- Craig travels to Wollongong in NSW to meet the Australian car audio SPL champion, who's 1979 Volvo wagon creates a whopping 177.2 dB of sound pressure! This car has to be seen to be believed.
Want more? Check out this interview with Damian Tennent, a car audio enthusiast who happens to have a significant hearing loss.

The guy who built this. So awesome to see how passionate he is in card audio. The second he started talking about his car his smile nvr left. We need more passionate ppl like this dude. Awesome build as well.
13:08 is when he listens to it.
Richard Whitaker hero
Cheers Richard Whitaker
And that was the opened door side
Imagine the sealed side...
OneOfKind Leo that is why they have different classes
Scarface- "who put shit together..me that's who!!
No steering wheel? That's no car, that's a sub box on wheels!
Ikr!?!...and it says on the car door "driver: name" !?!?!lol
It's literally the interior of a huge built box , that you can't even listen to .....
It is called an extreme/ultimate vehicle
these guys are freaking awsome!! professional interview, sharing for the love of the sport...so much respect.. for a few years there in the mid 2000, here in the states I thought the industry(sport) was dying off slowly ..truly hurt my soul..now to see car audio enthusiasts like this all over the world blows my mind!!! PS ,those amp and subs look like beasts..wow!! AWSOME BUILD!!!!!
Billy Arnold. Lot of respect for this man, so much knowledge to share and a willingness to help others.
This is a great interview. He said it best. "Be humble". So many people in the industry act like they built it all on their own. Salute
This guy made a Volvo more durable what a mad lad
He tempered Myolnir
That bass hit so hard it changed the interviewer 's accent for just a bit lol. Stupendous video!! Great job guys!!
That is one awesome build. And shows you dont need 10 18" subs to have a serious sound system. The owner seems like a stand up guy!
Thanks for your comment! Extreme spl category is like building a drag car for an audio system. Huge amounts of effort.
The less drivers, the more phase alignment, which is crucial for spl.
@@CsykKritI didnt know that. Interesting. Thanks for the enlightenment!
Bass culture transcends ethnicity, gender, age and backround. It brings together a whole conglomerate of like minded people to enjoy and appreciate the hard work of fellow bassheads. Bass for life. 🔊🔊🎶
I legit thought you were referring to the exhaust when you said in the title Australia's loudest car lmao
Another fantastic video!
Thanks mate. Hurry up and make a video with me soon!! I need to pick your brain
Old School Car Audio let’s plan 🤙
Its very cool! I'm not sure that I would ever go to the extent that he has but I can respect what he has accomplished.
Correct. It's not for everyone but acknowledge the effort.
If you are truely passionate, the struggling, or path to the goal is part of the reward weather you meet the goal or not, the journey can be the fun part!
True, the losses in between are worth the end result
We are in 180's over here in the states. Awesome to see Australia enjoys spl as well.
I love how it has the "driver's" name on the side.
the whole truth .. do not care about forums and people who think they know better, everyone has ears and builds the best system for themselves
Keep telling your self that you have never seen or built a Spl sounds system the tools it takes you would go broke lmao mr dyi
I am glad it is he and not me! Congratulations to him and I admire him for suffering so much for his art. I can attest to the fact that when you dedicate yourself into your art, you have to accept the losses that come and they will come and they will hurt, some more than others. Too loud for me! I want clean and clear from the bottom to the top. No deaf causing volumes for me, only clean beautiful sound reproduction please! Thank you Craig! Frank is awesome guy!
Australia's loudest OMG i just happened to come across this video and i can easily say I'm hooked this video was so cool and a learning experience at the same time and just all around amazing i love this car u are a BEAST 💪🏼 sorry if i talk weird im from PITTSBURGH PA IN THE US but i can't believe how u took a 400$ car and look at what u did with it it's so awesome to see someone take a car like that and put all of that time and effort into it oh just wanted to say sorry about u loosing a lot of friends on ur journey in my heart i feel if they would have stuck it out with u it would have made it that much more worth it ok enough of that life goes on and it looks like it's been doing great for u i only watched ur video maybe 3mins ago and im definitely a fan i definitely subscribed and i hope to see many more of ur videos in the near future. O AND 1 more thing before i stop rambling on the car that pulled in to the garage in the beginning of the video OMG that car is so immaculate if u have a little time and u don't mind would it be possible to give me a little information about that car i kno ur a very busy man so if u can't get back to me not a problem i truly understand (✌🏼💪🏼🔈💪🏼🔉💪🏼🔊)
Death by bass... sounds like a way to get away with murder.. “hop in mate ill be just a sec i gotta check my exhaust”. Bring em to hospital “he grabbed at his chest and stopped breathing”. 2019 serial killer...
