This is actually one of the better mcu origin stories and one of the main reasons is because it doesn't seem like a typical marvel film which is refreshing. Also I fucking love Morris he is the best.
I see that a lot. "It doesnt seem like a typical Marvel film." What do you mean by that? (Honest question, because while I think I know what youre talking about--- it's still a good discussion)
@@hkr0065 The setting is just very different. A whole corner of the world we haven't seen. It was like watching Black Panther for the first time, but also this is relatively technology free so most of what you see is martial arts and mystical things. We've seen mystical with Dr Strange but this is a different flavor. There are some cameos but if you didn't have them and you didn't know this was Marvel, I think you wouldn't connect the dots (other than the film structure is fairly familiar). Oh and I think having all those creatures also helped it differentiate it from the other movies. The big final battle made me feel like I was watching Mulan, Raya and somehow Monster Hunter at the same time. It was fun imo
The stunts in this movie definitely taking notes from Jackie's stunt playbook, mad respect to Brad Allan, and also Andy Cheng who is helping him on coordinating the stunt works
Fun fact: all those creatures were based on actual Chinese mythology and legend. Morris, which is the one you guys had an issue with, is actually called a Hundun.
Thank you for the Reference. Now that makes them look even more ignorant. Because they frame it as if the creature is some furby that Disney invented out of their asses for merchandising.
@@rifyrafi oop that’s right I totally forgot that only one “certain” group of people are only allowed to have ignorant moments. anyone with an ethic look and darker skin must be all knowing 🙄

You guys obviously weren't paying attention in the second half because your complaint about how the villians arrived to the heroes location at the end was explained. It was difficult for the heroes to get there because they took a route that could get them there early but was very dangerous. They also had a guide from a native inhabitant with them. 🤷🏿♂️
Yuppp... and the significance of getting there early was because the villain had just gained the location too, and now also knew when it could be accessed without said native inhabitant.
Exactly. It was all explained but they weren’t paying attention . My guess is they got popcorn or went to restroom at that part. I refuse to believe they’re that dumb.

It's always been a theme in his movies, right? He is a defensive fighter, never wants to start any trouble but always has to beat people up to protect himself XD
Usually movies hardly make platonic relationships between characters. It starts out that way but then they fall in love. Glad that they are just good friends because you don't see that often especially in high budget stuff like this.
@@ghost245353 He did fight the dragon first. But he wouldn't have been able to defeat it because Wenwu couldn't unlock the true power of the Ten Rings despite having them for a thousand years. These are the people who got Christian Bale mr “I’ll put on dangerous amounts of weight for one role then become rail thin and starve myself for another” to play a Voldemort looking alien in a goofy Taika Waititi movie, Marvel can get anybody they want at this point
I’ll be honest the second half had emotional weight due to the dynamic between Shang-Chi and The Mandarin. The fight scenes did feel like you saw them grow as characters.
I was on the complete opposite side of their opinion on the last half of the movie. Wow. “What a climax” is what I thought. I genuinely didn’t expect the last half of the film to turn out how it did. One of the best Marvel movies I’ve seen that wasn’t a culmination of characters like Avengers SINCE Black Panther. I actually really hope this movie gets the respect it deserves. And the Jackie Chan feel was actually because HIS actual fight choreographer was involved with the movie and passed away after production. You’ll notice his name in the credits before the last credit scene! RIP Brad Allan❤️
that ending was epic. I didn't expect it, but it was spectacular and necessary to put Shang-chi on the level of other issues in the MCU. Without it, he's a small-time character of no consequence. Black Widow failed for me because it felt so small. To the point in the video though, if I recall correctly, the big FX parts are already handled by a department in marvel/Disney that is separate from the director and their initial vision. Regardless, this was a 10 for me.
@@JumpPanda I think a lot of people forget that these are shared continuity and those third acts need to define the hero and the struggles. That ending ten years ago would have seemed over the top, but in a post thanos, post-blip world, I find it totally believable that these characters would get dragged into something so extreme, and choose to charge into battle. By doing Shang chi is no own the contextual power level of the top tier heroes. Without that end sequence he would have been down there with ant-man, widow and hawkeye. It was a breathe-taking sequence that absolutely had purpose for the character and the stories moving forward.
@@rui5421 Tbf, you don't need to go big with something like Shang chi. When the core story of the movie is about family, it should of stick to it. The ending shouldn't be this thing that the main character isn't in conflict with, the ending should of kept the conflict with his father as he was the villain of the movie. We can have sequels that amplifies Shang chi to be a more powerful character, but a first movie like this isn't what Shang chi needed. Imo, Shang chi needed a much better written origin story about being good when the temptation of being what his father made him to be is always around the corner

