  • Join me and my son on our first Father Son Canoe trip on the Rabbit River in Nopiming Provincial Park!! I was first introduced to backcountry canoeing and camping on this river and have travelled it many times. Best fishing I have ever had was in May at Campsite 6 at the rapids next to camp.
If you are looking for a wilderness adventure, the Rabbit River to Cole Lake route is a great option. Although the Rabbit River is an easy route to navigate and relatively short, the winding river, shallow water, headwinds and beaver dams can really create some challenges. If you are heading towards Cole Lake in a tandem canoe with a lot of gear (ie. jugs of water, cooler, packs of beer, etc...) and/or a heavier plastic canoe there can be a lot of dragging and walking when water levels are low. I have done it with a lot of gear, just give yourself an early start to the day and make sure to stay hydrated and fueled up. You'll have your work cut out for you!!
If you are looking for deeper water, I would suggest the Seagrim Lake Chain Canoe Route or the Bird River canoe route launching at Tulabi Falls/Lake. Be sure to check out the video of my 4-Day father daughter canoe trip on the Seagrim Lake Chain.

I just got back from this trip. The walleye in the rapids by site 6 really do hit hard, and so do the perch one set of rapids up. Great route out to Cole lake.

That’s awesome! Good move on taking a dip, that’s one way to make a memory for the both of you lol I will definitely be taking the route again this year. Just a note, the route map on the MB website shows 5 portages and there were 6 on the way to campsite 7. When I did it in 2019 I remember 5 as per the map, I guess the low water this year created another portage. Thanks for watching, appreciate it!

Hats off to the Dads of the world who take time and patience showing their children the beautiful nature and experience of a canoe trip. I have a 10 yr old boy and he loves these trips and looks forward to them each yr. i only wish his paddle would touch the water more lol. For now i am glad to have the company and look forward to these trips together. Great trip, i really enjoyed watching it and think your son will be excited to go on another one. Just curious what time of yr you were there. The water level seemed low when i passed by in sept so i decided on seagrim instead.

My son is 10 as well! Yeah I think his paddle was out of the water pretending to be a motor boat most of the time lol We went on September 4th, anticipated it being low with the dry conditions. Thought about Seagrim, but took my daughter the year before and wanted to change it up. Thanks so much for taking time to watch, really appreciate it!

    Great video I enjoyed it.
Your son is well behaved and it seems like he loves the canoeing paddleing most of the way.
    Your a great role model.
If he learns how to use the GoPro and camera maybe he would make a few videos when he is older.
Another adventurer like Jim Baird or John from lost lakes.🚣🤑
