- John’s eight-year stint with legendary rock band, Head East, put him on the map in terms of his career-the band was celebrated for its raw energy and swagger. John’s career seemed set, but it all came to a distressing end in 1980 when he was let go by the band. The reason: John had an out-of-control drug and alcohol addiction. In 1986, he joined the Christian rock group Petra. This time, however, he was focused, and armed with a powerful message: Jesus Christ is alive and through Him we are to be victorious in His perfect plan for us. Twenty years late, John is a man who lives for Jesus and makes no bones about his faith. Catch his interview and performance here on Huckabee!

At age 16, i sang Petra's songs and won a few talent contests. That was 34+ years ago

I interviewed him in the 6th grade, 1976-77, for the school newspaper, he was married to my brother's 2nd grade teacher.
You are a good man John Schlitt. I always loved Head East but couldn't be happier that you left that lifestyle behind.
The beyond belief era Petra needs to put out another album or at least a single with good old 80s synth and guitar solos.
Wow. i’m the 80s, Petra along with many other great Christian bands while deployed n the Navy. a lot of guys would come up jamming and ask who they we’re. “It’s Christian Rock”. they went blank. at least one guy headed to DL in California shortly later during a Christian jubilee to watch Petra after i turned him in their music.
God can work in any great way He wants. music is just one of them ways 😊

Great interview and it is awesome to see someone in the industry he is in and use it to Glorify Jesus. God has honored his talent to draw in others who do not know the love of Jesus.

One of the greatest Christian rock voices of all time. I remember Petra 30 years ago on the Beyond Belief Tour with Josh McDowell and he is still as good.

Volz was a lead singer of Petra but he left the group. John Schlitt was the lead from 1986 onward and my favorite.

All those years as a teenager with Petra influencing my life. I absolutely loved Greg. I went to Creation festival at Mount Union Pennsylvania in 1986.
I had no idea that Greg left. That's the only reason I agreed to go at my younger age at the time. Petra was going to be there!!!
Did I hear the great amazing vocals of Greg Volz? No, it was like when you shake someone's hand and it's limp.
Yes, I got to talk to all the guys backstage, but I did not care for the decision that was made. I guess they had no choice.

I just couldn't believe that somebody from the band Head East, would join the one and only Petra.
Little backstory. I didn't care for my time in history. I did not like the '80s or the '90s. I was more into 50s, '60s, '70s rock.
It was such a huge disappointment.
There was no Christian band like the original Petra ever. The real meaning of the Bible would lift right off the pages and into the music.
This stopped whenever John came into the band.
God had such a powerful band working for him and the devil came in and destroyed it.
It's so sad. Just a testament of what Jesus said. The seed is planted, then the devil comes to take it away. 😭😭😭

John Schlitt is the best male vocalist I have ever heard. I started listening to Head East at age 16 and ended up in the same church that John got saved at in Lincoln Illinois.

Oh this is Great! John Schmitt sounds Amazing Mike Huckabee said it right John is a Fantastic Singer! The Song he Performed on here Blew Me Away I am Amazed his voice at the age is Incredible and Absolutely if there was a Real True RRHOF not the Rolling Stone Magazine Award Hall which Baffles me that it’s not called out for being pred. Very Unfair Organization . In 1977 I had emergency surgery and was diagnosed with a Muscle Nerve Disease I had to withdraw from my 9th grade year and I had to spend most of that year recovering the very first thing I got to go out and do my oldest Brother took me to my first concert I spent a lot of my time listening to Music I had Really Liked the Head East Albums and had some Favorite Songs we went to see Head East had really Good seats and Wow John Schmitt just was So Good and seeing the Band live like that was Awesome I have since been to almost 700 concerts I am Very Happy for John and Glad He found Jesus and giving his Gift! Another Singer I had lost track of John Elefante who replaced Steve Walsh for a few years in The Band Kansas and is a Great Singer I got to see him with Kansas I found an interview and he was talking about his work with Petra and John Schmitt. I Wish The Best for both Vocalists! Thank You for posting this!

Ok, it has been a while since I've seen John, but there is NO mistaking that voice! It sounds just as pure as it did in 1986 on that first Petra album.

Head East was awesome, his work in Petra is amazing, but you have to listen to " Unfit for Swine " his solo album is unbelievable, he was doing stuff with the Jay Seducokul or something like that band too. I'm not sure what he is doing here but it is absolutely terrible 😢 Sorry John...
With his talking voice, you'd never think he could hit those high notes singing. Strange thing is, hitting those real high vocals while singing actually makes your voice lower tone in regular speech. I don't know the science behind it, but it even affects some females talking voice. John can hit those highs that's for sure. I like Petra band they have some good songs. Only one guy I know sounds similar to johns singing voice and that's Steve Perry from Journey.

I had a chance to meet John Schlitt and Petra back in the day, when he had just joined the band. They were recording their first album with John at Pakaderm studios in California at the same time I was there recording a demo of three songs for another record label. Very nice guys. Those were fun times. Got the chance to hear their new stuff before it was released.

I remember I met John Schlitt at a very tiny church, he put on a very small concert, maybe 80 people were present and I bought one of his cassette tapes and got his autograph on the Petraphonics cassette tape. He has a great voice!!

If I'm not mistaken that's Scott Bernard on guitar. Long ago he went to my church in Lafayette, La. and moved away went on to great things including playing in Kenny Loggins' band. I love to see people singing for the glory of Jesus
