Wait a minute, there has to be metal underneath the whole o-ring to achieve good water sealing as well. That's not a good construction from Seiko. Is just waiting for trouble even when it was new...
Thank you again for this valuable content. It may save someone’s valuable timepiece. I will relay this information to my customers.
Spot on !
You make these vids educational and funny.
I never thought of the temperature differential 'twixt the h2O and the watch is immersed!
Correction. It is not that when the seal rubber is of good quality that the watch stays water proof for a long time. It stays waterproof for a long time when it is silicone and not rubber. If you have an old watch change the rubber to modern silicone gaskets to keep it safe.
Hello Kalle, its an honor to say hello to you, I'm watching and enjoying with all the youtube videos, i'm not a watchmaker just a watch afficionado, and recently i was replacing some rubber orings on my watches, and I would like to know more about gaskets, i know that some watches have the rubber circular black ones, some are square black ones but there are also those red plastic ones,
I know that you could search for the oring part of each watch model to find the right one.
but I think that if it possible if you could do a video to know more about them or if its possible to use rubber ones when the watch has those plastic ones or viceversa if the red plastic are better.
Its a suggestion to make a video on that or if you or someone here could send me a link where we all can read more about it
anyway Keep doing those amazing and funny videos. I am learning a lot with them
CHEERS
As we Aussies say "Bugger..ey, things happen"!
Kalle, you are so good at explaining the cause and effect of issues in watches. Thanks you!!! Keeping you and your father in my thoughts.
Thank you for the video and I never thought of the temp change and how if effects the watch and creating a vacuum in the watch. Great information
I hope my vintage Seiko doesnt look like this... im sending it in soon!
Ahhh... This Seiko doesn't have the seal installed in the correct position😨 Originally, the seal should be set in the outer groove, so it may have been incorrectly serviced in the past.
I do my very best to remember when closing a watch for the last time before calling it finished "stem then seal"
Poor Seiko :( Maybe it could survive as long as the O-ring was ok :o
Always some excellent advice Kalle, waterproofing a watch is essential, badly most of people doesn’t pay for watch maintenance and it’s so important. Thanks to share those information it’s always interesting !
Best regard from Canada !!
Awesome video as always! 🔥
bedankt Kale voor de goede uitleg...
Great information for the masses!
Thank you!👍
Kalle my experience over time is the worst killer of watches is the HOT TUB Hot chlorine and who knows what soaps, oils and perfumes. I always on invoices recommends NO HOT TUBS! Respect your watch do not wash it to death.😵💫
Sure would be fun to see a Jenny styled diver watch get maintenance! 😍These were pre-2824(ETA), but with more elegant movement!
Thanks for the info Kalle, Also don't forget to check the rubber O-ring (if there is any) in the crown...
Jewellers say it won't be waterproof after a battery because they cannot guarantee that it is without testing it. This is to cover themselves if it does leak. Would you yourself replace a battery without pressure testing the watch for water resistance after the battery replacement?
"The horror... the... horror."
Are you talking about the stem-tube or something, because the crown and stem are isolated from the gasket on the back, and I see that sort of a nick from sloppy tool use most often?
The one thing I got tired of in watch servicing and repair was explaining the difference between waterproof and water resistance. Watch owners need to understand the parameters of hot/ cold, pressure testing in laboratory conditions but to be fair to Rolex their watches paid my mortgage.
Kalle a touch of rusty musty sea water. Omega seals had a tendency of seal break down going very gooi if seals look ok I always us silicone grease up
Oh dear, I never assume a vintage watch to be water proof, or even water resistant. Doing the dishes is the closest my watches may get to water!
tension
I recommend unless you have a recently tested divers watch do not take swimming and the WORST killer of watches is A HOT TUB even divers watches DIE😵
