I could listen to him speak for hours. He's extremely intelligent and perceptive. I love that Silent Planet writes songs on topics people wouldn't normally. That's awesome.
I am not a Christian but I cannot dispute anything you have said in this interview. You demonstrate a sensitivity to the scriptures that is so missing from many who preach and are stuck on the specifics rather than the meaning and experience of those words. The only reality is what's inside. Because that is what drives us. I loved every minute of it. And I HAVE checked out Timmy, I happen to be his father. Thanks for the interview!
I'm pretty much an atheist but I love Silent Planet and their lyrics. So much meaning is present compared to most bands. Every song is great! Love the historical, artistic and even the religious references.
Garrett is a beautiful human being. His mind is something that is truly special and fascinating. I'm so thankful that he was given this opportunity and platform in Silent Planet to share his profound thoughts and stories. The band perfectly captures and complements his words with the music. They work so well together as a band.
After listening to this I finally understood what the album's name meant, well done Honestly, as someone who has quite a hard time understanding the meaning behind lyrics in songs, these videos and the sheer care that this band puts behind making sure that the references are noted down helps quite a lot, and the more I learn of about the songs and band, the more respect I gain for everyone in it.
The dude is straight up spitting out the most eloquent words and sentences and values and opinions, all within seconds of another, just describing his bands album. Such a beautiful mind.
Zach Glen I can field this one, it’s the symbol for the band “Oh, Sleeper” and they carry a Christian message. The symbol is a pentagram with the top 2 points missing which represents a devil whose horns have been cut off, thereby being subdued by a warrior of the Father
Their lyricism reminds me a lot of Oh, Sleeper, the way they create a story and often pull from historical events. And I would consider that high praise.
The more i hear him the more i feel that he is so much like me. His ideals, his personality, its weird how similiar we are, i hope that i will grow into a man like him. Hes a great dude, and id love to meet him. Awesome interview, again lol and you have just gained another subscriber.
This guy is a massive newfound inspiration for me considering I am a uni student studying psych who wants to do social work and loves metal and also wants to combine the two worlds somehow or another.
I've never thought of myself as a religious person, but the thought and time he puts into his lyrics move me. I love the story telling and the spirituality behind every song, it's truly artistic and beautiful.
16:00 to 16:30 is such an incredible concept. That's the kind of believer I want to be, in response to wrongness against me. It's such a hard thing to live out, but with Christ in me, to be able to love in spite of, or even because of, wrong done against me is the greatest way to show his glory in my life.
I owe this man so much. He taught me an important lesson of tolerance, how to be a better writer, and the love I felt from him when we first met after their first Melbourne show was so strong. Bless you Gar x
I met Garrett after their set at cvlt fest just a few days ago, in the minute or so I spent with him I felt the purest love exuding from this man. We can all learn a little bit from him, both in spirit and in love. Can't wait for next time they come back to Melbourne
This is an album that the world will never understand....they will never comprehend how beautiful and honest and artistic this is. How deep into the mind of few men it came from. How real this is. They will never appreciate it because their heads are so obsessed with the biebers of the world.... It's a sad fact of life but thank you Russell for this true masterpiece of an album.
I was so blessed to meet Garrett on October 17th on For Today's Awake Tour. Such a humble, Christ centered man. I am excited to see where their music takes them!
This gentleman is incredibly intelligent. I have only experienced a few people that have been able to captivate me with their rhetoric. I feel like I could spend days, just having conversations with him. It is outstanding that he is able to step outside of the normal perspective like he does.
His description of Depths II gave me the chills. I can totally relate - so meaningful to have someone else vocalize thing I've been dealing with privately. Thanks for everything you guys do.
Wow Super Powerful!! Saw them at iMatter 15, there was a lot of hurting souls and SP and many of the bands were there to tell everyone that they Do Matter and not give up.