what's been one of my gripes about MCU is the LACK OF big giant monsters..and the heroes fighting them. Thor and GOTG had done it..but, i expected more from them. Doctor Strange's also the one character that should be a normal setting for this. Shang-Chi...well, if it's mystical and not just kung fu, then it should be appropriate for those monsters, no?
The bus scene was one of several scenes that I wish I had a pause and rewind button to re-watch all the amazing stunts and effects work. It was truly incredible. So many scenes were straight up Jacki Chan inspired. From the trailer I was really doubtful that the main character had enough charisma to carry the movie, but he did a pretty good job and pairing him with Awkwafina was brilliant. Also the fact that he could actually do martial arts made up for the crapfest that was Iron Fist 😒

Gonna have to disagree with Korey. This is a top-tier MCU movie. Hell, even the end CGI was not as cringe as some of the other MCU films. The second half wasn't so much a villain as just a bad celestial force.
I'm in between tbh. I give this at least a high matinee, but its pretty mid tier to me. This is why I like Marvel. If a movie is ma'ine and or low full price. They'll learn what went wrong and what work. Shang Chi is doing the same thing the first film Avengers, Black Panther, and Capt Marvel just name a few. A lot of world building before they make a deeper story. Example, the first Captain America movie was very campy, but Winter Solider and Civil War expanded storytelling. Also, it comes down to who's directing/writing it.
32:30 "We just need a big monster battle, theres no reason, they just rise up for no reason" Literally the movie has explained through character interactions and minor expositions...the two monsters theyre talking about...the other soul sucking monster are the monster dragons they've fought in the past and has kept imprisoned for 1000s of years and tries to manipulate people like Wenwu into freeing the dragon by using his dead wife as a trick. And the other monster/dragon, its been explained through a scene where the dragon helped fought their ancestors win a war of soul sucking dragons.... I just feel like some of the criticism of Korey and martin is kinda just base on not paying enough attention. And really saying Black Panther did stuff better is just unfair. If anything Black panther is on the same level as Shang chi here. To imply that at the battle at the end of the movie is just people fighting feels pointless, same goes for Black Panther... at the last battle of the movie, its just people fighting. Korey and Martin can have their own opinions, thats fine. Great video but a lot of your complaints about the second half are explained and set up in the first half... -The Dragons was mentioned by Shang Chi's mother as she was making the paper Dragon. Where she explained that was the source of her and her peoples powers. -The maze had a path that was obtained by the map made of water that the Dragon statue made so the villains used that one. -The Dragon appeared because Shang Chi has the heart of the dragon as thats where his mothers people got their powers. The Dragon was a guardian in that realm and the reappearance of the dark one summoned the Dragon. I really like the motivation of the Villain he just wanted his wife back..
i loved this movie and i think you didn’t listen to the narrative of the mother enough to realize she gave them info about her land and family history that came to a colorful fruition at the end.
Yeah she had been teaching Shang how to air bend the rings even as a little kid... Shang and xialing were riding the dragon and the eyes lit up just like it did when the dad took the 2 gem necklaces and put it in the dragon statue then the water map appeared. The mom set all this in motion back when they were kids.
The creature was what helped Shang chi figure out how to get to the village before his dad. His dad already knew because the pendants the mother gave him showed him the opening and a map to get in. Lol we’re y’all not paying attention?
Does Korey actually think that accent is exclusively for Black people? I know Asian, Latino, and White people who speak like that and Black people who do not.
Korey even mocked with an asian accent in the since deleted video of Shang-Chi prediction video. Double Toasted = double standard. If Robert Downey Jr. can act as a black-face character in Tropic Thunder but not have his MCU movies protested, yet Asian actors seeking main roles representing the world's most populated race can't have genuine representation beyond Hollywood tropes?

Judging by the comments, this is probably one of the reviews most disagreed with by Double Toasted fans. And I don't blame them. When Korey and Martin say "things just happen at the end", they make it seem like Rise of Skywalker lmao. The end battle has more weight and emotional stakes than a lot of MCU films. It's essentially a son pleading with his father and realizing he's gone mad. While the 2nd half is disney formulaic, I NEVER thought I'd see a younger MCU hero actually say the lines, "I'm going to have to kill my father." Simu delivered that line perfectly and it's ballsy for a Marvel and Disney film to have that. Can we also recognize Marvel allowed their main hero to be a murderer at 14?! Lmao. I also think Korey was heavily exaggerating or just saw a different film when the fight scenes came on. Simu's fighting style was nothing like Jackie Chan's. Simu never apologized or was whimsical when kicking ass like Jackie. He straight up murked folks. Lastly, give credit to this film for taking the chance and have 50% of this movie in Mandarin Chinese. A lot of Hollywood films won't take this risk since a lot of audiences are lazy with reading.

