  • Tubeless tire setups can be lighter, faster, and more resistant to flats! Electric bikes are no exception and can also benefit from tubeless setups. I explain why they have less rolling resistance, how they work for flat resistance, and show how to do the conversion.

    The very first day I went out for a ride on my e-bike I headed to some dirt roads here in Petaluma to see how well my new mountain e-bike would perform, it performed great but for both tires getting flat because of goat heads. I kept the tubes but added sealant into the tubes rather than get tubeless rims and tires since I couldn't afford them, after adding sealant I haven't had a flat since. BTW I used Green slime since it was available at most auto part stores. Since than I went with another brand, but you can do your own research. Having said that if you can afford tubeless rims and tires, get them, well worth the cost and performance.

      I have a 1.5kw Senada Saber first with the 26x4” stock tires and now with 26x3.5” Vee Speedsters (30TPI tube ready) I have 5 tubes laying around that can be patched and reused. I’m sooo tired of having to randomly change a tube, although I can do the whole process in 5-7 minutes now. Tubeless seems like the way to go as I wouldn’t have to remove the wheel to quickly fix a flat tire - which is the biggest advantage in my opinion.

    I think this was a very illuminating video, I'm sure there are a few guys who would have liked to see this done last year, when they were deciding whether or not to go tubeless, but a good video, none the less. Also, when I was trying to decide for myself, there were videos were they showed the person doing the conversion doing a light bounce as they rotated the tire after doing the horizontal rolling movement, this might helps get the liquid to all the little nooks and crannies quicker, maybe. Again thank you for another very enlightening video.

    Your ebike's motor has probably reached it's full speed on flat surface, so getting tubeless wont improve this much.
    But... Tubeless could potentially affect tire diameter
    + lower rolling resistance from lack of innertube, but Minus is micro resistance of sealant.
    + lower rotational mass, faster acceleration and breaking
    + lower overall ebike's mass, so faster on uphill
    and If I'm not mistaken rolling ressistance is affected by weight, so 1-3% less rolling resistance just from lower gravitational force exerted on tire.
    Like you said, lighter bike, more puncture resistant, less friction=power efficiency.
    Only downside is compatibility, price, need for refill sealant sometimes and more frequent pumping.

  • @blakeberlin6295

    Very helpful. I've changed lots of motorcycle tires and tubes, but going to a tubeless bike setup is new. I really like the suggestion of reinstalling the tube after applying the sealing tape. It is a small hassle, but it seems to be a very worthwhile upfront effort.
    Regarding the air source, would CO2 cartridges provide enough of an air "rush" if one doesn't have a compressor? I may try it, but I suspect I need to either get a compressor or go somewhere that I can access one.

    My question would be concerning mag wheels which really should accept a tubless tire conversion. Have you ever tried this conversion?

  • @ezl8002
    @ezl8002 3 роки тому

    What is funny about a tube tire the worse scenario is a spoke puncture which I had happen on a 26x2.125" tube. The tire had Green Slime in it and that sealant would
    not seal against it. I removed the tube and use a wrap of black electrical tape around the rim and replaced the tube with a new tube that had the Green Slime in it.
    I never had problems after that with the the rim and eventually went with mag wheels which have sealed bearings. This bike had a 212cc Predator engine on it and
    a standard spoked wheel would never hold up under the power from this engine. A solution would be which is better is to go to motorcycle rims and DOT rated tires.
    I would say that from my persoanal experience that the mag wheels with sealed bearings are a winner since I've ran this same bike over 3 years with no problems
    with the tires except the rear tire wears faster than the front tire since some of the rural roads are chipped during the summer and believe it or not, the front tire
    will probably last another year with well over 5k of miles on it.

    • @captaincaveman8532
      @captaincaveman8532 3 роки тому

      It shouldn't effect rolling resistance but it does weigh the bike down reducing range. I'm not particularly a big fan of dual hub motors personally. They do good for traction in a straight line but can get squirrely on turns, especially on slick terrain like wet roads or gravel. Essentially when you turn the wheel they become opposing forces and make it easier for your front tire to slip out from under you. If you are doing dual motors I would suggest a rear hub + mid drive setup.

    All the fat tires on my ebikes are pretty loose once on the rim, the tire can be mounted by hand no tool required. Vtuvia, Lectric, Himiway are all the same way. I don't think there would be a way to seat the tire without the tube. I put sealant in all the tires and had to lift the wheel off the ground so when tube filled up it seated the tire evenly.

    You forgot to say, after installing the tape you need to make a hole where the valve is so the air can go through

  • @TheScreamingFrog916
    @TheScreamingFrog916 2 роки тому +10

    If you forget to check tire pressure, it will get low and sealer leaks out.
    You have to add more sealer, regularly because it dries out inside of tire.
    If you lose pressure on ride, and bead separates from rim, you need special high volume air supply to refill.
    You need special rims and tires.
    To much hassle for me, will stick with tubes.