Wow man! I'm speechless. Even tough i am agnostic, your way of explaining and showing what your belief in God is and what it means to you really showed something good to me. I have also received some conflicting diagnosis about my mind, and this video has managed to show me some love in the world. Something that i also have been isolating myself from, as you said you were for some time. Thank you for this! As others have said, listening to the way you speak about these concepts is marvelous
Wow,a very VERY meaningful band for sure. And I've really only heard "panic room".I think it's time to take that off of repeat and explore more of this amazing band.❤\w/
I've never felt spiritual. I grew up around a multitude of religions, and I tried to learn about all of them. I had the opportunity given to me from my parents of the freedom of choice and full support behind what I would believe in and jump into. I moved to a small town in Texas and I was in a culture I didn't understand...you know? I didn't understand the cult like ideology behind the kids I went to school with and didn't understand what they were so vehemently defending. I didn't understand when I went to the evangelist summer camp why people were crying around the bonfire singing songs to the sky. I thought it was the strangest thing I'd ever seen...and still probably do. The roadblock I come across here is that Garrett proposes that many people are at fault including the people that he should, and his fellows should associate with. It baffles me that for once I see someone who really believes in what they think. It's so refreshing to me that for once they have come to their own thoughts on the matter than hearing some poor soul talk about something he has no idea about. It makes me want to believe. For now...I have so many questions..but it there was anyone else that could make me doubt my own solidarity I would like to meet them. Garrett brings something to the table I have never seen before. He is real.
david currie I want to meet Garrett, too, because I identify with a lot of the thoughts and feelings that Garrett has. And I don't really identify a lot with the teens who "sing bonfire songs to the sky", too. I've always been a skeptic. I am always longing for more peers, more support, more friends who think critically about what they claim is important to them because life frickin matters. We aren't meant to just float blindly through it.
OK - 7 year old thread but brand new to me as of today. I find that whatever you believe I do find that the universe is a crazy, chaotic, amazing... why find it now, today? And how the music somehow instantly spoke to me and brought me here, I at first thought this was someone just doing some kind of review so it is so cool to realize that this is the band's singer actually talking about the songs that they wrote and what they mean and what they mean to him... wow. I wish other bands would do the same, i mean music is such a gift to humanity so how great is it to hear the songwriters talk about where this came from - and how lucky are we to live today with the technology that allows this kind of music to be written and played! Not to mention that the actual music itself, is interesting and complex on it's own. I hope that this band has aged well, like I said, new to me but yea, this video was great, cool dude, awesome band.
I was so amazed when I began listening to "The Night God Slept" that a piece of art made by somebody else could so perfectly slot into exactly what I believe in and so much of what I have gone through. I was waiting for a video such as this one, thanks so much. Also what's on Garrett's arm? Healing a new tattoo or something?
***** That's not the tattoo he's trying to heal. He's had the tattoo you see in firstwake for a while. That tattoo is Silent Planets broken planet logo. He must have gotten another one unless he got a touch up on that one.
Cory Evans I believe that's a brand new one, the last time I saw Garrett (in early December) he didn't have any colored ink on the outside of that arm. That is the same arm as the SP logo, but that tattoo is on the inside of the bicep.
I was expecting people to hate on him for the religion and stuff because its youtube. But everyone is soo nice in the comments I have faith in humanity now
Even though I don't agree with his doctrine in some areas, I think it's really cool to see a video like this. Instead of trying to pick apart everything he's saying, I'll just say I appreciate this and that this band takes some strong stances for what they believe in..
I thought that Darkstrand (Hibakusha) was the best song on the album. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ". He's entirely right, when you are in Christ, there is no American, no Canadian, no African, etc.
Here's the story of Madame Rouffanche that Garrett referenced in Tiny Hands (Au Revoir). www.scrapbookpages.com/Oradour-sur-Glane/Story/Rouffanche.html Interesting to actually read her account.
