She could totally do a six degrees of kevin bacon book version. Like pick one book and than another book at the different end of the spectrum and see if you can book rec your way from one end to the other. I'd like to see that @lala
Oooo I like how you paired contemporaries with thrillers! I’ve never seen people do such a huge span in genre, usually these videos compare the same genres 🤪
Sorry, you're going through a stressful time. I really hope you're okay and feeling better soon. Thanks for all the wonderful book recommendations. Sending virtual hugs.
When you started doing cross-genre recommendations, I started wondering why we don’t have fantasy/thriller books (to my knowledge). It’s probably because the world building/mystery building might be a little too much to cram into one book, but now I’m trying to stretch my brain to come up with an idea for one!
Shadow_Owl242 but there are a lot of fantasy books who have a mystery plot line like murder or a missing person. All those books just fall in the fantasy genre.
If you're looking for fantasy thrillers you should check out books by Bryan Camp. He wrote City of Lost Fortunes and Gather the Fortunes which are the first two books in a think a series, no positive there will be more books.
You’re so right about Night Film being similar to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I read Seven Husbands specifically because I felt like it would have similar vibes to Night Film (my favorite book of all time), so it was cool to see that you felt the same way.
Interesting commentary since you nicely entice with key details and descriptions without giving away spoilers. Nice personality since I find it welcoming and very clear with your explanations which helps potential readers decide whether to read examples. As a composer of original music themes for book trailers that are performed on the guitar, I like notes such as yours since your analysis of events help one write narratives for book trailers that promote stories that hint at events and seek to entice. Very thankful and wish you feel better.
Thank you! I have been searching for books like Sadie ever since I finished reading it. I will definitely check out your recommendations as soon as possible !👏🏻
So happy to see you on my feed. Hope you feel better soon, and stay safe! I loved how you cross combined the 2 genres like this. Definitely will be helpful for people wanting to get into thrillers, but not sure where to start.
I love this idea for recs! For wilderness-based thrillers, I'd recommend Bearskin by James A McLaughlin. It's pretty strange and slow paced, but I loved it when I read it and I feel like it went under the radar. I hope you feel better soon.
Long Bright River by Liz Moore is a good sister vibes thriller. It’s about a woman who’s a cop discovers that there is a serial killer in her area right when her struggling addict sister goes missing. I very much enjoyed it!
I hope you're feeling better soon! The book S has a similar vibe to Night Film in that it has a fictional creative (in this case an author) and their works at its core. And the mention of Pessl's book reminded me that her Special Topics in Calamity Physics has a similar feel to The Secret History. I also feel like Tana French's The Likeness fits in that general vibe in some ways.
A new book that is very comparable to Sadie is The Sun Down Motel! In The Sun Down Motel, we have two perspectives that are set in different times. One of the girls goes missing in 1982, the other is her niece who’s trying to find out what happened to her in 2017. Also, if you like the podcast thing, try Are You Sleeping?. This one is a series on Apple+ now, the show is called Truth be Told.
Deep dark secrets by Keri Beevis...WOW. Loved it. Came out in Jan 2020 but one of those books that i never hear anyone talk about and has gone under the radar. It deserves to get recognition before the end of 2020.
Thank you for your efforts Kayla. 💗 I know in my personal experience that the second I start feeling bogged down and stagnant mentally and emotionally, I just want to lay down and do absolutely nothing because everything becomes a chore. Even though I know that's just going to make things worse. I hope things start moving forward and looking up for you. Great video! I enjoyed watching the process of you picking one or few aspects of a book and which other book your brain connected with it.
Omg, thanks for the upload! And this is such a creative idea, especially for people that are new to thriller. I hope you can feel better soon and take care of yourself!
If you like detective stories, may I recommend the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith. First one is Cuckoo's Calling, not the best book in the series but a solid start!
Funny! I immediately thought of 'Night Film' when you showed 'Evelyn Hugo'! 😊 Also, I read (finished two days ago) 'Six Stories' by your recommendation and *loved it*.
Love this! Thank you for all the recommendations! I read 5 out of 10 of these books that you made recommendations for, so I’m excited to look into these mystery/thrillers!❤️
Thank you for these recommendations, very new to thrillers as a genre. Loved the Raven Boys and I actually have The Secret History on my shelves so now I should probably go and try to read it!
When you talked about Since You’ve Been Gone it made me think of The Last Equation of Isaac Severy. I just finished that book and it wasn’t my favorite, but it was fairly well done and it was a quick read. It was definitely more on the mystery side of the genre though than thriller.
This is such a cool video idea I love it!! 🥰 I never would’ve thought to compare Since You’ve Been Gone with He Will Be My Ruin but after you explained it I was like yeah that makes sense haha
I’m actually reading The Giver with my son for school. Well online school we are in NYC and schools are closed indefinitely we don’t know when they will reopen. He is in fifth grade and I remember my daughter also reading it when she was in fifth grade about 3 years ago and she loved it. Hoping he does as well. Thanks for the recommendations 😊
Another book I recommend with the nanny vibes is "The Ruining" by Anna Collomore. I read it 7 years ago, but I remember it being very intriguing, and I obviously still recall it when you mentioned the subject of being a nanny to a weird family of sorts. :)