  • @grey-adventures
    @grey-adventures 2 місяці тому

    Several important steps were missed in this video. Rims should be cleaned with alcohol and a clean cloth before installing the tape. When installing the tape, pull tight to minimize air pockets and rotate wheel in the direction of travel. Apply 6" at a time and press out the air bubbles from the center to the edges. Start the tape opposite of the valve stem hole and overlap about 6" at the end. You also want tape about 5mm wider than the inner rim width so it goes up the edge a little on each side and can seat into the spoke channel. Cut excess tape from valve stem hole being careful not to damage tape inside the rim. The 4oz of sealant used in the video is not enough for a fat bike. Use 4 oz for MTB and 8 oz for full size fat tire.

      1. With Tannus you have run flat ability.
      2. Tannus is heavier.
      3. Never had a flat with Tannus Armor. 1000+ miles now.
      4. When your tire wears out you can move armor to your next set.
      5. Tannus provides a softer ride. More "suspension" if you will.
      6. Slime etc al in a regular tube gives equal "flat prevention.
      If your getting snake bite flats or sliced valves you are running under pressure anyway. Stop it.

    You can take her oodles from a bicycle and use it as a tubeless tire you just all you do is take the end and get it right at what the inches are supposed to be cut it off take a piece plug up the holes on each side glue them together wait till they dry and then put it in there and if you need any extra like green that green slime stuff you put it in there and it works as a and it's one of those oodles those that the baby swim on you know it's called the oodle you know it's what it is what it is and it's it's just anyway if food for thought you could try that on these tires that do not carry the all rubber tubes this is what one guy has came up with but I didn't get the end to see the end of his as far as him writing it to see if it worked but he'd made it looked pretty good to me from what I saw anyway could you try one of those thank you bye

    The funniest thing ever one of my friends.
    Bought a £3,000 bike in a shop.
    The first thing he bought was inner tubes to put in because it was tubeless LOL 😂..
    All he done is unbalanced the wheels and added more weight.
    And now when he gets a Neil or something sharp in he's tyre.
    He needs to push the bike home and fix the flat tyre LOL

    Yeah I think you need at least 8oz of sealant, no way any puncture will get fixed with just 2oz on a 4in tire. Mountain bikes use at least 3-4 Oz for a 27in / 29in 2.3 wide tire.

    How do people get flat tires on their ebike.
    I've had my ebike for almost 1 years now.
    I ride it every single day.
    When I built it I bought the cheapest tyre I could find =£9.50.
    I've never ever had a flat tire front or back.
    And it's very heavy
    With two big battery packs
    And 1000-watt gearless hub motor.

    nope, no way...sorry but gotta call you out on being able to run lower pressure in tubeless tires. tubeless and low pressure is bad because of the danger of popping the bead and dumping your air, tubes win this round EVERY time. If you hit something hard enough to "snake bite" the tube you probably would have blown the bead too. Ask anyone who plays in the sand or mud or races off road about this, Low pressure and tubeless equals flat tires. AND.....come on man, weighing two different bikes to make a weight saving claim? weak man, really weak. give us the actual weight of the tubes and the weight of the tape and any glues used to mount the tubeless tires....ACTUAL weights, not some mythical differences between different bikes when the bikes probably didn't weigh within the same to begin with. Sorry to rip into the video like this

    Now, lets find the way to make them lighter?

  • @eastwood111
    @eastwood111 3 роки тому +1

    Tubeless is a good option for E bikes but telling people it’s going to make it faster and give them more range is nonsense! You’re talking about under 5 pounds and that is not going to affect the range or top speed in any significant way. I think tubeless is a great option but simply to avoid flats. Now on a regular mountain bike going tubeless making it slightly lighter actually will help you but not compared to a heavy fat tire bike. Come on dude let’s inform people with truth and not sugarcoat it.
    Edit:
    As an example I weigh 180 pounds and the top speed of my 2000w E bike is 40mph. When my girl rides my bike which only weighs 130 pounds it doesn’t affect the top speed or range at all and that’s a 50 pound difference!

  • @lc7192

    Ridiculous video. Why not just weigh the tubes individually to come up with the weight savings. Saving three pounds and constantly losing air is not an advantage. Three pounds is hardly perceptible on an ebike. My wife weighs less than I do and we can both go the same speed and have the same endurance on our class 2 ebikes. You can fix a tube flat without having to take the tire off the rim. Also putting run flat or slime in a tube is a lot less messy when it’s in a tube than when it’s in a tire when you need to take the tire off the rim.