+Dragon Kunia Not at all dude. Regardless of what "religion" or belief you address yourself as, I think you and I and everyone else is drawn to examples of intelligent and amazing music--which is exactly what the guys in SP create. Their method of applying their beliefs with reason, emotion, and directive into their songs are so profound. I get you, man.
debate below lol...God I pray this guy doesn't do anything messed up like so many people that speak this way end up doing...we need true people...and I believe in him, he spoke on women a way most men can't even think
I don't think you can her work online. Only exerpts here and there. Her name is shown sometimes as Lady Iulia de Beausobre, other times it's Julia de Beausobre and she got remarried later and her last name changed to Namier. There's a Wikipedia page under Julia Namier that will show titles of her work. Libraries or maybe an e-book app would be your best bet in reading her work, though to my acknowldgement.
I think Garrett draws too many issues and wrongs to too little causes. He is somewhat bias and close minded. But I love their music and enjoy the lyrics and the stories
Goddamn it I love your guys band The songs are fuckin awesome But I fucking hate all religion The well to me is you speaking about earth You sound intelligent Hopefully you believe in something real as well Like science
God IS science. You have a very limited view of reality. Hopefully one day your eyes will be opened to the point where you don't differentiate science with God.
I could listen to him speak for hours. He's extremely intelligent and perceptive. I love that Silent Planet writes songs on topics people wouldn't normally. That's awesome.
One of the most intellectual and down to earth people alive today imo
Preach Garrett!! Man that last part is 🙏🏼 we are created in His image.
Man this guy hit the books. Good on him!
"As a christian I give up my identity as anything other than as a follower of Christ" holy crap that just hit me super hard.
I know. That was good
I am not a Christian but I cannot dispute anything you have said in this interview.
I'm the same way, no other band puts as much thought and meaning into their lyrics
100% atheist here, but no other bands talk to me like Silent Planet, they're one of a kind, just incredible
Garrett is a beautiful human being. His mind is something that is truly special and fascinating. I'm so thankful that he was given this opportunity and platform in Silent Planet to share his profound thoughts and stories. The band perfectly captures and complements his words with the music. They work so well together as a band.
As a Native American, I love "Native Blood" and I love how educated he is on the history of the genocide we faced physical and cultural. Thank you!
After listening to this I finally understood what the album's name meant, well done
Honestly, as someone who has quite a hard time understanding the meaning behind lyrics in songs, these videos and the sheer care that this band puts behind making sure that the references are noted down helps quite a lot, and the more I learn of about the songs and band, the more respect I gain for everyone in it.
The dude is straight up spitting out the most eloquent words and sentences and values and opinions, all within seconds of another, just describing his bands album. Such a beautiful mind.
If one wants to witness a true Christian, look no further than this man here.
Love this band.
Him and Mattie from for today are amazing.
+Ryan Whitington Except Garrit doesn't shove it down peoples throats and lets people be themselves unlike mattie lol
Omni Codex Hey, if you wouldnt mind, may I ask you what the symbol of your profile pic means?
Zach Glen I can field this one, it’s the symbol for the band “Oh, Sleeper” and they carry a Christian message. The symbol is a pentagram with the top 2 points missing which represents a devil whose horns have been cut off, thereby being subdued by a warrior of the Father
Holy shit dude how many vids am I gonna find you on today
this dude is so smart and opened minded
Their lyricism reminds me a lot of Oh, Sleeper, the way they create a story and often pull from historical events. And I would consider that high praise.
The more i hear him the more i feel that he is so much like me. His ideals, his personality, its weird how similiar we are, i hope that i will grow into a man like him. Hes a great dude, and id love to meet him. Awesome interview, again lol and you have just gained another subscriber.

Very well-spoken. I may have to check this band out.
+Peyton Weir You should :)
Did you check them out, Peyton?
This is an album that the world will never understand....they will never comprehend how beautiful and honest and artistic this is. How deep into the mind of few men it came from. How real this is. They will never appreciate it because their heads are so obsessed with the biebers of the world.... It's a sad fact of life but thank you Russell for this true masterpiece of an album.