How they gona take them the hospital, its got no steering wheel, its not a car, it cannot be driven.
@@VengeanceCore So it's a vegetable?
Great video and its nice to see a sealed enclosure build again
My family is from Australia. They are such a pleasant ppl. They'd take the shirts off their backs for strangers much like us Canadians. Respect.
This is like seeing a drag car in audio scene...badass!
That's exactly right Adam... it's the extreme spl class... lasts less that a few seconds, just like a top fueler.
Going by how much old frankies head is shacking, you can tell he has spent way to much time in that car. Awesome stuff
CB CHASSISWORKS I was born with the tremor. has been this was since I was a child.
memory and cognitive abilities are to high for it to be parkinsons.
been tested for numerous things in my life. my body over produces and constantly releases adrenalin. hense the tremor
VOLVO WAGON yay!! New here Mate. Glad I found ya!! 😻🌐🔊🐈⬛🔊👑🐈😻
out of all the cars thay could chose they chose a volvo 245, i fucking love it
That's truly a sick system brother 👊
I thought it was the car with the loudest exhaust😂😅
Same here, this was lame.,,..
@@_Everyone__ Clicks on a video posted by a channel called "Old School Car Audio" and expects to see a video about a modified exhaust lmao...
I think that title goes to an American procharged Hemi street car named Megaladon. I watched him at a no-prep race in Houston Texas. I was standing real close to the starting line. I couldn't hear for about 2 minutes after he left the line. I know top fuel dragster's are the loudest drag car's. But the loudest street car definitely goes to megaladon. 👂💥💪
Was hoping for like an actual demo, little disappointed
You know it could possibly make his lungs explode but whatever it’s not that big of a deal I guess
My Australian brother, what a build!!!!!!!
177.2 DB how many Frequency ?
60 HZ or 70 HZ ?
Whats the Amplifires?
I don’t know about death but have sat in 173 dB vehicle, with ear protection and it hurts but doesn’t kill you , did this back in year 2000 , very hard to breathe , and only for a 3 second burp , but a normal healthy man should survive, without any lasting effects, still 178 is definitely a lot louder, I wouldn’t try it now that I am 43 , awesome video 👍🏻
They used another meter back in 2000, you can't compare scores on the old vs the new meter. This car is by far a lot louder.
@@extrakimF not completely true, the difference between the old and new meters are only about 3db
You are wrong. It depends on several different things. The louder you got, the more off the mics where. The freq you used played a big factor too, some freq where more off then other.
If you did your run after a loud car, your score normaly got higher etc..
That sounded like it hurt. My god
its crazy when you think about it. how much pressure you can get on top of what the subs would do in a normal box.
Hey Craig, nice interview, what frequency is that peaking at?
70Hz
New sub but amazing watching this. Live in America and know the subfari build. The time these vehicles take is amazing. Will be watching more
Now that's what I'm talking about
I’m trying to drive to work bumping that loud lol
that is insane
It's a tad mental....
There will be always someone better than you, but there will be always someone worse than you.
Soy aficionado bass audio me corre por la sangre 🩸 my respeto ✊ con este maestro 👨🏫 logró lo que muchos buscan ser el mejor
That's the equivalent to a top fuel funny car in racing terms....
174.3 db Mercedes Benz
ua-cam.com/video/jzM8R5hto4Y/v-deo.html
Very cool build!
That's not a car. That's a enclosure built in the shape of a car. Lol
Should have tested with the door closed (not at full volume). Though his body taking up space in the car may have increased the resonant frequency.
