- I didn't see much out there on UA-cam right now (August 2020) for Club Car driven clutches, so this is just some miscellaneous information about them. These are the driven clutches used on the vast majority of standard-duty Club Car DS golf carts that you would find on a golf course. This information is just my own knowledge, acquired as a hobbyist for the past 7 or 8 years.
Changed my 84+ driven clutch for an 88+ model and wow what a difference. The huge rattle and vibration is gone. Going to replace the drive clutch too. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video, don't know much about my 96 CC but this should help. If mine doesn't have the green spring would it work if i installed one? What is the benefit of the stiffer spring?
So I’m having some major issues with my cart. It’s a 2014 club car turf 1 with the 350 in it. I’ve been having high rpm’s and just started figuring out that someone changed the motor possibly on this. My motor is spinning counter clockwise when it should be clockwise. I have the new style clutch wheel on here and looks to be a blue spring I think and possibly the new style rear end because my shifting knob is reversed

Will the later model driven clutch work for my 93 DS? I’m soon installing the later primary clutch, repositioning the clips as you have shown in your video.
The springs inside the driven clutches are directional. If you use a 1997-up driven clutch (for clockwise motors) on your '93, you will need to replace the spring in it with a counter-clockwise-oriented spring; or else upgrade to the torque spring, which is non-directional.