Seeing them for the second time in a month tomorrow. Very stoked to talk with Garrett tomorrow!!!
It was a great time. I miss the SP boys.
I was so blessed to meet Garrett on October 17th on For Today's Awake Tour. Such a humble, Christ centered man. I am excited to see where their music takes them!
I met him too at the wake tour show in Chicago and gave him my beaded cross braclet....such an amazing person!
I absolutely loved this... Love your channel dude, always stoked to see more.
I love this album! I'm so hyped for the future of Silent Planet!
What an amazing human being.
Tim, if you're ever in the Boston area... I need to meet you.
As I said in my other comment; thank you so much for introducing me to this band
Dude definitely! If I'm ever on a tour or visiting, we should for sure get coffee or something man! Again, thanks for the kind words
Listening to this entire thing I feel like I've met Garrett before. Like I'm 99% sure I've met him somewhere.
More singer/songwriters NEED to do this! Thanks Garrett! God bless
I love how, in dept, Garrett writes his lyrics. Oh, and the beautufil instrumentals from the other guys ;)
I still come back and watch this. Thanks for the interview and video. It brings light to an amazing band and story they are telling.
Peace,
Chris
Wow Super Powerful!! Saw them at iMatter 15, there was a lot of hurting souls and SP and many of the bands were there to tell everyone that they Do Matter and not give up.

Really a theological guy. I wish there were more people like him out there. I can't stand people who write lyrics who have little or no meaning...
+Jason LovesABR haha definitely. most of the songwriters in this genre are guilty of this....but definitely fronz....
Blake V000 that or just bands tapping in concepts of personal struggles way to much like break ups, back stabbing and shit
Really cool to hear about Depths II, makes it even more stunning
Excellent video. Great message, great band, what more could you want?
I really need to meet you one day. You inspire me and make me want to keep pushing foward. Please one day.
Super love this video
I super love it too :)
Wow,a very VERY meaningful band for sure. And I've really only heard "panic room".I think it's time to take that off of repeat and explore more of this amazing band.❤\w/
The Night God Slept is SP’s best album!
yess, and its not even close. that album is timeless
I've never felt spiritual. I grew up around a multitude of religions, and I tried to learn about all of them. I had the opportunity given to me from my parents of the freedom of choice and full support behind what I would believe in and jump into. dude your interviews are so sick never stop making them
This guy was probably the best in his high school history class
Man I love you guys
See you in Houston
when he describes his dream. goooooosebumps
damn that was amazing
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA AND SILENT PLANET SHOULD COLLAB
I was so amazed when I began listening to "The Night God Slept" that a piece of art made by somebody else could so perfectly slot into exactly what I believe in and so much of what I have gone through. I was waiting for a video such as this one, thanks so much.
Also what's on Garrett's arm? Healing a new tattoo or something?
Yeah, it is. You can see it in their video for Firstwake =)
***** That's not the tattoo he's trying to heal. He's had the tattoo you see in firstwake for a while. That tattoo is Silent Planets broken planet logo. He must have gotten another one unless he got a touch up on that one.

This needs more views
I was expecting people to hate on him for the religion and stuff because its youtube. But everyone is soo nice in the comments I have faith in humanity now
For anyone who's wondering, Lilith is at 11:59
I was with Garrett when he got that shirt! My buddy own's that company!(:
JustSethy I want the shirt, what is it?
Even though I don't agree with his doctrine in some areas, I think it's really cool to see a video like this.
Instead of trying to pick apart everything he's saying, I'll just say I appreciate this and that this band takes some strong stances for what they believe in..
does anyone know where i can find the autobiography he talked about at the wasteland part?
You can tell by how he talks that he is very intelligent. I would love to have a long conversation with Garrett.
