For those who want to know, I excerpted this from a pdf file I have for a full scale version of one of these cabinets ...
"Eighty years ago, before built-in cabinets were common, every modern homemaker wanted a “Hoosier” cabinet in her kitchen. As a baking center, it was the last word in efficient design and convenience, packed with labor-and time-saving features. Millions of Hoosiers, almost all manufactured by companies in Indiana, were sold before styles changed and built-in kitchen cabinets became the rage in the 1940s."
    Have a better day!

Thanks Sean. When Ara started putting stuff in the cabinet I was confused thinking I have to Google Hoosier. When she said flour I was thinking why does a cabinet need a 'flower' bin! Thanks for the history.

This looks like fun as well. However I would have put some black streaking on the work surface for my own and a white or clear bowl under the flour bin funnel. The funny thing is I actually have a real in my home. lol Have a great day

,I have a friend who has a Hoosier complete with the original flour hopper and other accessories. Unfortunately, he painted it white with black trim. >_<
There is also a small country restaurant in a former 100+ year old store near me that has all 100% steel-topped tables. None match, of course, which adds to the charm. The original sales counter is utilized as a coffee bar with tall stools. They also have a Hoosier that they use every day for a pantry to store napkins, glasses, silverware, etc. Antiques add so much grace.

Not watched the whole video yet so. It sure if you paint it or not but the burnt edges from the laser printer already make it look so authentically old

This is so beautiful! It reminds me of the kitchen pantry in an old farmhouse owned by an elderly neighbor who I knew as a child. The Hoosier Cabinet was built-in with a matching counter, double cabinets on top, a large cabinet on the lower left, and a tip-out bin for potatoes. The lady of the house did most of her baking preparation in the pantry, with her spices, other baking ingredients, and canned goods (in both cans and Mason jars) on shelves behind her, within easy reach. The pantry was wide enough to easily turn around to reach everything in front and behind, with only a few steps to take at the most. The adjacent kitchen contained both an ice box and vintage cast-iron stove (that burned wood) and a modern stove and refrigerator (they used all of them). I actually grew up with this as the norm among our rural neighbors, so I feel like I grew up in a much earlier era, and I rather like that. Thank you for such a beautiful project that evokes happy memories for me.

My grandmother had a cabinet that she used for pastries. It did not have the top part. It has a bottom cabinet with a white porcelain counter top. It has a raised edge that was worn and has grey streaks and markings where the porcelain has been worn off. She cooked for 12 children and 3 farm hands, my grandfather and herself. She won several blue ribbons at the county fair for her cooking. The children got a whole fruit pie to take to school for lunch. The cabinet held 50 pound bags of flour and she used about 100 lbs of flour to make biscuits;, yeast rolls, bread, pies and cakes every week.
My Mom told me that grandma was baby sitting me one day while she was at work. On this day grandma was doing the wash in a ringer washing tub when it went berserk. It started shaking and moving around the kitchen floor and my grand mother grabbed me and ran into the other room and slammed the door. When my Mom arrived to the house she heard grand ma screaming and when mom entered the kitchen the washer was moving across the floor and then reached the end of the plug and stopped because it unplugged itself. The room was covered in soap suds and my mom called my Great Aunts to come over and help with the cleanup..

So many amazing memories here Richard! And thank you for sharing them with me! Someone else also mentioned the wash tub and I totally would have never thought about it being a kitchen item because modern houses have the laundry machines in other rooms. But now all I can think is that I want an entire home baked fruit pie for lunch! Yum!

My grandmother had a nice Hoosier cabinet. Recently my mother-in-law told me that she knew that type of cabinet as a “craft cabinet “.