Now my question: I sent away for a driven clutch for a 1994 club car DS gas and the part I got was obviously for an older model. It looks just like the one you have in the background on this video. Is there any downside to using this clutch? The reason I ask is that after ordering the driven clutch we returned to MI for the summer. When I got back to FL and realized I probably had the wrong clutch (even though the packing slip says "Driven clutch Club Car DS 88-96" from Golf Cart Garage) I called them and tried to return it but they said it had been too long since the order was placed.
So, what is the downside to using this clutch in my 94 CC gasser??
You can use that driven clutch if you already have it and can’t return it. It may be ok for you. I’m just not a fan of the design as it’s prone to warping and I would always try to buy the finned design personally.
So if adding a 3 inch lift and rear seat to a 1999 club car ds would this spring be a good upgrade? I'm worried that my club car won't have the power needed after adding the rear seat with a load on them
I would add the lift, tires, and rear seat; drive it; and then decide if you want to do the power spring.
I have two gas Club Car carts, a 1990 with a 4" lift and 22" tires with a plastic utility bed on the back, and a 1987 with a 6" lift, 22.5" tires, and a back seat. Neither one currently has the power spring in the driven clutch. I do just fine when it's just myself, two kids (ages 6 and 9) and my wife. Any more weight than that and the cart will significantly slow down on hills. I live in Ohio so we do have some decent-size hills to climb sometimes.
If I had to carry three or more adults on a regular basis, plus my mildly-hilly terrain, I would probably put the power spring back in. The reason it's out is because the clutch I was running it in started chattering and was noisy. I just never got around to putting it back in my new one.
Do you live in an area with a lot of hills?
what size shaft does that clutch fit , and what size belt does it use?
I'm not sure of the exact shaft size, but all Club Car driven clutches will slide on to pretty much all Club Car DS and Carryall rear ends from 1984-up, probably even more models than that.
But you must make sure that your clutch has the proper directional orientation to the motor you have (counter-clockwise vs clockwise).
1984-87 Club Car DS carts used a narrower 15/16" wide belt. 1988-up Club Car DS carts use a 1" wide belt.
Will the upgraded power spring make the cart go faster? I just bought 2 2016 precedents , they are identical, one will go 18mph and the other will go 26. Same motors. Im just trying to figure out why..... thanks
No it certainly did not make mine go faster. It only shifts the power band slightly so that you have more power for hill climbing. The only thing you should really notice is that you can climb hills that you couldn't before.
With that much of a speed difference between two identical carts, I would imagine that one has a modified governor (likely the zip-tie method) to make it fast, and one has the stock governor setup, which keeps it slow.
A friend I golf with has a Club Car. I believe it's a 1994. There's about a 2 second delay after pressing the pedal before the engine starts to spin over and run. Is that normal? Is that delay caused by the time it takes the starter/generator to spin up before the clutch can engage the engine?
No, it's not supposed to happen, but it's pretty common. One of my carts has done this for a couple of years. The delay doesn't happen every time I hit the gas, but maybe 50-60% of the time. It hasn't been enough of a nuisance to correct just yet.
From what I have come to understand, it's an issue within the armature of the starter/generator (some kind of flat spot) and replacing the s/g with a new one should correct the issue.
If you pop up the seat, and watch the s/g while you're hitting the pedal, you should see the s/g pulley immediately "jump", and then do nothing for a couple of seconds before finally spinning...that's the s/g at fault. If the pulley jumps as soon as you hit the gas, you know it has power to it, and during normal operation it should immediately begin spinning.
@@anthonyfarmer4457 are you sure it’s even starting? Sometimes you may just be watching the starter/generator turn the motor over without firing and it has nothing to do with the clutches.
What size is the input shaft on a 93 club car ds ?
Stock shaft is 30mm 1:10 taper with internal female threads.
Thank you for the vid, i have a 04 ds gas clubcar, it was working fine then it all of a sudden will not go in reverse, it is engaged and the belt just sits as the clutch variator pully spins, so i replaced the belt, and it is still not catching in reverse. I've heard it could be battery, but its a new one and i charged it, im guessing it is in this clutch part or something. I don't know much about them
So it works fine and runs in forward but just not in reverse?
i have the same problem however mine clubcar just continuously spins when on the gas and only every so often does it catch and moves the car forward or reverse for about 10ft or so and gives out again. I’m assuming something inside the clutch hub isn’t engaging to help move the rear axle pulley. Any ideas?
@@superraticalstunts7292 yes if it's engaging at all that means the RPMs are enough to close the variator or pulley bearings not rolling to close the gap to pinch the belt, sounds like you need to replace the rear drive pulley bearing or variator itself
what does the power spring do for you?? Does it give you more power and less speed?
The power spring is stiffer and opens the driven clutch at a slower rate. You’ll lose a bit of torque on the low end in exchange for better hill-climbing power. Think of it like the gears on a 10-speed bike: the power spring keeps your chain on the big gears longer (the gears you use when climbing hills).
@@craigartzner A stiffer spring should simulate "keeping engine in a lower gear" if in a car. U need more torque to climb a hill. A possible side effect is that it's possible that the driven clutch sheaves may not open fully on flat surface if the driving clutch can't over power the stiffer spring. That would cause a lower top speed?
A mate of mine is having trouble getting his ds started! I had a quick look at it for him today and straight away I noticed his negative cables was not properly fastened down to the battery terminal! So I tightened them down and the engine started! I ran in neutral for a few seconds then all of a sudden it started shaking like mad! Could this be the same scenario? 🤔 I will have another look tomorrow and see if there's any play in the clutch!👍 Great content by the way keep it up! Much appreciated. 😁
Same scenario as what exactly? This is just in informational video on what kinds of driven clutches came on older Club cars.
Basically I start the buggy and rev the engine a little then the whole golf cart rattles like crazy! Do you think this could be an issue with the clutch? It has the newer clutch on like in your video and i checked for play side to side but there was no play!?

The thing you keep calling a C-clamp, is actually a Snap-ring. I would suggest using a shop press to push the assembly down vs. a second person.
Well, sure, but not everyone owns or has access to a shop press, but most people have a second person they can grab.

Why would a 2003 gas club car not pull a hill?
Multiple things. Lift and bigger (too big) tires. Too heavily loaded down. The angle of the hill. Bad clutches.
Secondary clutch on mine is the culprit. Helixes have small gouges on them. It has a lot of clutch chatter as well. I'm going to order one for it. $70.00 or so.
