When you’re pushing the physical components of the preamp and that harmonic saturation is being recorded and played back on tape… there is just no way a digital algorithm is gonna be able to replicate the unpredictability and nuance of it! Doesn’t sound bad but like… it is just a world apart
It’s kind of unbelievable that everyone here, including Matt (the guy in the video), is missing the point of the settings “Age” and “Saturation.” The 202 will be brighter and cleaner than the 201 UNLESS you turn on the “age” setting AND the “saturation” setting. The tape, even if recently serviced, is going to be aged, so set the TAPE function to “aged.” Also, you see the 201 is being overdriven consistently, as evidenced by the VU meter; to match, increase the saturation. These are basic functions of the 202 and a serious mistake overlooking those two settings; also, those are the two settings NOT available on the smaller RE-2. This oversight causes a big ol’ thumbs down!
Yeah… your sort of right… but also wrong… the aged button and the saturation only effects the echos on the 202…. Where driving the 201 effects the whole signal… direct and echos… it’d be awesome if you could make the saturation effect the guitar as well… not just the echos… I’m deep diving now to see if you can route the signal that way…. I’ll keep you posted!!!
I think the difference is pretty noticeable pedal repeats sound kind of sterile and digital.. kinda disappointed😅 the roland has a warmer and more pillow like feel
You have a similar outcome to the Reverb youtube comparison video with that super overdriven warm preamp twang, the Boss RE-202 can't compete with the real thing... but I've heard other demos with a clean sounding guitar and the Boss RE-202 sounds amazing, very ambient and lush... not that overdriven sound... So I guess it depends on what you want to use the BOSS for, I'm definitely buying one!
Nice comparison. RE-201 kicks the 202's ass. I wish companies like Roland would bring us products that are superior to things they did decades ago, but the controllers want a digital world, and ones and zeros/emulations will never be superior to the real thing.
I don’t like it when people say this or that is way better etc. do these people think every 201 sounds exactly the same for starters? Lol! The latest stuff is small, stick it on your board! No maintenance fees! it’s good to have them
This is really strange, this is the only demo that makes the Re202 sound very, very far away from the original. Not criticising your demo or anything but I owned the original for over a decade and a re20 as well as just getting this new one...the re20 was quite far away but this new one does defo get in the ballpark. I was also glad to get shut of the re201 as it was an absolute pain in the arse to keep running... In fact, there is a guy in Oz who clones the re201, I bought a maintenance kit from him to help keep mine in good running order. Seeing horrendous stories with fascist cops beating up people Down Under, coupled with totalitarian politicians, sounds like hell, you all have my thoughts. Greets from Switzerland
Yep. Exactly… especially the preamp section… my 201 sounds completely different from channel to channel???? One is bassy one is punchy and clear… and one saturates really nicely…

I agree!
We agree too
But the pedal is not tooooooo far off
@@thepedalpicassos in another video i’ve heard one say it’s replication only the saturation from the preamp not the tape being pushed.

@@thepedalpicassos no it doesn’t. You can set it either way
Facts! Thank you for pointing this out. Saturation needs to go way up on the 202 to start sound like the 201 here, and definitely set to aged tape.
Excellent demo and playing😊
Thank you kindly!
I was hoping you would do this exact demo 🎸
I just bought one of you T-shirts… I’m gonna wear it on a video as soon as it shows up!!!!
@@thepedalpicassos thank you so much 👍

Exactly.
I reckon with some tweaking I’ll get close… I just need more time with the 202

Yep! Agreed! I just with the new Roland would let me drive the pre amp section... like the old 201
To me the 201 is a real oil painting and the 202 a printed shiny cheap poster of it. They show the same picture but they are worlds apart.
Yep… ha ha ha. Although… after I had the boss for a few months… I got a way better sound out of it!

The 201 would be different with each unit. Where as the 202 would be consistent and a hell of a lot lighter.

You’re so good looking!
Thanks! You’re a bit of a spunk yourself!! Xxx
BOTH sound good, in different ways, but AREN'T really alike!
Roland get it all wrong once again! Worlds apart from the original.
The 202 is shameful. Ooof.
I really need to have a good play with it… but the 201 has a beautiful warm pre-amp…
@@thepedalpicassos Ed Pettersen did a video recommending stuff like always leaving the preamp on and using the tape age, I believe.

Honestly your 201 needs to be serviced lol
I just did a video last week!!! It’s had a service!!