You should do Ben English from Invent, Animate. Their new album drops a week after these dudes. I can't wait.
I like this band too
I'm of Mayan Descent, so technically I'm also native to the Americas. Native Blood is my fav song.
I like how he's wearing a Colossus shirt. XD
Man those 21 minutes flew by
love this dude!
btw anyone know that shirt? is it a merch or?
God, I pray your eyes to see.
I thought that Darkstrand (Hibakusha) was the best song on the album.
"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ". He's entirely right, when you are in Christ, there is no American, no Canadian, no African, etc.
Did he mean Frederick Buechner in I Drowned In The Desert?
This made me want to be a better human being.
What is the song at 15:38 because I can never find it?
I mean I know the song it's just I can never find this music video
Here's the story of Madame Rouffanche that Garrett referenced in Tiny Hands (Au Revoir).
www.scrapbookpages.com/Oradour-sur-Glane/Story/Rouffanche.html
Interesting to actually read her account.
how he talk reminds me of micah, from oh sleeper super smart and so loving of god
Take a shot every time he says "evoke"
Silent Planet is the best band EVER!!!!!
is it weird that I like these guys even though I'm agnostic?
+Dragon Kunia
Not at all dude. Regardless of what "religion" or belief you address yourself as, I think you and I and everyone else is drawn to examples of intelligent and amazing music--which is exactly what the guys in SP create. Their method of applying their beliefs with reason, emotion, and directive into their songs are so profound. I get you, man.
Dragon Kunia Nah man. I’m an Atheist, but I’m a fan of Silent Planet and the positive messages they deliver through their music.
debate below lol...God I pray this guy doesn't do anything messed up like so many people that speak this way end up doing...we need true people...and I believe in him, he spoke on women a way most men can't even think
Where is the music video for Wasteland? I can't find it.
i'm trying to find the lady from Wasteland.. Julia.. something? I've googled so much but to no avail! I want to read her story! D:
I don't think you can her work online. Only exerpts here and there. Her name is shown sometimes as Lady Iulia de Beausobre, other times it's Julia de Beausobre and she got remarried later and her last name changed to Namier. There's a Wikipedia page under Julia Namier that will show titles of her work. Libraries or maybe an e-book app would be your best bet in reading her work, though to my acknowldgement.
Anyone know where I can find info on the event from Tiny Hands? Tried looking it up but found nothing
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oradour-sur-Glane_massacre
native blood is my favorite song 😂
This dude sounds smart af
He has a BA in English and Philosophy and a MA in Clinical Psychology, currently studying Theology
Took me until 14:03 to see this. Facing us, right side above his shoulder. Le face in the tree and sky.
Man this guy is a genius. His brain needs to stored in some facility and needs to be studied. Pretty sure this world would be a better place then
This is amazing. But I dont get why the Album is called “ the night god slept“. Anyone who can explain?
Celebrimbor watch the synopsis also on this channel
cayeminterviews Oh thanks! didnt see the video :)
notice*
God the father...
6:58 what does it have to do with misogyny
He looks kind of like Bones
I think Garrett draws too many issues and wrongs to too little causes. He is somewhat bias and close minded. But I love their music and enjoy the lyrics and the stories
Great video. Really. But good lord, there are a ton of edit points. It gets kind of annoying.
+John Beckwith probably to remove all of the "um's and uhh's"
Interesting. I dont buy all of it but...Interesting
I palm mute for Christ
Underrated comment
Goddamn it
I love your guys band
The songs are fuckin awesome
But I fucking hate all religion
The well to me is you speaking about earth
You sound intelligent
Hopefully you believe in something real as well
Like science
Punk Rock Science cannot explain everything, my friend.
God IS science. You have a very limited view of reality. Hopefully one day your eyes will be opened to the point where you don't differentiate science with God.
Science is a contradiction.
Michael Gonzalez A contradiction to what? You can't just make a declarative statement and then mossy on out of the room. Explain yourself.
