist. I will buy his solo album and wait for him after military.
