I worked at USIC, and its terrible. All that matters to them is ticket closure, you cant even take break to eat or use the restroom. And like you said, its a sunrise to sunset type of job with mandatory OT.

What are you talking about... I work at USIC and it is a good job. You can take breaks and you do get a lunch break, as for using the restroom, you just have to work that into your route, I just find the closest gas station between the stop I just finished and my next stop. I have had tickets that took a lot of time so I had to make a quick run to the closet restroom, but usually I can take my restroom breaks between tickets.
As for the OT, yes, during the busy times there is mandatory OT, but generally only 10 to 20 hours of OT a week... A 50 to 60 hour work week is not all that unusual for many industries... I personally like the overtime, I like the bigger checks!!!
Of course closing tickets is important to them... That is what the locating business is about. Also, other contractors can't do their work until we get our job done.
However, USIC does care about more than just closing tickets, I just got my new truck, I have top of the line locating equipment, they gave me cooling towels, cooling hat, wasp spray, bug repellent and other stuff for working outdoors in the hot weather, my Supervisor has stopped by where I was locating to make sure I have cold water, he always gives me those electrolyte packets and we sit on the tailgate and chat for a bit... so yes we get breaks... besides the fact that we are in our trucks between tickets, which to me is also like a little break.
Locating utilities is not hard work, certainly when I compare it to when I worked in construction as a framer, and I actually don't think it is as hard of work as landscaping or lawn mowing. Once you learn the process, it is really pretty much a walk in the park, except you are not in a park.. I love being a Locator and I am pleased with USIC,

@@brendapudvah8921 "Locating utilities is not hard work" Course it's not really hard when you are used to the process on reading the records verify(toning) and marking it out. But it really depends on what and where you are locating.
For me I mark public bell, gas, and hydro. I have an easier time marking gas then the other 2. Mainly because most of the records and tone is good. But bell their records as they say is "just a guide" meaning there might be bell not on the records on site. As well the tone for bell bleeds onto the other utility's such as gas.
For me getting a dead zone on the gas, and having to escalate to my supervisor. Decreases my output on a project (cause I've got to continue locating the project checking for anymore problems knowing I'm not goin to complete it that day).
But I got to say the hardest for me is marking the road and an intersection. Since we are pretty focus on our tone, we don't know what going on around us. I always park my car and keep my beacon and hazard lights on and take all my cones out when I need to mark along the road, and i still get people thinking I do this for fun Like I am not working. Always dressed like a walking bright cone how can you see what I doing.
One of my supervisors said he got hit by a car while working a bit at a meeting. But he said he was alright. I can see myself or at least my dash cam, see me getting hit by a car, or something.
Least for me it's not a walk in a park even though you might drive in a park.

I have applied for this position 4 other time previously along with others like being a mail man or a utility locator for a different company.
I dont want to work at Taco Bell just because they accept a questional plethora of applicants in my town.

USIC is not a good option. Much better career choice would be Subsurface Utility Engineering. Still designating utilities but it is an actual career.