The readalikes videos keep coming in on BookTube lately, I love them! I'm doing a bunch of blog posts like that, so this is such great material for me to try out!
I didn’t love the seven husbands of evelyn hugo but I am so curious about Night Film, one of Pessl’s novel became my favorite of this year, so we’ll see! Hope you feel better soon, please take care!! 💓
Just read He Will Be My Ruin last night (before seeing this vid) and really enjoyed it. Liked A Monster Calls, LOVED Imaginary Friend and The Giver, hated the ending in Turn of the Key, and DNF’d Evelyn Hugo at 30%. Lock Every Door, Whisper Man, Last Time I Lied , The Family Upstairs, The Other People, Eight Perfect Murders, The One and Inspection are already on my TBR. Thanks Kayla, for clueing me in on Wendy Walker, Gilly MacMillan and Kimberly McCreight.
I love this! I have been wanting to read more mystery/thriller books. It's funny because I love crime shows like Criminal Minds, Bones, NCIS, etc but I rarely read books of the same nature. I tend to read a lot of Fantasy and some SCi-fi but I really want to get outside of that this year some. I have been wanting to try Lock Every Door, it seems really interesting. I keep seeing the Whisper Man on Book Outlet and have been tempted to pick it up, I may just have to put it on my next order.
I love those shows to ' bones is based on a book it's by kathy reichs I'm currently trying to pick them all up as I see them' so not sure if there any good yet
@@averihobbs4649 its crazy right, like I love crime shows. I have a masters degree with Legal studies with a specialization in Criminology so really I should read more 😂 I do like to read true crime though
Try sci-if thrillers first!!!! I would recommend John Marrs’ The One and The Passengers first. Then you can check out Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter and Recursion. Also, you can’t miss The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle! That is a masterpiece and a specimen of sci-fi/thriller/mystery crossover.
I’m glad you included since you’ve been gone because I recently hauled it (found at a thrift store) and now I’m excited to read it and ALSO read the thriller you recommended to see if I do enjoy both :)
I actually picked up the Secret History of Donna Tart from the library without really knowing why. I had booked it as well, so I assumed that there was a reason even though I also couldn't remember what it was about until this video. Definitely one of the books I'm gonna get to soon!
i keep watching your thriller recs, adding books to my TBR and never actually reading them 😂 but i really want to!! Eight Perfect Murders is my next audiobook though so we're finally getting somewhere
This was so friggin helpful, thanks so much! I've recently realised that I actually still like reading but my tastes have changed so I'm trying to explore genres, especially mystery/thrillers! Can't believe my luck rly
love this! ✨thank you for the recommendations. i love both the YA & mystery/thriller genres ~ some of these i haven’t read yet, but may pair some up to read in my downtime 💕
If you liked Sadie, the adult fiction TWIN that also has a true crime podcast is Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber! I read it a while ago but then saw that bookofthemonth redid the cover and released it! Six Stories is so underrated!
I thought of Don't You Cry for Since You've Been Gone as well! 😄 I will definitely have to check out He Will Be My Ruin. I needed this video, thank you!
So for those that (especially) like "survival" type thrillers, you could check out Michael Koryta's Those Who Wish ME Dead. Story revolves around a 14-y boy who is witness to a murder and taken into a witness protection program. However, the two killers who are trying to find him, knows his identity and gets a wiff of him when the boy is enlisted into a "wilderness skills program" in the Montana mountains. Fast-paced with good characters.
I hope you feel better soon. You’re the only one I get my book recommendations from but oh my I literally just added all of these to my good reads 🤦🏽♀️ help!
Loved the video. I've read some of the books recommended already (many thanks to you). In the friendship theme, I'd also recommend The Hunting Party. A group of friends reunite every year and this time one of them is murdered. You have to figure out who's the victim and who's the perpetrator. It's fun.
i found a dark academia game book that sounds very interesting. i haven't read it yet myself but thought i'd let you know cause i know you like that stuff too it's "Black Chalk" by Christopher J. Yates the tag line is: One Game. Six Students. Five Survivors. and i'm just so excited about it
Hi! I love your videos. Also that shade of hair color really suits you. You could tell me what color do you use? I wish to dye my hair the same tone, please and thank you :)
Ooh I loved Night Film and actually do have the audiobook downloaded of Evelyn Hugo but when I started it I thought it did seem like could be really good but just wasn't in the mood for it but now you've made that comparison it's bumped it back up my list! Also interested in Eight Perfect Murders, I looked it up and it mentions in the description one of the murders is from A Secret History. Now that's one book I feel I am gonna love and have it but just haven't got to it yet. Incase I go for Eight Perfect Murders first, does it spoil it??
So happy that you didn't recommend The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle for people who liked The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, the first have some problematic things, and IN MY OPINION, should never be related to Evelyn Hugo, (beside the title), NIGHT FILM is so good, nice job, love ur videos.
You NEED to read Here to Stay by Mark Edwards. So great! Also maybe The Secrets of Lost Stones by Melissa Payne, mystery with a magical twist pretty great.

JD Robb has a mystery series that is also science fiction. All the books are set in 2056 I want to say
Wow that sounds great....whats the name of the series? Thx for the rec.
JD Rob series still searching.
Thank you so much Kayla for continuing to upload videos and keeping us company during these difficult times!

I got so excited seeing Simon in the beginning there cause it's my fav and I wanted that thriller rec based on it. Maybe next time?

Summer camp thrillers were something I never knew I wanted! I'll definitely check out I'll Never Tell and The Last Time I Lied! Great video!
