Thank you, John and Mary, for writing the first book I read on the subject, "The McDougall Plan" in the early 80s. I decided to do Macrobiotics which is vegan, but just to say, I couldn't get the idea that the potato was something I could adopt. I had struggled with my weight my whole life, and still thought I knew more. You were right. In the long run, after using dairy again, I eventually returned to the McDougall Plan as I found myself again fat and sick. Now I'm carrying 80 lbs less and have overcome a lot of health concerns. Thank you again for saving me from myself. Lynn

Tip: If you want to make a low fat peanut sauce I recommend using powdered peanut butter -- it has around 90% less fat compared to regular peanut butter without sacrificing creaminess or flavor. (I've made this low-fat version on top of an asian stir-fry with some teriyaki sauce and it was heaven!)

@@JoAnn_Vegan_USA ... we don't weigh and measure, dont restrict, or portion our food. That's the old diet mentality. Just eat the foods Dr McDougall outlines in the free plan on his website (same as The Starch Solution) and you'll be good to go. We eat till comfortably full, and eat again when hungry. Never knew what that was till I practiced it. Stay away from any one who restricts or portions. You never learn how to eat in a healthy way with that kind of thinking.

The potato was pushed, because wheat was harder to come by and reserved for the troops more than anyone else. General slogans of "eat spuds if they are on the table, before slicing bread" were used. Plus you could literally grow potatoes in your back yards and community gardens, even on your balconies, opposed to wheat.
They also recommended to have chickens for eggs and meat and also rabbits. Rabbits were small, ate grass and such and multiplied very quickly.
They also pushed for margin, as a substitute for both butter and lard. However margin is worse than both. But at the time it was not known or at least publicly. Regardless in short spats it was ok, just to get through the harder times of restrictions.
So as you can see, as you are very well aware, just because the government pushes for something, doesn't mean it is healthy long term. Or that it fits your ideas of health or humane treatment of animals.

Watch some Home Grown Veg videos and see how easy it is.

I make my own potting soil but any store bought potting mix will do.
I grow determinate varieties in buckets and indeterminants in raised beds.

Love that talk on blood sugars. That carbohydrate aka SUGAR makes you MORE insulin sensitive! Coming from brainwashed keto/carnivore eating to this way of eating. Eating that old way, I watched my morning blood sugars steadily rise, to where I was 105-110 in the mornings. I did that crap for a good 12 months or so. Eventually things started happening that indicated this was not right….😓Now in the past two weeks, I’ve watched my morning blood sugars go from over 100 to 97, to 91, to 86 and this morning, 82👌🏼
I don’t take my glucose every morning, I’m not a diabetic. Just an ER nurse who likes to know her numbers 🙂so I take my blood glucose every once a while for funsies. And I was well on my way to insulin resistance with that old way of eating that was LOOWWWW carbohydrate and very high in protein and fat from dead animals 😖I wish I could undo it but I can only move forward. And man it feels good. I’ve lost , what feels like, a whole systemic level of inflammation. My sleep has gotten so much better. Upon rising, I am just in a good mood. Nice waves of well being all day. Workouts and running seem less hard! Which is making me push harder/longer/faster! But I feel light and agile! My face, fingers, wrists and legs are much less puffy. Was gassy and diarrhea at first but now have normalized I feel and nice BMs in the morning and tummy feels no bloating at all. Digestion getting optimized! Grateful for this man and all he’s done. Also Healthy Emmie on youtube! Check her out y’all! Potato on my people!😘🥔

I started growing potatoes last Sept and I grew them through the winter.
I grow mine in 5 gallon buckets set in Kidde Pools filled with mulch.
I drill holes around the bottom of the pools so they will hold a little water but not much. I put lots of holes in my buckets.
I put tomato cages on my buckets to help the plants stand up so they get plenty of air flow.
I put 2x4x36 welded wire fencing around the pools to keep critters out of my buckets. I winter I hang clear plastic over the fencing. I hang reflective foil faced insulation inside the fencing on the north side of the pools to concentrate and reflect the sun light back onto the plants.
On freezing nights I put clear plastic over the pools secured with spring clips.
Now I am going to see if I can keep them growing through the summer.

