This was the best luggage comparison video I've seen - succinct and to the point, yet thorough, with helpful angles and well compositioned video clips to illustrate points. Please continue!
You've given a succinct but comprehensive evaluation of both of these similar bags. I do think another advantage of the Monos is that it weighs a pound less. Thanks for your review.
I really appreciate this review. I felt confident in which I’d prefer by the end of the video and I’ve never had that experience watching a review before. Thank you for the clear and concise review.
I am obsessed with Monos. I have their backpack which I use on every trip. I always get so many compliments about it. Looking to get the carry on and large travel luggage next.
My Monos bag broke after one trip. The part that slips into the lock broke. How you ask? Who knows. I had to check it, and it returned to me that way. It took multiple emails and a chat session (they do not have a phone number......) to get a new zipper mailed to me. Right.....I will need to replace the zipper myself. "we will give you detailed instructions, its easy!" per customer service. Seriously? My Away bag has been to multiple countries, pulled over cobble stones, checked over and over, dragged onto trains, put in back of vehicles and never broke. While I like the design of the Monos bag.....I am not confident it will survive.
i did some research and MONO's 100 days trial and return policy is super different. This is Mono's "Please note that our 100-day trial is voided if your suitcase has been used in transit. Pack it up and roll it around your house to get a feel for it, but unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on suitcases that are in unsale-able condition. The shipping cost of return will be deducted from your total refund." YOU HAVE TO PAY TO RETURN THE LUGGAGE TO CANADA~~
From Away website [11/26/23]: We are only able to accept returns on unused items, so please gently test your products at home before traveling with them.
This makes me want to travel lol. I been using my osprey backpack , but sometimes I feel like investing in a more durable and structured rolling luggage , this may very well be on my watch list when that time comes 👍 aesthetics look very sleek for both . Great comparison, but definitely a stronger case for the monos
Thanks for letting me know. The website wasn't that detailed. Good to know they are very similar for the most part. It's really up to personal preference at the end of the day.
BIGGEST DIFFERENCE: (and dealbreaker for me) Monos 100 day trial period is only unused unlike Away: “Please note that our 100-day trial is voided if your suitcase has been used in transit. Pack it up and roll it around your house to get a feel for it, but unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on suitcases that are in unsale-able condition.”
From Away website [11/26/23]: We are only able to accept returns on unused items, so please gently test your products at home before traveling with them.
Monos carry on size: Exterior measurements: 22" × 14" × 9" Away carry on size: Exterior measurements 21.7" x 13.7" x 9" Air France: The maximum dimensions of your hand baggage are: 55 x 35 x 25 cm/21.6 x 13.7 x 9.8 in
@@EricTMeraki This becomes more important once packed and flying internationally though. I’ve had some airlines actually have you try to fit it into the carry-on measurement bin before making you check it. Mono wouldn’t make it, because “it needs to fit without you forcing it.”
Monos, Away, July, Beis (probably more) are all made by the same company for different vendors. I have both July and Monos, other than a few slight differences both are identical. They come in identical fancy cardboard boxes with a nice luggage dust/scratch cover when not in use. 3-5 different companies, same luggage, same team and from my experience, the same crappy customer service. Better off buying something from Ross department store for a 3rd of the costs. JMO.
Great video. I just pulled the plug on the Monos and I got the compression cubes as well. Did a test pack for a quick upcoming trip and I am pretty impressed.
I have both Away (carry on) and Monos (checked). From my experience the Away is far superior. I've traveled on at least 50 flights with the Away and it looks like new. We did a single domestic flight with the Monos and it is trashed. It scuffs and scratches very easily. In the same flight we checked a cheap Samsonite bag and it did not suffer the same date so can't chalk it up to baggage handling. Other reviews of terrible customer service are very true. Stay away from Monos and stick with Away!
I first ordered the Away carryon. I was disappointed to find that the lining on one side was too tight which meant all the space couldn’t be utilized. Away told me it was designed that way! I returned it and ordered the Monos. Great decision!!
I got the monos medium check in a couple years ago during their Black Friday sale. I loved it so much I then got the Monos carry on plus during another sale. Very happy with both
@@EricTMeraki I just purchased one today from Monos, glad I did, then saw your review. I did everything backwards! But glad your review help give me the satisfaction of making the purchase.
I've taken around 10 trips with my Monos carry-on plus in the past two years, and it has stood up to all kinds of abuse with no issues whatsoever. It actually even still looks pretty new - when cleaned up with that eraser sponge, you wouldn't even really notice that it's been used except for the wheels.
Hard to decide between the 2. Monos seems like a better overall choice but i keep hearing how bad the customer service is and you have to pay to even return it back. Wish you could do a beis carry on review as well. Trying to decide between these 3
Beis warranty is really bad. Monos and Away have lifetime warranties for the life of the purchaser but beis warranty is for the “reasonable life of the luggage” which is who knows how long. I emailed back and forth with beis and they could not answer how long the reasonable life of the luggage is. Basically their “lifetime” warranty can expire whenever beis feels like it which is so misleading and sketchy!
It's mentioned in the video as usb powered charger. Thanks for watching. Those battery pack is useful though but it's annoying that airliners make you remove it before flights at least from my experience.
They're durable but will scruff up from normal wear and tear. You can buff it out with the cleaning sponge that comes with it for most scratches though. None of these suitcases are truly scratch resistant especially if they are aiming to be lightweight. You will get a strong resistance to impact though which is more important than just some blemishes that may pop up after usage.
I really don't travel that much however i like them,so i will just have to sacrifice & purchase both of them 😃 & this definitely was an awesome review 👏