  • @rainsongt189
    @rainsongt189 4 роки тому

Hoosier cabinets are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture one can own. Ours has served as a baking center, a breakfast bar and my husband's office.
I've never seen one with the round jab holder nor a rolling pin. Some had jars but they were on a wire rack either in the upper cabinet doors or on the back where you have the round rack. Don't worry about the roundness of the jars. Many Hoosier cabinet jars were square and had linear "ribs" from top to bottom. They weren't always clear glass either. Some were a creamy white while others were a kind of frosty mint green.
When we purchased our cabinet, a label on the back called it "Peal Oak." Yep, it was oak but with a white enamel paint on top that had yellowed with age and probably a coal furnace. My husband refinished it to the original oak except for the tambour (roll top) that covers the work surface. The tambour has disappeared in all our moves but that's okay.
Oh, the slide out work surface on mine is white enamel with red trim. I'm so glad you added the brackets on the side of the cabinet that hold the top and bottom together. They aren't the most attractive part of the piece, but they are necessary for stability.
What a wonderful project, Ara. Thanks for sharing your hard work.

Hi Ara, I'm a big fan from Malaysia so I had no idea what a Hoosier Cabinet was. Searched UA-cam for videos on it and wow! What an interesting history! It's amazing how pivotal the cabinet was to the evolution of the integrated kitchen system we all know and love worldwide today. Absolutely gorgeous and so many great ideas on making unusual items! LOVE the rolled paper idea for the sifter and the handle!!!! I confess that I have seen the glue sticks used as glasses and jars before and I think I recall that she held them over a candle so she could shape them. She was using the fatter glue sticks and it was for a 1:6 scale so there was a little more margin for error though, lol. BRILLIANT to use the holes from the jar holder as the lids! As much as I love the hall tree, the hoosier Cabinet will be my first kit buy...hurry up and let us know when they are in the shop! :-)

I am so glad things are going well with your channel. After the changes with YT right after you had decided to go full time. I know you and others were worried about how it would affect things. I am hoping that those things have settled down. Congratulation on 30K Subs. I love this cabinet I have seen ones like this in vintage stores. I am not sure if I have seen some in enamel white and black. I was thinking of one of the things in the older kitchen was crome and vinyl table and chair set. Some times the vinyl was red, yellow, and a combination of pink with gray triangles print of some type. Just a thought. I hope you are having a good weekend. God Bless.

Thankfully things seem to be ok for me on YT right now. It's not for everyone and one of my fav channels shut down and left. I am feeling very fortunate but still being cautious! Great suggestion for the table... I will have to look up some images and do some research! ;) Thank you Debbie!!

The details on this Hoosier cabinet are exquisite! My Mom had a Hoosier (purchased new by her Grandma) and I'm currently restoring a 1926 McDougall cabinet, so I greatly appreciate the beautiful detail you have given this piece, right down to the sliding "porcelain" top, the flour bin, the jar holder, and even the "brackets" since these cabinets come in a lower cabinet and a top cabinet. A lot of these cabinets had a stencil in the middle of the doors (usually floral or art deco style) and I've wondered if using decals you'd put on your nails would mimic these stencils. Just a thought! I just want to say how incredibly impressed I am with how true to life your Hoosier cabinet is. (P.S. I used to live in New Castle, Indiana, where the Hoosier cabinet was manufactured, so it holds a special place in my hear.

Hi Ara 😃. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been collecting pictures of kitchens circa 1910 - 1920 for over 2 years now but my "sticking" point in not even starting this project has always been, "How on earth do I make a Hoosier Cabinet, having never seen one before?". I live in Australia & we don't (or even did not, back in the day) have Hoosiers in our kitchens. So this project has been jostling round my brain for the past couple of years but now, no excuses, I can begin!😀😃😀. Just need to source a freestanding sink with the wrought iron legs! Thank you so much for sharing your perfect creations for this vintage kitchen!🤩😍🤗

I am so glad to hear that the project is so helpful for you!! I may have to look into some sort of sink for my next subscriber special! I think it would work well with the already finished pieces ;) I hope you will share your creations with me too!

@@BentleyHouseMinis ooohhh! Yes please, Ara, a sink would be great and, if I'm not be too presumptuous, even a table and chairs as all the kitchen pictures from that era had a kitchen table with chairs - it was back then, and sadly only in some cases today, the hub of the home😄! Thank you🤗

FYI: If anyone wants to a product that gives a true metallic finish. I saw something called Alclad (brand name) lacquer. I don't sell it, but another UA-camr crafter uses it on her projects to get a high shine for certain projects. However, I think you have to use it outside or with a breather mask.