I buy only organic potatoes and do my very best to clean them thoroughly before cooking, it's impossible to remove every particle of soil, so my question is what happens to these microscopic & barley discernable particles within the skin when they enter the body, does the body absorb them or flush them out! Thanks!

What do you think about the new oxalate and purine scare?

I haven't had a chance to watch all of this. Do you address oxalates in potatoes? My bf has been told not to eat potatoes because he's a kidney stone former. He (unlike me) still eats some meat (mostly chicken). Any ideas on this? Thanks in advance!

I really hope a starchy plant based diet can help me to regain my health.
A high saturated fat an cholesterol LCHF diet caused me to develop angina. I'm most certain that I have plaques in my arteries now.
Turns out I have the APOE4 allele with cholesterol hyperabsorption, so LDL particles from saturated fats oxidize even more and my body sucks up cholesterol and cannot get rid of it.
I even got reprimanded by Lindsay Taylor who is an administrator on Mark Sisson's Keto Reset Facebook page for recommending that people who do not do well with saturated fats replace them with olive oil and fish.
I never liked olive oil or fish, but I loved sweet potatoes and beans.
I went on a low carbohydrate diet many years ago because a low fat diet was not able to treat my acne. New breakouts every day and left behind scarring. If only that had not been the case, I would never have gone for the low carbohydrate diet.

I bought a membership at Costco here in Toronto, ON Canada for the sole reason of buying my organic starches - only to discover that they do NOT sell organic potatoes or rice at Costco:(! I probably should have checked before I bought the membership but I have heard Dr. McDougall often say they buy their potatoes & rice there & I just assumed he & Mary would be buying organic produce. Since potatoes have recently been added to the "dirty dozen" I really feel that organic is the only way to go. Thank you for another wonderful lecture Dr. McDougall.

Dr. Mcdougall I use hydrolyzed collagen powder in my coffee. Is that a bad idea? I have a really bad back and I was told that it would help with the cartilage of my bones as I was told from my doctor that I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis? What are your thoughts on the topic?

Here's a couple of video clips by Dr. Klaper [who is also a plant based doc] 1st; about collagen boosting foods. Our bodies make collagen; we only need about 9 amino acids from the foods we eat; our bodies make the rest of the amino acids and form them into proteins. 2nd; With bone strength, bones, like muscles, get stronger with use; if you do some weight training [even with light weights] that will stimulate your bones to become stronger. hope this helps : )

If you really follow the McDougall diet it can help your total healing very much. Eventually you can listen to Dr Michael Greger also , but the easiest and really basisk solution is organic whole plant Based with focus on the starch solution such as discibed so Well from dr McDougall 💚💚💚

Easy to make hash browns using fresh potatoes. Peel and put in food processor shredder. Put into frying pan with a little water and "fry" away.

It's true to a point, but carbohydrate in the form of glucose not fructose. As Pritikin noted one negative aspect of a carb only diet of (potatoes, molasses etc) was stedily RISING triglycerides. Higher triglycerides are indeed a risk factor for heart disease (Rosenman) almost every study confirms that as trigs are blood fats. I'm sure that a high carb diet does improve insulin sensitivity but humans do require some fats as well.

    • @l21n18

There’s no such thing as a carb only diet eating real foods, potatoes are not the same as simple sugars and they contain proteins and fats. Funny too because the diet you’re decrying does quite well for heart disease. The only way you could east a carb only diet would be to only eat simple sugars.

In your introduction, you say "protein is dangerous. it's always in excess. It's never too little." Then in your first slide on the potato, entitled "protein = ideal nutrition," you list what presumably are the virtues of protein, and among them you list "loads of protein and calcium." So, I'm confused by the contradiction. On the one hand, protein is dangerous, and on the other it's one of the virtues of the potato. Please clarify.
