During the Band Aid 20 recording 10 years ago Damon Albarn didn't perform, he made tea for the other stars. He's not taking part this time either and says there's a danger of framing "Africa as this place that's constantly in need of our assistance".

Thank you for the truth about this topic. I generally want to help people in need, but I wonder whether any money I donate actually goes to the people who need help.
thats why I only give money from 1 to 5 euros per months, I am too scared it might go to a purpose I wouldn't support, but if everyone had faith in that little amount of money maybe we would create a world with more solidarity and more transparency.

what is true is that Africa is that place where we need to give emergency aid.. like a baby or a child, that we wouldn't have let grow on their own. For no reason.

yeah but thos pampered artist took an afternoon out of a busy life, i think we should forget for a moment that just one year of there tax evasion could feed water and educate an entire african village for life! REALLY they are doing great work.....wish Damon was not so baked everytime i see him but i think he tried to make a fare point :-)

the point is still being missed. My wife is from Cameroon and its true that they do get pissed off as been generalised and in huge parts of africa they are quite rich , have lots of rain , grow huge amounts of crops. Most of Africa isnt affected by Ebola but the point is that this Ebola crisis is alot more important than cliches and people having their feeling hurt by generalisation. Ebola needs money throwing at it asap and Band Aid will sell alot more copies with well known western singers than unknown African ones. If you ever actually listen to African music then damons take on the genre is pretty cliched itself also
***** Sir, I beg to differ on so many levels, but will only touch on a couple of points.
- The Ebola crisis *won't* just "go away". Evidently that is not the nature of this beast. It will become bigger, spread and cause more devastation if it is not immediately, diligently and effectively countered. Which is why it needs instant funding now. No ifs, and or buts.
- You say "The common person just gives money away without really thinking." That statement is disagreeable. Perhaps it is more true that they do *think* and that's why they give.
Granted, the money and resources arriving to the right people and the intended need is also vitally important. But do you suggest that people must have done culture/psychology courses on various issues or extensive study on international relations before they decide to give money/aid to tackle a ravenous and lethal threat?
In the interest of time/time sensitive and pressing critical status issues, it would be neither prudent, practical or sensible to dither or apply a medium/long term approach to this.
We must think with immediate, mid-term and long-term concepts. We also mustn't ignore to acknowledge tough and valuable lessons learned from the past. Aid is needed to fight Ebola now. We can debate otherwise later.
***** But how do you know that "Bob Geldof and friends haven't learned from the past"? What evidence is there to suggest that? The aid hasn't been collected yet. Let alone delivered. So what lessons are being missed...so far? Collecting the aid in the first place?
The international bodies on the ground fighting Ebola have repeatedly indicated the desperate need for more assistance and funding for resources. This is exactly what Band Aid is addressing. Isn't it?

For the record, I'm a big fan of Damon Albarn and his work with Blur and The Gorillaz. So your baseless, conjugated perception of who I am is pretty far from the truth.
More to the point, there's no denying that he feigned a working class persona while with Blur to make himself more appealing to consumers.

***** Class exists everywhere. In Britain it's normally reflected in the accent which often marks people out. Some celebrities often make themselves sound less posh in order to appear cooler.
Let's face it, the Queen was never going to be and RnB star with that accent :L