He said it can give you a heart attack!!! ❤️🙏🏽🤗
imagine getting 10 of those bad boys in the same place
Now this is a car
This is why I never party with an Aussie. You think your hard core then next thing you know it's Monday and your late for work. No people on earth are more balls to the wall.
That center council top needs to be wider! Notch up the roof on the pass side, so you can raise the floor on the pass side, if you havent done that yet. Try playing with temperature to adjust the cabs frequency.
You and your brother need to get a Isuzu and get back in the lanes 😉
@@ExtraKimB
Whoa!!! Long time man. It's been a while for us for sure. Too much money these days. I'll follow you Kim!
It have been a long time since the dB Dragracing forum :-o
I still have a "extreme" car, but not a true Extreme car. Not sure if it ever gets done, family and travels take up too much time to be able to build on the car.
Some loud midbass!
Sound dampening is a huge factor from what i see, i wanna go to an actual car audio show too bad this epidemic fucked things up.
Sorry my man but that stereo isn't the loudest. You have not yet heard my gal when I tell her I'm heading to the RC off-road track with my nitro 1/8th scale buggy.
Is there other vids of this car on youtube. Link ?
Not that I know...a few on some Facebook pages
Was hoping to hear music . Pretty cool though
Once you get circa 120db, it's instant and permanent deafness.
wrong most systems play around 20-40hz to low to do much damage to hearing. go watch exos video on it
The consequences of low frequency SPL & vibration on the human body has been well documented over the last 4 to 5 decades. It is absolutely irresponsible to claim that low frequency vibrations do not impact the human body. See our blog on this here: oldschoolcaraudio.com.au/pump-up-the-bass/
Its different for sure. Its just not my thing. I'm a music lover. I'll never set any records and,I'm fine with that. Just doing burps....are just burps. I've built more car audio systems than I can count. They were all daily drivers with a full front stage.
Agreed, I just don't get it. Just macho cock-waving really...
Im just here to watch the salvage cars get loaded up in the background
13:08 this is same sound that wake me up at 3 am
Weird how I saw the IASCA IDBL world record holding Phoenix Gold Honda CRX in my home town in Canada like 16 years ago and it was hitting 173 DB and now the record is only 180, I guess thats just the max you can do? It's like a speed record, every DB requires 5000 more watts worth of subs or something?
Years ago the microphones were not the transducer type so a lot of the readings were higher and perhaps considered "less accurate". But you are right, it's an exponential relationship... at some point the effort to increase by several dB requires double the power. Like building a drag car for a 6 sec quarter mile..compared to a 9 sec quarter mile.
Did not think you would be interested in Car Audio :)
Yeah a something like that, the record is around 183db, to go higher is extremely difficult.
If the car isn’t road worthy then it doesn’t count 👍🏼
Es increíble todo lo que se hace por la pasión del loud👍👏
That's almost like a volcano eruption. I think?
Tennessee Siren Productions volvocano
@@jonasheijke2903 😂😄
No...Krakatoa was much louder....
Seeing things first hand you get a perspective that no one can teach you'll get that lightbulb moment and see what you were looking for and not searching for it . It's the only way to get that part of you That separates you from the pack. Words of wisdom brother you speak the truth 👊
You would think a Tesla or Leaf would be the show cars used. Electric cars already have the wiring for more wiring and amps- right?
The amount of cable that is in an average spl show car would be around 300 feet of 1 gauge cable. From hood to amps alone in a running car would be like 200 feet.. the sealed cars built for burps usually only have rear mounted power houses so would be less footage but they use 0 or 00 gauge.. battery wise if you unhooked the motors and gutted an electric car you would definately have those batteries built in but they all rely on brake charging so would be a feat to keep those batteries protected and change charging systems as they are usually sealed and all the safety gizmos are up inside and if youve ever taken apart a small lithium battery than imagine one oops of a split second short will set off a self destruct sequence.. with 25k$ invested in an audio system its not the best of insurance to build it based off of engineered explosive batteries designed for a different application that consumes faaaar less amp draw per second than an amp pushing 19,000 watts to make a speaker burp 177 fuggn db’s... :)
It doesn’t play music tho, it’s literally just subs
179.9 now well done billy i want to know how many axis 12s it takes to be extreme spl car
The more structurally enhance the vehicle is the harder that system will hit. Your car flexing takes away some of the intensity.
