  • What is going on at a dog show, how do they work? I break down (in a quick fashion) what classes are showing and in what order in the dog show. And why some dogs go back in and who wins points (Winners Dog and Winners Bitch) and who competes for Best of Breed. Then how do the groups work and who competes for Best in Show. Anyone is welcome to come to your local dog show and talk with breeders and meet dogs. Feel free to ask any questions!!

Thank you for the video. You did a great job explaining this. I will share this for others to watch and learn about the process that is confusing for non-show people or beginners. Thank you!

When I was a kid I loved watching dog shows and would giggle anytime they would say "bitches" i am now a full grown adult and still giggle when they say "bitches" at shows lol.

Stacey ..do you have and can you do an introductory video showing people what to expect if they were to show their own dog. Something that starts with "Here we are at ringside" and here Iam going in and out of the ring more than once, and what that all means to a newbie.. and then ends with "Then judge hands out the ribbons for BOB BOS etc and that breed's judging is done...also a bit about ring procedure ...where do I stand, proper ring etiquette with other handlers, and the judge. etc.

Great Idea! I can work on this, of course all shows are canceled right now, but I will see if I can recreate them. But ring etiquette etc, I can easily cover!

Totally off topic: Where was this filmed? Love the set-up. And the mountains in the background remind me of my hometown (San Bernardino).

Wish you could explain the Select Dog and Select Bitch Where are they in the line up. Are they champions already. . Have been out of the ring for quite a while...this is relatively new

Ahh, yes the select points. I will try the cliff notes version, but for details for specifics you will need to go to akc.org. In Best of Breed the judge can award a Select Dog and Select Bitch from the finished champions (basically second best dog and second best bitch) to be awarded as many points as that sex had in the classes plus the number of champion dogs they beat (the ones who walk from the breed ring) of their sex from the printed point schedule. Clear as mud? :)

Select Dog and Select bitch. Only champions of records are eligible. Select dog and bitch earn points towards their grand championships along with Best of Breed & Best of Opposite Sex. Best of Breed gets to count all dogs that showed that day including themselves. Best of Opposite Sex gets to count all dogs of their gender which compete that day including themselves. Select Dog gets to count all males showing that day including themselves minus BOB or BOS that they did not defeat. The same applies for Select Bitch. Yes, even though dogs/bitches who are not champions (including WD & WB even if they finished that day) are not eligible for grand points they are still counted. A grand championship requires 25 points with 3 majors (based on their current AKC point schedule for that breed) and must have at least 3 events with one or more champions defeated. Does that help?

But remember, 80% of the time, they (the judges) pick the person holding the lead instead of the best dog.

I disagree with that statement. I am an owner handler and took my dog to the top. He was a nice dog and was rewarded as such. Yes, it does happen, but not 80% of the time.

it happens that sometimes the person on the end of the lead is a professional handler and very good at what they do getting the dog exactly the way it needs to be for the judge to see the angles they need to see- so I would say I understand your sentiment, but it's not because the judge knows the handler, it's because the handler knows their job.

@@SitStaywithStacySlade We're in the Chicago Region, it's at least 80% of the time.