This definitely seems like a biased review, particularly when comparing the handle wabble. The Away handle has less wobble, but they are noticeably being harder on the suitcase to make it look like there's more. They said the Monos had no wobble, but it objectively does.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I only noticed Monos had less of a wobble from my experience. They obviously both still wobble, but nothing too dramatic or a deal breaker.
There should be movement in the handle, Away’s moves just like Rimowa’s handles. Stiff handles may appear sturdier but they are actually more prone to breaking.
I think a major area that is not covered here is customer service. I have heard and read very bad things about Monos in this regard, while I’ve heard/read nothing but glowing reviews of Away’s customer service. If anything goes wrong with your bag, this could be a key differentiator. I too prefer the look of Monos, but I like an expansion feature, which for some reason Monos opted not to offer, and I don’t trust the customer service issue. Great video, super helpful! Kinda random question, but how are the compression systems between the two? Did you feel like one was any better than the other or are they about the same? I'm a chronic over-packer so I feel like the compression system would be important for me lol
Completely helped me make my decision, I had basically decided but you helped me confirm it. I’ll be using your affiliate code! I do have one question, I love the white but my concern is how dirty it will get with each flight, have you had markings or tough stains that make it impossible to clean since purchasing? That would be Ideal to know, thank you! (I know scuffs and what not are impossible to prevent, but I’m talking more about like stains or minor scuff markings that can come off with cleaning products or magic erasers?)
Most scuffs you will be able to remove with the little sponge scrub that comes with the suitcase. I honestly haven't had any tough stains but I also tend to not keep it close to me when I'm eating or drinking though. I think you'll be fine but it is definitely going to scuff after a trip from normal wear and tear. I think it adds some character to your suitcase if it looks like its been used lol.
@@EricTMeraki aaahhh I see, and yes I plan to not stain it myself 😂😂! Okay that makes me feel better, I love the character it adds too (initially I wanted away because I wanted their aluminum luggage, but it was WAY WAY WAY too expensive I just couldn’t justify at the moment) I also was like what if gets super gross looking after a couple flights? @@EricTMeraki oh I got a hybrid carry-on and the large checked in white so the scuffs will definitely happen but I do hope it’s more travel memory scuffs and not gross stains! But still looking forward to my new suitcases!
It's fine. I just came back from Calgary on WestJet. Trust me, no one in any airline cares enough to measure. All carry on look identical to each other that an inch difference won't matter.
Has anyone had any issues with westjet or aircanada's overhead bins? I'm leaning towards monos but according to wj and ac the dimensions are 1 inch too big
Air Canada has smaller carry on dimensions than Westjet unfortunately .. I noticed on the Away website they have chart indicating which airlines accept which of their carryon models. Hope this helps
Has anyone had any issues with domestic flights with the carry on plus sizes? I fly SW, Delta, and United a lot and I don’t want to have to worry about them constantly scrutinizing my bag and making me check it.
Compare the dimensions to the carry on version. It shouldn't be that much bigger. I only have the carry one and it fits extremely well on all over heads. No hassles from any of the airlines.
I've never had any issues with domestic flights and my Away bigger carry on - I usually fly United. I don't think anyone has ever mentioned I had to check it because it was too big. I've tested it in their suitcase checker before and it's a snug fit but it fits so no one should give you trouble.
I’ve had to check in my Away bigger carryon on some small aircrafts. But 95% of the times I’ve had no issues, and I’ve flown a bunch of national and international airlines with it
You didn’t address the fact that away has retail locations that you can see the product ahead of time and also return it for service at those locations. It should be a consideration of customer support.
@@EricTMerakiAway has retail locations in many major US cities, as well as London and Toronto. Monos had 2 retail locations, both in Canada-not ideal for US customers.
I haven't flown that airline but have for others who have similar size requirements and there was never any issues. They never made me measure it though but half an inch is practically nothing. The whole point of the measurement requirement is so it fits in the overhead bin. Those bins are built with an inch or 2 extra space so it will definitely fit.
@@EricTMeraki A repair my bag if anything happens it’s great the whole time I recommended it to everyone away is the best. They send a replacement part the next day
As far as I can tell, over time, they essentially morphed into same suitcase, with slight styling differences. In a way, that means that the suitcases are basically refined to their best selves, so picking based on looks or customer service makes the most sense.
dude, you failed to show the most important aspect of a luggage, how the wheels work and thus their quality. All you did was fiddle with them. No one tests wheels by fiddling with them. Even a child knows that.
I would never buy this type of design for a carry on because I often need to get into my bag especially on long flights. Therefore I want a carry on which is designed for easy access while it is in the overhead locker, with a side pocket for getting stuff or replacing stuff. This design of case is very impractical as it has to be opened up on a large surface.
Lol this was just my experience. Most videos never pick a true winner when comparing. They're both good though don't get me wrong, I just felt Monos was better in certain categories.