Dear Korey and Martin. From Shang-Chi’s Aunt Nan while explaining at the wooden tapestry:..... “Our people lived in peace and prosperity until the attack of “The Dweller in Darkness”. He came with his army devouring every soul in its path and with each kill grew stronger decimating our largest cities. They were headed to your universe. The leaders of Ta-Los sent their strongest warriors from reaching the portal to your world. Our ancestors were no match for them until “THE GREAT PROTECTOR” joined their fight and turned the tide together and pushed the “Dweller in Darkness” into the dark gate. Locked him behind that gate ever since. Empowered by the power of “THE GREAT PROTECTOR” and the gift she gave us”.........The Mandarin broke the dark gate and let the Dweller in Darkness out. SO THINGS WERENT JUST HAPPENING.
i just thought it was weird at the end that awkwafina came with through the portal when she doesn't have superpowers.... i guess she is his sidekick tho... but technically she could go back to a normal life
Why say it's diverse? The two founders are black. Being from a different country I can get how that may come across as a compliment. But it's one of those things that doesn't need to be mentioned, please understand I'm not attacking you. Mentioning that's it's diverse, when founded by two black men, could come across as a "well good for you boys." Sort of thing. Difference in cultures plays a part, just thought I'd mention it and I hope I explained it well enough
There's also been a lot of discussions not only in the US or China. Lots of Asian-Americans, Asian-Canadians etc. like me like that the film touches on humanizing us and challenges the idea we are these 'exotic' beings meant to be conquered instead of understood (Anna May Wong being typecast constantly as the Dragon Lady is one example). I do wish the film could have touched on that later point more, in light of all that's happened lately, but it's helped promulgate our community in a much more positive direction that's worth appreciating.
The most unrealistic thing in the movie. I’d sooner believe there’s dragons in this universe before I believe parking lot attendants are able to afford to live in San Francisco. 🤣

Again korey you seriously need to go watch it again, same with Martin
Loved this movie. I could have done without the whole CGI fest in the last act, but i gotta say, as far as corporate intrusion goes, they combined it well with the family drama. Wasn't as strong as the first half but i thought the fight scenes between Shang and his dad kept me engaged
Back when Spider-Man and Blade II were being prepped for released, it was announced that Shang-Chi was in development. 20 years for this character to hit the screen. It was worth the wait. I enjoyed every minute of it. The plot holes and unanswered moments were just what nobody paid attention to and assumed made no sense. I was paying attention to everything. This was a decent introduction for a new character and i can't wait for more.

One of the best Marvel movies I’ve seen that wasn’t a culmination of characters like Avengers SINCE Black Panther. I actually really hope this movie gets the respect it deserves. that ending was epic.

Even I was able to I follow that. They're trying to sound so critical they're coming off as little pretentious
Korey talking about getting “real jobs” when he makes his living off doing podcasts/UA-cam is definitely a choice.
Movie critic has been a real job a damn long time, I think at least half the cinema going audience relies on them for a heads up about what's worth avoiding
@@etherspin Being a You Tuber/podcast movie critic is a “real job”? Give me a break. Double Toasted isn’t even a mainstream channel. And hardly anyone uses critics to determine what movie they see nowadays. Very few of the people who will even bother to see Shang-Chi will even watch this review. We represent a small sample size of the audience. Anyone can become a movie critic. You have obscure nerd bloggers online who will never even come close to the notoriety of a Roger Ebert or a Gene Sieskel that are RT approved critics. Double Toasted is great and has many fans but many those fans still make up a small fraction of the people who will even bother to see this movie. This isn’t a “real job.”

Why do people assume that akwafina doesn’t talk like that. My family is from queens most of the Asian people I know talk like her.
Thank you!! Pretty offensive to say she can't sound urban just because she's Asian.
People tend to forget the whole blaccent controversial w awkwafina is one she's from queens NY and two she's also an actress. Awkwafina is born in queens and been into black and underground rap culture since she was 13. She is pro black and LGBTQ before it was popular. And the whole ocean 8 and crazy rich Asians situation was that the directors wanted her especially for that role. Even ocean 8 director said they wanted her to "play an urban queen girl" which awkwafina obliged. So people and at her makes sense but it's not entirely her fault. Also, she's done stereotypical and racial depictions of Asians too look up green tea with her and Margaret cho.
It's the fact that they are hiring her as a copy but ignoring the authentic culture. If will Smith made a movie with a young black girl doing a Asian imitation would be laughed out of theaters. Just because you can do something does not mean it is acceptable. Look back at black face actors. Same dichotomy different era.
@@poncho520nyc9 The world doesn’t work like that. If you’re an Asian and you were born and raised anywhere else, you’re supposed be be expected to speak in a tounge or accent you have no personal affiliation with? what just because people are supposed to have a different mentality nowadays?

