- 2 @DirectActionEverywhere activists, @wayne.hsiung and Paul Picklesimer, face up to 11 years in prison for filming inside a Smithfield meat farm and rescuing 2 injured piglets. The trial starts today. #SmithfieldTrial
This trial is a tragic example of how corrupt the legal system in the U.S. is when it comes to the meat industry:
1. The judge ruled against showing, hearing, or even talking about any video footage taken by the defendants on the farm.
2. The judge would not allow the defense to talk about the conditions of the animals or mention animal welfare issues.
3. The judge won’t let the defense mention that the 2 piglets were at a high risk of dying.
4. He also ruled to have an anonymous jury, which could lead jury members to think the defendants are dangerous.
5. The judge tempered the defense’s ability to participate in jury selection by prohibiting them from asking potential jurors about animal welfare, or ties to the meat industry, so they can know which jurors they better excuse.
6. At the last minute, the judge also removed the live-streaming and documentation rights of a journalist who had previously been given permission.
He also denied popular media outlets to collaborate in broadcasting the trial. Allowing only one small news company to film inside the trial and share it with other journalists, if they wish to.
7. Other members of the public will be denied from entering the court, despite the fact that the right to a public trial is protected by the US constitution.
8. On the trial's first day, the judge decided to strike the juror who indicated he knows the jury can declare the defendants not guilty because a law is not constitutional & would generally be favorable towards the defense. The judge said he would feel bad making the prosecution burn “one of their few precious strikes” on him.

Just when we thought we had turned the corner with animal rights, system adopted anti whistleblower laws known as ag gag laws. Here we are.
The jury cant see the footage? Because it was illegally gotten? I'd think the case wouldnt be fair without it. Hope his lawyers loophole the hell out of that to get the jury to see it.
Most of this could be avoided if animals werent considered PROPERTY.
Without seeing the footage how can the jury decide whether their actions were justified and appropriate? Indeed, the footage could be vital evidence in prosecuting those responsible for such suffering and those supposed to protect the animals from such harm.

First of all they allow animals to suffer to death in unbelievable pain, and second of all they make these to lovely people go to prison for 11 years just for rescuing two piglets. I hope the piglets didn't get sent back to the slaughterhouse because than they would have trusted humanity and they would die feeling betrayed. What a horrible world it has become. I am a vegetarian but not vegan and sometimes i feel so disgusting about myself that me consuming dairy product is no different than those eating meat. I don't know what non-vegetarians think or they even think about animals being killed for their taste. Killing animals can be considered ok if there is no other option to eat, but just to satisfy tongue is cruelty.They are butchers in initial stage of becoming cannibals but then i am also not a saint being a vegetarian but enjoying dairy products.