We got guys out here running 24 15's only hitting 151 dbs. This thing has 4 15's wtf.
Nice!
A g d legend.
i got a dual 18 inch pa subwoofer tbh and it's goes up to 138db no cap
Inspiration to all very nice!!
Try a 1khz ref test tone maximum dB full scale, assuming there's no built in limiter,it wouldn't work after that
Insanity might be... spending enough money on a car audio system that it can kill you.
yeh baby vibe black death subs some UK brand and vibe is about the only decent thing to come out of the uk cuz everything else pretty much sucks well apart from teabags and the SAS and the SDC but yeh buzzing to see this build again and yep the Audries are a passionate bunch just like us Britain and one behind the mighty USA. great bloke great build and my favorite of all spl build videos. ah time for a bit of Sunday morning window shaking and a nice cup a tea.... "bastard bass spilt me tea" ; l
Does it play any music tho?
I think it's just for competing so technically there's no need for any type of mids highs tweeters because the car is so loud when there at the competitions there's no one in the car like the man said it would literally kill u to be in that car at💯 PERCENT FULL TILT (✌🏼💪🏼🔈💪🏼🔉💪🏼🔊)
there a upgrade?
ive seen this car in person in the sound off they held a while ago, never thought a volvo could rattle so much
Fire on wheels
I wonder what he does dB wise on music for a 1 minute run
Well.... this is the "extreme spl" category so it's not built for music. That's not the purpose of the car.
the show starts at 12:33
I want the full monty
Hello from USA Pennsylvania could you use lite weight concrete put perlite or peat moss in the mix ?. :-) :-)
Dave! Welcome mate. Hope you enjoy the channel.
This is the best in Australia!??!?!? Apparently America's bass heads have extreme standards lmfao.
I don't understand the point of building something like that where you would actually die if you were inside and the doors were shut.
Bragging rights
i suspect this amount of power causes traumatic brain injury ...
this guy may be exhibiting symptoms ....
that may be top over there but over here in the us were past 180 db
I wonder at what Hz. It sounded pretty high.. if so that would hurt so bad. Lol
70Hz
Volvo 275???? Its a Volvo 265?!?!
It's ashame u can't drive it though because that would be awesome
Not a car a giant boombox on wheels
Dude has more shakes than Michael J Fox.
Kurtis W I was actually born this way, is simply an essential tremor, doesn't get worse or better with age.
my body over produces and releases adrenalin 24/7. has its advantages and disadvantages.
Sounded like a fart box. Spl versus something to listen to might as well just bang two pots together
1 cube sounds real small for 30 hz range
hes playing 70hz
70 g's just to get somebody deaf. Props.
It's actually a sport now and if u do a little research u will find that it is not BASS that can cause hearing loss but it's the tweeters the hot pitch from the tweeters in the mid-range are the ones that can cause damage to your ears see ya learn something new everyday(✌🏼💪🏼🔈💪🏼🔉💪🏼🔊)
what is the sub?
They are vibe subs, run at 70Hz from memory.
Death by stereo
LOL 666 likes 🤔😯😈👹😱🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yo
Shouldn't a requirement to be a loud car be that it is actually a car that can drive? There isn't even a steering wheel. This is just a rolling sound chamber. Plus I don't think I will ever understand why people will dedicate so much time, energy, effort and money to build something with no musicality. Doesn't even have mids and hi's. All this effort to let out an 8 second burp of noise. I may be a hater but I just don't get it.
this "car" is built for extreme spl comps, meaning that the car doesnt have to drive. most shows are standard spl shows where the car has to run and drive to even compete
Why does people build top fuel dragsters? They are almost useless as a car.. They do this to push the limits and to set records, not to have a car to drive around on the streets
In dB Dragracing the car need to be able to drive into the competing lanes. He have the ability to drive this, sure only slow and with no comfort at all, but still it drives.
@@ExtraKimB great analogy