I love the climax with a Dragon and everything is not just a martial arts movie is also a fantasy movie and it makes sense because Dragons are a huge part of Chinese culture and spiritual beliefs this is a super hero + martial arts + fantasy movie so that big climax make perfect sense to me
The mid-credits sequence is always better than the post-credits sequence. They even poked fun at that in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
That's true for the most part and I don't really get that. Shouldn't the cool one be the one you have to wait for?
@@rockytopbritt I think it makes sense. The cool one tends to be viewed more often so, if they're going to show a set up for the next movie, it has to be there. The second one could be reserved for the ones that aren't immediately important to the MCU.
@@irvenman I guess that makes sense from a business perspective. I just remember how cool it was waiting for something like the Thor end credits scene and wondering why I wasted my time with the Homecoming end-credit scene.
The end of the movie was perfectly explained if you pay attention to the entire movie. this was a great movie
I enjoyed it more because that third act didn't bother me. I was down with it going full blown fantasy. The kaiju dragon battle could have been trimmed a bit but that's about it. And the rings are awesome, I can't wait to see Shang-Chi using them for team-up moves in a future Avengers movie. Honestly one of the best origin stories in the MCU.
Totally feel the same way. They're just ranting. With the whole battle, it shows how strong he is now and isn't just a kung-fu master in the mcu aka be useless in a fight like hawkeye/black widow.
@@NestyAngel Exactly. This shit got mythological as FUCK at the end. And I like how everyone had to come together.
@Videogamestashbox.com they explained the dragon as the big protecter it was in the scene were they explained what was going on behind the wall. One of the themes of the film is he is taking parts of both his parents. So his father is giving him the rings as he is dies. He also is more powerful than his father who only had his human power were shang chi could tap into both his father rings and martial arts and his mother ability. That was the whole point of the fight with the aunt.
To be Jackie Chan, you need some broken bones after the scenes.
Yeah comparing this is insulting. Chan didn’t use a green screen or stunt double. It’s in a league of its own.

I think Korey stopped paying attention, because he's saying that he got lost. I can easily explain all that stuff, because it was purely explained. ESPECIALLY the creatures at the end. That was explained at the beginning, the middle, and the ending. I don't know how you missed that, but it was explained multiple times. And not only that, it was ALSO explained how Shang-Chi got to Ta Lao, and how his father got there. It was explained. I'm confused how you missed it. But I agreed with everything you said up until you decided to say it had no explanation.
Korey tries to hard sometimes
mov yeah, I'm not trying to talk trash. Korey is hilarious. But I'm not about to sit here and let him miss key points in his review and then act like they don't exist though. I think he does that because he knows he has marvel haters and marvel lovers as fans so he's trying to be fair.
@@CHARLESXTDOOLEY I think the problem overall with the movie is that it does too much telling and not enough showing. I am so excited to see Simu Liu in this. I loved him in Kim's Convenience!
@AM3OBA 😂😂😂
@Fawkes Fox I mean in a way he's more Canadian then Chinese. Yes, he was born in China and that's his heritage and a part of his identity. But I think being an Asian-Canadian who immigrated as a child and got all his formative schooling as a Canadian, I tend to think of him as a Canadian Actor of Chinese decent tbh.
And the Kim's TV show was mostly about that first generation/second generation disconnect of being a "hyphen" Canadian immigrant.
that show is the best, but my man struggles with his Father/Son relations lol
Martin talking to the Mandarin “well I dunno maybe, world domination that could be kinda cool…” 😂😂😂
You just sold me on the character!
The movie was awesome.

Yep
@Nooneinparticular987 the MCU super fans are like this
@Chuck Raylor but what they said about the second half sounds just dumb
It’s clear they didn’t understand the water map scene explaining how to get to Ta-lo or the wooden tapestry explaining the creatures.

A lot of Hollywood films won't take this risk since a lot of audiences are lazy with reading.
the bad guys got there easy because the dad knew the path would open and not have a problem bc it opens once a year. i guess if you aren’t paying attention you’ll miss it
I mean the whole scene of the jade eyes and water map is so blatantly clear. If anyone forgot about it while watching, then you got the memory attention of a gnat haha

Michelle Yeohs breakdown was awesome. It’s complex thinking for Korey, so he tuned out, Then complains later it didn’t make sense. That’s Special Ed student material right there.