But 95% of the times I’ve had no issues, and I’ve flown a bunch of national and international airlines with it
anybody know about the away carry on for Aircanada ?
No issues for AC.
Hi would you mind comparing them with beis carry on too? Thank you!
Thanks for watching. If I get the opportunity to I will.
@@EricTMeraki thank you so much!

Which colourway is the Monos? Is this the Stellar White or Desert Taupe? Sometimes they look similar in pics
White
You didn’t address the fact that away has retail locations that you can see the product ahead of time and also return it for service at those locations. It should be a consideration of customer support.
The retai locations are not as common as you think. Their main customer base is online.
@@EricTMerakiAway has retail locations in many major US cities, as well as London and Toronto. Monos had 2 retail locations, both in Canada-not ideal for US customers.
I’m thinking about buying the monos carry on. Has anyone flown Aer Lingus? The bag is a half inch over and I wonder if I will be ok
@@EricTMeraki ok awesome! Cause I like the monos over away and this is the one I wanted to buy. I was hoping the half inch wouldn’t hurt. Thank you!
I find that the away looks much better

That one I commented above should work.
What countries are these made in? Are they both made in China?
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure which country they are manufactured in. There's a chance it's China or somewhere else.
I know that Monos manufactures its suitcases in Vancouver, Canada
Says “Hinomoto” on the Away wheel.
My wording was a little confusing there but yeah that is correct. I should have worded it better.
Away stopped selling their USB charger option. It wasn’t selling.
This is an old video. Thanks for the update.
👍. Good for travel and the good price too 👍
Sum this up for you monos is better.
could be better if actually testing the two but decent review
It’s not even a competition away all the way
Thanks for watching! They are both great honestly. Just depends on each person's preferences.

Shame the Monos shipping to Australia is $800. Lol what a joke.
Yeah not worth it at that shipping cost.
I bought monos carry on and check in medium, they’re both VERY WOBBLY! I’m pretty disappointed.
Thanks for sharing your experience
@@EricTMeraki does yours wobble?
My Away wobbles more but they do both wobble. Nothing too bad though.
@@EricTMeraki ok cool
They should “wobble”. Rimowa’s are the same way. Stiff handles with no give make them more likely to break. The wobble is intentional.
Monos is flimsy plastic - I returned it before I used it. Beware of the hidden $40 return fee.
👍
MONOS 🙌🏽
👍
As far as I can tell, over time, they essentially morphed into same suitcase, with slight styling differences. In a way, that means that the suitcases are basically refined to their best selves, so picking based on looks or customer service makes the most sense.
I like the extra zipper compartment on the Monos lol but essentially they are very similar.
also adding that monos has vegan details vs. away that uses leather. So far me- monos is way better already because of that! :)
Yep, can't forget those additional details as well. Thanks!
I understand your opinions are probably moral-adjacent, which is fine, but I'd like to point out leather is far more durable.

Yeah it depends on your location

Holy s*. I had to speed up your video to 1.5x speed. You take so long to say what needs to be said.
Lol my video is actually shorter than most of the similar carry-on comparisons. Thanks for watching Philip.
dude, you failed to show the most important aspect of a luggage, how the wheels work and thus their quality. All you did was fiddle with them. No one tests wheels by fiddling with them. Even a child knows that.
Thanks for watching 😃. If the wheels had any issues. I would've called them out. I think they're great for both luggages.

Possibly, it could be region locked. I've seen that with other promo codes too. It was working when I last checked though.

Hello small bag Haw mach

I would never buy this type of design for a carry on because I often need to get into my bag especially on long flights. Therefore I want a carry on which is designed for easy access while it is in the overhead locker, with a side pocket for getting stuff or replacing stuff. This design of case is very impractical as it has to be opened up on a large surface.
The monos pro version of the suitcase has a front company for easy access items. My latest video covers it.
Horrible product and customer service. Overpriced, not durable. Do NOT buy MONOS.
Thanks for sharing your opinion
Geeez dude, bias much.
Lol this was just my experience. Most videos never pick a true winner when comparing. They're both good though don't get me wrong, I just felt Monos was better in certain categories.
